Replacing a post in a machine/control
definition
Follow these procedures when you have a machine definition/control definition/post and want to replace
the existing post with a new one. Follow these steps when want to replace the post, but continue to use all
of your old control definition settings.
You will need to complete the following tasks:
I. Add the new post to the .control‐5 file used by the current post.
II. Copy the control definition settings from the old post to the new post.
III. Copy the post text from the old post to the new post.
IV. Delete the old control definition.
Each task is described in detail in the following sections.
Adding the post to the .control5 file
1. Copy the new post into the folder where your other posts are stored. For example:
\shared mcamX5\MILL\POSTS.
2. Make a backup copy of the machine definition and control definition files for the original
post!! You will be deleting the original control definition so make sure you create a backup
copy now!!
3. Select Machine Definition Manager from the Settings menu.
4. Open the machine definition for the current post.
5. Click the Edit the control definition button.

6. Click the Post processors button.
7. Click Add files.
8. Select your new post.
9. You should see it listed as shown here:
10. Click OK to return to the Control Definition Manager. This creates a brand new control definition
for the new post, with default settings.

11. Select the new post in the Post processors drop‐down list:
12. After you select it, you should see a + icon next to it:
13. Click the Save button on the toolbar to save your .control‐5 file.
A green check should now appear next to the post name:
Comment: This is where it gets confusing for many people. At this point, your .CONTROL‐5 file actually
contains two control definitions:
 the original control definition for your original post.
 a new control definition for your new post. However, this new control definition is created with
default settings; it does not use the settings from your original control definition.
So, you need to COPY the settings from the original control definition to the new control definition. Then
your new post will work the way you expect it to, and you can delete the control definition for the original
post.

Copying the settings from the original control definition
1. Make sure your new post is still selected in the Post processors list and click on any page in the
Control topics list. NC Output will work fine.
2. Right‐click in any unused gray area of the page and select Import > All pages.
3. Make sure the current .control‐5 file is selected and click OK.
4. Select your original post from the Post Selection list. Make sure the post is selected, not Default
setting for control type.
TIP: If you do not see the post, select the proper product type from the Control type list.

5. Click OK to return to the Control Definition Manager. Mastercam copies the settings from the
original control definition to the control definition for the new post.
6. Save the file before continuing.
Copying the post text from the original control definition
1. Select Text from the Control topics list.
2. Right‐click in an empty cell and choose Import > All sheets > From post.
3. Select your original post and click OK.
4. Select the product control key + the name of the original post. Do not select the DEFAULT key.
5. Click OK. Mastercam imports all the post text entries from the original post/control definition.
6. Save the control definition.

Deleting the old control definition
Now that the control definition for the new post has all of the settings from the old post, you can delete that
one so you do not get confused between the two.
1. Click the Post processors button.
2. Select the old post processor.
3. Click Delete files.
4. Click OK.
5. Save the .control‐5 file.
7. Click OK to close the Control Definition Manager.
8. Mastercam returns you to the Machine Definition Manager.
9. Make sure the Machine Definition Manager displays both the proper control definition file and the
new post:
10. Save the machine definition. Your new post should be loaded with the proper control definition
settings whenever you choose that machine definition.
