A TOAST TO
THE BEST
Welcome to our 2019 Best of Design issue! There is no other way we would want to kick off the new year
than by celebrating the incredible design scene here in our beautiful city. From dynamic designers and stunning
showrooms to retail hot spots and a plethora of resources, these pages are filled with all of those that assist in
keeping Atlanta as the Southeast’s epicenter of design. Some of my favorite highlights from this designcentric
issue include “Balancing Act,” which shines a well-deserved spotlight on the handsome faces behind 2 Gays & a
Design; our candid conversation with Vicki Adams Beam of the family-owned Jacqueline Adams Antiques (“Past
Perfect”); and the showstopping abode done up by Pineapple House Interior Design (“Spec-tacular Drama”).
We are also pleased to feature our 2019 Atlanta Faces of Design. Take an inside look at design-industry
leaders—all boasting their own unique style and signature touches.
2018 wrapped with NARI Atlanta’s 26th annual Contractor of the Year Awards Gala (check out snapshots
from the affair in the House Party Atlanta section). Invited guests gathered at W Atlanta - Midtown, which
was outfitted to perfection to mimic that of a
fairy-tale winter wonderland. The evening was
hosted by HGTV personality Chip Wade. We
are proud to feature all the winners within the
pages of this issue.
The beginning of this year has already
kicked off in high gear with January Market at
AmericasMart, where tons of great highlights
included new product introductions, seminars
and panel discussions, networking, and so much
more. ADAC’s Product Launch Showcase did
not disappoint, of course—and there is still
so much to come in the new year: We will be
celebrating Modern Luxury Interiors Atlanta’s
inaugural Real Estate Awards, the magazine’s
fourth anniversary, ASID Design Excellence
Awards, and my husband and I will be
welcoming our first bundle of joy into the world!

I looked around the room. One friend was an artist; another was launching a LaVista Park home

was to be surrounded by these talented, creative people right here in Atlanta (and
how silly I was for not capitalizing on their stories to share with you—stay tuned
for the next issue to see those come to fruition!).
I always say we have the best of both worlds here in Atlanta, and I mean it,
particularly in the design community. We’re a large, vibrant city with cutting-edge
design and a diverse community, but we retain an often “old-fashioned” way of
doing things (can I get an “Amen!” for kindness and hospitality?). It’s a place where
you might have been going to the same rug vendor as your designer mother or
grandmother before you, or where you know the showroom manager’s kids’ names
and ask after them. Or, if you’re me, where you saved scraps of fabric from a trip to
Lewis & Sheron Textiles to outfit your Barbies.
But it’s not all dripping Spanish moss, genteel accents and toile here, as we
all know—the design business is booming, and transitional and contemporary
styles are really starting to push through. Take, for example, the incredible room
Pineapple House Interior Design did for entertainment mogul Will Packer in our
“Best of Design” feature, jewelry designer Kimberly McDonald’s North Buckhead
home, or designer Kate Hayes’ project that is as much a lesson on color theory and
the psychology of color as it is gorgeous.
Please be sure to congratulate our other “Best of Design” category winners
if you see them out and about—and, please, always remember to submit ideas,
people, places, things and trends you see in Atlanta—including your own projects.
Here’s to making 2019 the best design year in Atlanta yet.

a one-stop shop to include fabric and furniture, Fabricut made the wish come true.
And this year, that has translated into a burgeoning section of its business: transitional
pieces, done with eight-way handtied suspension systems. The most appealing part?

Pillow Talk
Atlanta-based creatives Renée Bouchon and Beth Lacefield team up to create
a pillow series that your sitting room is craving. –Presley West

The creative collaboration between Atlanta artist Renée Bouchon and artisan designer Beth
Lacefield was a match made in heaven—and at JDouglas. The duo first crossed paths at the
showroom inside AmericasMart, where their respective products were sold during market, and
realized they shared a mutual admiration for one another’s work—and a desire to collaborate. Says
Bouchon, “[Beth] had the opportunity to see my Relics pieces in person and instantly fell in love
with the detail and depth behind each one, and had a vision for translating them into textiles
and pillows—so the collaboration began!” For Bouchon, translating her Relics series—which
she describes as “a melting pot of inspirations and stories that have landed into a beautiful
little creation”—onto textiles with the help of Lacefield’s fabric expertise expanded her
outlook on her artistry. Born out of months of hands-on experimentation in the
Lacefield offices, the limited-edition finished collection features handpainted
and handembellished pillows and fabrics that are truly works of art. Fabrics

