2-Day Matching Event for Child and Family Service of the Philippines

Providing assistance to abused and disadvantaged children, women and families in the
Philippines, the Children and Family Service of the Philippines (CFSPI) is a not-for-profit
organization based in Baguio City. It was founded by Consuelo Zobel Alger, Patti Lyons and
Daniel Urquico in 1987.
It was in 1988 when they started offering drop-in and residential services to street children of
Baguio. At present, for almost 30 years, hundreds of disadvantaged children have availed the
programs of CFSPI. Through its Healing, Caring, and Teaching Framework, more than 700
children were able to manage problems brought about by juvenile delinquency. The organization
was able to bring down the number of children in conflict with the law from (insert number).
The Fairbuilding Network was able to witness these achievements as the team visited the main
office of CFSPI in Baguio City last September 6 and 7. As an accredited NGO partner of the
FairBuilding Network (FBN), a 2-day event was held for CFSPI highlighting their Culinary Arts
Training Center for Youth at Risk and Refurbishment of Juvenile Justice Facility construction
projects.
The forum was attended by FBN’s industry partners namely: Hornitex Philippines, Arctic Forest,
Freight Connections Philippines, Boysen, and Floor Center. On the first day of the 2-day event,
the highlight of the program is the Engagement Forum where Mr. Danny Urquico, Co-Founder
and President of CFSPI shared the mission and vision of their organization. The engagement
forum successfully resulted to pledges of discounts for the products of the construction supplier
attendees.
Hornitex, a supplier of laminated floorboards was represented by Mr. Tyrone Yu and Kyle Vincent
Go who pledged to give a 25% discount for their products plus free installations. Arctic Forest
represented by Mr. Jay Suyu was willing to give discount for their pine wood products. Freight
Connections Philippines, an international freight forwarding company was represented by Mr.
Norman and Mrs. Regie Dela Cruz who guaranteed to give discount for the logistics and
transferring of the construction supplies from Manila to Baguio. They even considered donating a
container van for CFSPI. Boysen, represented by Mr. Joey Chan also pledged to give a
substantial discount for their painting needs. Floor Center, represented by Mr. Joey Tadeo and
Mr. Edgar Literatus were also present – Floor Center have had successful transactions with
CFSPI in the past and were willing to further extend their generosity to the organization.
After the Engagement Forum, CFSPI toured FBN and the industry suppliers to the Culinary Arts
Training Center project. The FBN Team was also given the opportunity to meet the girls of Suello,
those who have survived and surviving the trauma of sexual abuse and violence.
The Survivor Support Program takes a multi-pronged approach to help the girls come to terms
with their experiences, develop their personal goals and become empowered, educated
women. The girls also sang a song for their visitors and toured them around their shelter. Clean
and neat rooms are a manifestation of the discipline that the CFSPI program has imparted to the
children. The programs of CFSPI helps them enhance their access to social and economic
opportunities in the future.
On the second day of the event, FBN and the industry partners also visited Consuelo Life Skills
Center for Children. It offers vocational training for children in conflict with the law (CICL). The
CLSCC is primarily a day center in Beckel that serves as a venue for intervention, diversion and
aftercare services. CFSPI offer TESDA-certified courses like carpentry, welding and masonry.
The youth also attend classes and courses on life skills to prepare them for independent living.
They are being equipped with the necessary skills to succeed in the future.
In conclusion, the event for CFSPI was successful and Fairbuilding is hopeful that all the pledges
from the industry suppliers will turn out to tangible results whose beneficiaries will be hundreds of
children and youth hoping for a better future.
