Chapter 3 – Methodology

This chapter presents the methods on how the data from experiment are gathered

and analyzed. It explains also how the Grass Papermaker machine will be fabricated.

Finally, the system design is briefly discussed with the use of diagrams.

3.1 Research Methodology

The authors will be utilizing the inferential method of study requiring

experimentation and fabrication of a machine that will use the dried and freshly-cut leaves

of UE-Caloocan as source of raw materials.

3.2 Design of Grass Papermaking Machine

Shown in Figure 3.1 is the design for the papermaking machine as well as the
important dimensions.

Figure 3.1: Papermaker Machine (Northwest Isometric)

The machine is 36 inches in height, with a width of 20 inches and length of 24
inches. Other dimensions of the frame of the machine is shown in Figure 3.2.

Figure 3.2: Machine Frame

Grass and leaves clippings are placed into the main chamber of the machine to
start the papermaking process. Shown in Figure 3.3 is the pulping chamber.

Figure 3.3: Pulping Chamber

The internal view of the chamber for the leaves and grass clippings is shown in
Figure 3.4. The motor with two sets of blades is also shown in Figure 3.5.

Figure 3.3 Internal View of Pulping Chamber

For the final process of pulping, the mixture is poured onto a container where the
filter is placed to drain the water of the mixture. Shown in Figure 3.5 is the tilting of the
pulping chamber for the transferring of the mixture.

3.3 Project Components

 Pulping Chamber: This is a unit containing water and grass will be poured. This

will be made by using a cooking pot with a hole drilled at the bottom.

 Electric motor: A 1/2-hp motor with 3 sets of blades in order to thoroughly mix the

grass with water and extract the pulp from the grass.

 Filtering Chamber: This is where the blended mixture of grass and water will be

poured into.

 Screen and Mold: The water will be drained through the screen and the pulp of

the grass will stay on the screen, molded and dried into paper products.