BRIGHT LIGHTS
Jonathan Browning’s latest collection is a can’t-miss modern
take on functional architectural home lighting. –PW

With 14 years of experience in manufacturing bronze, brass and steel, Jonathan

Browning has earned a reputation as an industry staple. And while his latest
architectural lighting collection through Jonathan Browning Studios possesses the
same classic style and unmatched detail for which the interior designer is known,
the new collection is unlike anything that he has released in past. Born out of a
desire to bridge a gap in the lighting industry, Browning’s latest collection employs
bronze, brass, lead crystal and handcrafted porcelain to add a modern, elegant spin
to technical, architectural lighting fixtures both within and outside the home,
ranging from waterproof outdoor lights to path lights and everything in between.
The collection—sold exclusively at R Hughes’ showroom in ADAC—features a
unique take on Hollywood-style vanity lighting. Says Browning, “Beautiful vanity
lights are hard to come by, so we designed one that is both glamorous and
modern.” ADAC, Ste. 320, r-hughes.com; jonathanbrowning.com

NICELY NEUTRAL
As designers and homeowners seek serenity and simplification, the challenge to surfacing brands is to find
richness in grayscale. That goal has been accomplished as Benjamin Moore, Porcelanosa and Hastings
have not only achieved the depth mined from earthy hues, but the luscious luxury as well.

AUCTION FINDS

SOTHEBY’S PHOTOS COURTESY OF SOTHEBY’S HOME

“Boom in Antique Furniture Driven by Environmentally Conscious
Millennials Who Are Rejecting ‘Fast Furniture’,” read a headline from
London’s The Telegraph newspaper. The shocking story went viral on
Instagram among the interior-design community I loyally follow. But it’s
true: Millennials Google everything and, as a result, are savvy shoppers
who know the difference between Ikea and artisan-made. Now,
auction houses are catering to this younger generation. Last year,
Sotheby’s launched sothebyshome.com, a consignment marketplace
that connects collectors and design lovers in an approachable new
platform to buy furniture, art and home decor from showrooms, dealers,
interior designers and private individuals. “At Sotheby’s auction house, the
average age of a client is typically in their 50s or 60s,” says Elizabeth Brown,
CEO of Sotheby’s Home. “For us at Sotheby’s Home, we have noticed anecdotally
that there are a lot of younger consumers purchasing antiques. Last week,
a woman in her early 30s was our [biggest buyer].” –Sarah Bray

MODERN ROSE
After the recent design shows and markets, it’s safe to say
minimalism is on its way out. One of the maximalist trends
we can’t get enough of is the resurgence of English country,
and who better to take it on than leading British wallpaper
brand Cole & Son? Its new collection, Botanical Botanica, was
inspired by “the innate beauty of nature and the magical allure
of its transformation through the year,” says Carley Bean, head
of design, who spearheaded the hand-drawn and handpainted
to-scale designs. “Botanical Botanica is our ode to nature.” Based
on English country garden staples such as sweet pea, bluebell,
thistle, lilac and rose, each of the 15 designs pays homage to one
of the four seasons—incorporating bold motifs such as roses and
large-scale fern fronds, and unexpected color pairings to give the
classic florals a modern edge. To the trade, Lee Jofa, ADAC, Ste.

HIGH ON STYLE
An event planner extraordinaire and his partner work with a Charleston-
based interior designer to create a fabulous Midtown abode.
By Lia Picard // Photography by Willett Photography

When Christopher Confero, event planner and founder of Confero (christopherconfero.com), and his
partner, Gabe Hilliard, moved into Midtown’s Mayfair Tower, they knew they wanted to make it a
place of their own. The one-bedroom, two-bathroom condo is the couple’s first home together, and,
in such an elegant setting, it deserved to be celebrated with decor that perfectly matched their style.
They brought Charleston-based interior designer Matthew Monroe Bees (matthewmonroebees.com)
on board to make their dream a reality. For Bees, it was a balancing act between Confero’s and
Hilliard’s preferred color palettes. “People always assume, because of my events, continued…

