Title: Benefits of both organic and inorganic fertilizers on Plants

2

Research Question:

Fertilizer replenishes the soil. As plants grow and mature, they take in a soil's nutrients along
with water. Over time, the nutrients become depleted. As this happens, plants are unable to
produce new foliage. In general, plants take 16 different nutrients from the soil, including
magnesium, nitrogen, potassium, iron and zinc. Certain plants, such as citrus, require higher
amounts of specific elements. In the case of these plants, customized fertilizer formulas are
available. The objective of this research project is to know the benefits of both organic and
inorganic fertilizers on plants
3

Literature Review

Humans require certain nutrients from food. Similarly, plants require specific nutrients in
order to thrive. Unlike humans, plants cannot simply take a daily vitamin, but instead depend on
their caretakers to provide the necessary nutrients for survival. Fertilizers contain the necessary
nutrients for plants to reach their full potential and have a long, healthy life.

Organic fertilizers are made entirely of plant and animal-based components. Examples of
organic fertilizers include compost, bone meal, animal manures and wood ash. Organic fertilizers
naturally contain all of the required nutrients for healthy plants.

Inorganic fertilizers are chemical combinations of various nutrients that the plants
require.
Inorganic fertilizers are typically mixed with water and absorbed instantly into a plant's root
system.

When plants are growing, they need some necessary nutrients for proper growth. Adding
fertilizers can ensure the plants receive the nutrients they need at planting time and during the
growing period. It will not only ensure the plant receives the proper amount of nutrients, but
ensures their lush growth. Fertilizers can have different benefits during plants different growing
period.

1. Boosting Growth. Fertilizers can encourage the rapid growth of plants. Nitrogen is considered
as a growth booster and a greening agent. So fertilizers which have rich nitrogen are particularly
useful for plant growth.

2. Acceleration of Maturation. The Phosphorus nutrient in fertilizers is mainly responsible for

plant maturity. So planters who want to speed up their plant's maturity should apply phosphorus-
rich fertilizers, as this.

3. Enhance Resistance. Potassium can strengthen the stalks and straws of plants, enabling them
to hold more water and become more resistant to drought conditions. So fertilizers can improve
seed and fruit quality, producing greater produce and better earnings.

4. Conditioning Soil. Proper application of fertilizers can restore the natural chemical
composition of the soil. Overdependence on a single type of fertilizer can alter the natural
4

nutrient balance, resulting in poor soil conditions. Organic fertilizers can help improve the
chemical balance of the soil can be improved by using.

In conclusion fertilizer provides greener, healthier plants. Some fertilizers also contain
anti-fungal and disease components to further benefit the plants. If you follow the instructions
carefully, fertilizers are purely advantageous to any home garden, and the results are generally
evident fairly quickly.

DISCUSSION
Fertilizers are any materials that are used to put into the soil to add or improve the soil’s
fertility. There are two mail types of fertilizers namely organic fertilizers and inorganic
fertilizers. Organic fertilizers are natural fertilizers they are not man- made, they can come from
the farm, for example cow manure, chicken litter and compost. Inorganic fertilizers are man-
made fertilizers; they are not natural, for example urea and NPK.

FIGURE 1 and 2

There are many reasons why farmers use fertilizers. Some of these reasons for using
fertilizers were obtained during this survey. They were: to add nutrients to plants, to make the
soil less compact, make the plants grow faster and to make money faster.
Eight out of fifteen farmers said that the main use of fertilizers is to add nutrients to the
plants; which is 54% of the total. Both organic and inorganic fertilizers help to add nutrients to
plants. Fertilizers contain nutrients which help to boost the plant in many ways. It helps in
vegetative growth, root development and fruit and flower development. For example urea
contains nitrogen which helps in vegetative growth. Many farmers use fertilizers because it helps
in the overall growth and development of their crops.
Two out of fifteen farmers said that fertilizers help to make the soil less compact; which
is 13% of the total. Fertilizers especially organic fertilizers like manure help to loosen the soil.
When the soil becomes too compact, farmers add organic fertilizers to the soil so as to loosen it
and this will intern allow the plant roots to penetrate the soil much easier. With less compact soil
the plants will be able to grow properly since the roots will be able to penetrate deep into the soil
to absorb nutrients and water.
Three out of fifteen farmers sail that fertilizers help the plants to grow faster; which is
20% out of the total. The reason why farmers say that fertilizers make plants grow faster is
because it adds larger quantities of nutrients which can help the plants to grow at a faster rate but
if too much is added it can kill the plants. Another reason could be that there are specific
fertilizers that are responsible for a specific purpose. For example urea helps in the growth of the
plants.
Two out of fifteen farmers said that fertilizers allow them to make money faster or make
a profit. This is so because since they are using fertilizers the plants will grow faster and so they
will be able to sell it faster and so make money at a faster rate. Also since they are using
fertilizers their crops will be of a better quality and so persons will want to buy from them and so
they can make money faster.
Adding nutrients to plants, making the soil less compact, making the plants grow faster
and make money at a faster rate are all reasons why farmers choose to use fertilizers; both
organic and inorganic
11

Figure 3
There are many benefits of using fertilizers. Some of the main reasons of using fertilizers
are: it increase crop yield, it improves the poor quality land, it improves the soil pH and it makes
the crops row faster.
Six out of the fifteen farmers said that the main reason for using fertilizers were to
increase the crop yield. The reason why fertilizers help to increase crop yield is because
fertilizers add lots of nutrients to the plants, since it adds lots of nutrients it can help to increase
the yield of the crops. More nutrients lead to an increase crop yield.
Four out of the fifteen farmers said that the main benefit of using fertilizer were to
improve the poor quality of the land. Sometimes farmers can exhaust the nutrients in the soil and
so the land will be of a poor quality. So to improve the quality of the land farmers add fertilizers
either organic or inorganic. By adding fertilizers and incorporating it into the soil it will be able
to replenish the nutrients in the soil. Fertilizers will be able to improve the poor quality of the
soil.
Three out of fifteen farmers said that the main benefit of using fertilizers is to improve
the pH of the soil. PH means potential hydrogen. It tells how acidic or how alkaline the soil is. If
the ph. of the soil is too low fertilizers are added to improve the soil ph so the plant will be able
to grow properly.
Two out of fifteen farmers said that the main benefit of using fertilizers is to make the
crop grow faster. The reason why farmers say that fertilizers make plants grow faster is because
it adds larger quantities of nutrients which can help the plants to grow at a faster rate but if too
much is added it can kill the plants. Another reason could be that there are specific fertilizers that
are responsible for a specific purpose. For example urea helps in the growth of the plants.
Increasing crop yield, improving poor quality land, improving soil pH and making the
crops grow faster are all the main benefits of using fertilizers; both organic and inorganic.
These are the main reasons for using fertilizers namely: to increase crop yield, to improve
the poor quality land, to improve the soil pH and to make the crops row faster.
12

CONCLUSION
Both organic and inorganic fertilizers benefit the plants in many ways. Fertilizers do help
to increase crop yield, to improve the poor quality land, to improve the soil pH and to make the
crops row faster.
Out of 15 farmers, 6 said that it will increase crop yield, 4 said it will improve the poor
quality land, 3 said it will improve the Ph of the soil and lastly 2 said that it will make the crops
grow faster.
13

RECOMMENDATION
Although fertilizers help plants in many ways, too much of it can cause the plants to die or have
some bad effects on plants. Farmers should be careful when using fertilizers.