laughs Confero. But he wanted a mature, urban
aesthetic, while Hilliard wanted something more
vibrant. “My solution was minimal color in the
public spaces with lots of patterns and small pops
of color woven throughout,” says Bees.
The dining room and living room are a shared
space defined by seagrass rugs and separate furniture
groupings. The dining room table, an English
antique, gives the room a mature vibe Confero was
looking for while also adding weight. It’s juxtaposed
by Philippe Starck ghost chairs. At first glance, it
seems that the floral wallpaper consists of roses, but
it was designed by a friend and has “Easter eggs”
hidden throughout, like Confero’s logo; and apples
paying homage to Confero’s time in New York.
The bedroom, Bees says, is where Hilliard got
his color fix, evoking the feeling of a lodge: “The
deep green really gives the black-and-white fabrics
a little more push that allows them to feel warmer
than they do in the public spaces.” Making
playful nods to both dwellers are a horse motif
and Benjamin Franklin bust. The horse, Bees
says, is Confero’s spirit animal, while Hilliard is
a history buff.
Surprisingly, the sweetest continued…

the keen eye to find, like daisies, symbolic of

LaVista Park residence the perfect backdrop for a
homeowner with an extensive collection of art, who
also happens to have a PhD in psychology.
“It’s a very well-done modern home, but I wanted to give it some life,”
says designer Kate Hayes, who was tasked with transforming the “white box”
construction into a vibrant setting with its own voice. “It was a tricky balance,”
she admits. “We wanted to bring in color, but not be such a departure from the
modernist essence of the house, and not take away from his fabulous art either.”

collection of artwork from Marche
Aux Puces in Paris dots the walls.
So she chose pieces from the likes of Roy Lichtenstein and Alexander Calder. The
result is an engaging, anti-traditional space that mimics the art collection it houses:
carefully curated, but eclectic.
“Like any good art collector, he has very broad taste. He has more traditional
late-1800s pieces from France, but he also loves modern art,” the designer explains.
“I wanted the furnishings to also feel like his collection: a broad range of taste that
is brought together smoothly.” See the living room, where a midcentury-modern
Barcelona couch and Paul Evans Cityscape cocktail table mingle with 1940s French
bergère chairs. Or the entryway, where an exuberant Fornasetti for Cole & Son
wallpaper offsets an antique console. In the dining room, the walls were lacquered
golden yellow using Hollandlac Fine Paints of Europe enamel, providing a striking
background for a vintage George Nelson credenza and Florence Knoll table. “It was
a beast to contend with; they seriously did maybe nine coats,” Hayes says of the
deep-hued wall. “But the client had a more neutral palette of dining furniture, and
it made it feel so much livelier, like he could have a cocktail party at any minute!”

JEWELRY AND HOME DESIGNER KIMBERLY
MCDONALD MAKES A TRIUMPHANT—AND
BEAUTIFULLY DESIGNED—RETURN TO ATLANTA.

By Lauren Finney // Photography by Sarah Dorio

Kimberly McDonald is best known for her jewelry line, which celebrated 10
years of business in 2018, but those in the know might also be familiar with
her home decor. The same natural elements—“I love this juxtaposition of
something rough and something fine,” she says—that are the cornerstones
of her jewelry come into play in her homewares lines. And what better place
to show off her stunning sense of style than her new Atlanta home base.
“I actually lived in Atlanta before and right after college,” says the
North Carolina native who splits time between Los Angeles, New York
City and now her third adopted city. “I was here for seven or eight years.
I loved living here; my godchildren are here. I really missed being on the
East Coast, and it’s nice to have so much space.”
Her entree into home decor started about five years ago. “We found
this guy who works with the space program who helped us preserve crystals
by putting them in Lucite. Irregular shapes like crystals don’t bond with
that material, so he developed this sonic technology to pull it off, and it
amplified the crystals,” she says. From there, it was a rocket launch into
an astounding array of home goods. Paperweights, serving trays, boxes
and bookends eventually led to lighting and, “three years ago, we started
with wallpaper,” says McDonald. “We partner with Phyllis Morris and
Circa Wallcovering in Beverly Hills. And about two years ago, we began
partnering with Marc Phillips out of New York on our beautiful carpets.”
It’s all evidenced right here in McDonald’s renovated Buckhead home,
where her taste and affinity for the natural is front and center from the
moment you walk through the iron doors into her wallpapered entryway.

Agate- and geode-inspired wallpapers—including a

custom single-slab interpretation behind her master bed—
dot the home, but it never feels overwhelming. The living
room and closet are done in Benjamin Moore’s Charcoal
Slate, giving the eye a break while reinforcing the jewel-
box look. It’s all very Los Angeles, which makes sense,
as McDonald has a store and a home there and has been
heavily influenced by the city.
“Part of what I love about living in Los Angeles is
that the spaces are open,” she notes. “I wanted to bring
that feeling here. When we were looking at houses, most
of what I saw seemed chopped up. I like big, open space.”
That meant taking an outdated layout and updating
it to be uniquely hers—which wasn’t without headache.
McDonald quickly discovered that her aesthetic wasn’t
easily achieved here in Atlanta, and it took several turns
with different vendors and contractors to pull off the
renovation, which mostly took place on
the main floor of the home.
“What I found was that a lot of
people, because I was doing different
things, were just ‘yes-ing’ me and didn’t
necessarily know how to do what I
was asking, or weren’t willing to give
professional feedback,” she says. But enter
Custom Quality Flooring’s Stacey Bailey,
with whom McDonald really vibed. “He
went above and beyond,” she says. “One of
the things I’ve learned as a jeweler is that
if someone came to me to make a piece
of jewelry, they could tell me what they
wanted. But, as the expert, I have to give
them the feedback of, ‘I understand what
you want, but, realistically, these are the
things we need to do’; or ‘If you want this,
you can’t have this.’ Stacey was like, ‘I got
you; no one does this kind of floor. It’s a
pain in the neck, but this is how we have
to do it if you want it.’”
For McDonald, that was all she
needed to hear. “He gained so much
respect from me because he was confident

enough to speak up about his expertise, and we were
able to create something unique.” Craftsperson to
craftsperson, the two connected, and the result is a
spectacular two-step multicolor preparation.
While most of the rooms have touch points of
McDonald’s signature relaxed, natural, glam style, it’s
the master suite that really produces an audible gasp.
Taking an unused front room, she converted it into a
shoe closet, complete with a fireplace.
“Most women would agree it’s really difficult to
get dressed when you can’t find everything and you
can’t see everything,” McDonald laughs. “I lived in
New York City for 10 years in a tiny apartment. I
wanted to be able to see everything, rotate things and
not just have them sitting in a box somewhere.” Her
talent for display—important in her merchandising—
is in full force in the shoe closet. “I love shoes, all kinds
of shoes, and I just thought it should be a space where
I can sit back there; we can make a margarita and put
the fire on; and be surrounded in a space with the
things that make you feel good.”
If that wasn’t enough, a serious gut renovation
went down in the master bathroom to make it an

Regency look.
Not everything was brought
in from around the world; there
are several Atlanta touches
throughout, most notably pieces
from 14th Street Antiques &
Modern Home (“I have Ken

laughs.) and Bungalow Classic.
And, tucked away in a corner
are two Eastern-inspired chairs
McDonald actually purchased
from a store on Cheshire Bridge
Road during her first stint in
Atlanta. They’ve since followed
her around the country and
were the catalyst for a lot of
Eastern influences that can be
found throughout the home.
McDona ld has gotten
requests for her interior design
skills to be put to use, and
she’s open to doing more. For
now, she’s focused on running
her business, which, by the
way, counts Michelle Obama,
Cameron Diaz and Melissa
McCarthy as fans—Cookie
Lyon, Ta raji P. Henson’s
character on Empire, even had
her living room decked out in
Kimberly McDonald textiles
and decor. For someone who
is constantly on the move,
it’s important to her to have a
centering, grounding place in
Atlanta. “I design what I think
I’d want if I wasn’t me, if I was a
customer. I think that as beings,
we’re much more affected by the
things we see than we realize—
even things we see peripherally.
Things create an energy that you
carry with you, and I wanted a
space that was beautiful and
had elements of my brand. I
think it’s important to surround
yourself with things you love.
Material things are not the most
important things, but what you
see every day is part of your life
experience.”

DRAMA
This newly built home went from drab to dramatic

Entertaining space was
a must, including an
indoor-outdoor porch
that flows nicely into
the eating area.
From top: The high contrast
neutrals helped Pineapple House
Interior Design win a 2018 Gold
Design Excellence Award for the
space; metallic touches popped
against the home’s dark-hued walls.

C
hic with a touch of drama was the desired
outcome for Heather and Chad Troline when
the hip, young New Yorkers purchased this
brand-new spec house in Buckhead. While
the traditional-style home offered tons of
potential—think an ideal locale easily accessible
to Midtown and Downtown; a modern, open floor plan to
accommodate everyday living and entertaining; and a large, acre-
plus lot—the overall aesthetic was lacking in personality and didn’t
adequately portray the couple’s refined yet adventurous design vibe.
In stepped the talented designers from Pineapple House
Interior Design, enlisted to bring the 5,560-square-foot, five-
bedroom residence more in line with the couple’s tastes, which
include ample spaces for entertaining and plenty of room to
eventually start a family. The result? A formerly blank canvas
that has been transformed into a custom masterpiece evoking
sophisticated yet edgy environs rife with bold, contrasting
colors like midnight black and snow white set against rich, dark
hardwood flooring, along with new lighting, wallpaper, window
treatments, artwork and other upscale finishes to harmonize
with the homeowners’ existing furniture.
Along the way, the American Society of Interior Designers
lauded the home with a 2018 Gold Design Excellence Award

a custom, large-scale black, white and pink art piece created by
Chad’s best friend, local artist Jeremy Brown (along with new
built-in cabinets, wallpaper and mantle); and a mosaic and simple
grass-cloth wallpaper takes the formerly all-white kitchen to a
whole other level.
Among the Trolines’ favorite features when all was said
and done? They both love the large, flowing kitchen and living
room space that’s great for entertaining, while Chad’s most
treasured space is a screened indoor-outdoor porch just off the
kitchen (another perfect spot for charming guests), and Heather
is enamored by the dining room with its ceiling clad in bold,
abstract wallpaper (a huge hit with visitors, she says).
“We take inspiration from our clients and set out to turn it
into something beyond their imaginations,” says Amber Gizzi,
Pineapple House co-owner. “Chad and Heather had previously
lived in Manhattan, and they wanted a well-designed home that
would stand out and impress; they wanted the ‘wow’ factor. Our
team absolutely loved the chance to show off our edgier side and
transform the client’s ideas into one cohesive plan.”

Danish brand BoConcept has been around since the 1950s, but
only recently arrived in Atlanta in the last few years—thanks in part
to the high demand of Danish design as our city embraces more
contemporary styles. At the Buckhead outpost, a team of talented
designers creates pieces like this Vancouver dining table ($2,569)—
shown here with an oak tabletop, which can also be done up in a

bedroom to create a clean, elegant and sophisticated
design,” says Genys. “I like floating sinks and thought that this
look is what would make the basket-weave wall look like
an art piece.” Those sinks, against HanStone’s Aramis tile,
really pop. “To add functionality, I designed storage drawer
cabinets under the vanity counter to create a shelf for towels

CASSANDRA BUCKALEW
Cassandra Buckalew Interiors is driven by visual storytelling and bespoke design. Focusing on both
residential and commercial design, creating designs that are both individual and experiential guides the
process. In residential projects, the focus becomes you. How do you live your daily life? What inspires
you? What are you collecting or reading? Where have you traveled? What are your hobbies? We
concentrate on creating spaces that uniquely reflect you, where you’re going, where you’ve
been, and who you want to become. In commercial projects, we focus on your brand,
your products and your buyer. Who is the demographic we need to design for? Is it a
certain age group, a certain gender, or do we need to cast a wider net to capture a
larger target audience? Creating a project that is memorable, experiential, and tells
your brand’s story, is the guiding principle. Considering both functionality and
aesthetics, from initial research and conceptualizing, to sketches, drawings,
finishes, and construction, we are involved in the entire process. Let’s begin
the journey of envisioning, designing, and building your dream, together.

KAREN FERGUSON, ASID

Whether a sleek bachelor pad or a family-friendly home, Karen Ferguson designs interiors that reflect her
clients’ interests and style. Her exacting eye adds cohesiveness and polish, while retaining the home’s sense of
authenticity. She loves getting to know and working with her clients, exploring ideas, desires and their daily
lifestyle so a space functions while looking beautiful.

Frequently an owner’s art collection will spark design ideas and conversations. Karen’s inspired by
her travels and loves finding one-of-a-kind accessories from artisans and crafts people that will
become a client’s personal treasure.

For a stylish couple in Brookhaven, she created a clean, modern design that brings warmth
and rich texture to the edgier, industrial-loft style architecture. For a downtown high-
rise condominium, her cool palette and sleek lines correspond with the building’s
steel-and-glass aesthetic, with novel light fixtures and streamlined furnishings.

Karen established Harrison Design’s interior design practice in 2000 and manages
a team of designers. Their work is frequently featured in magazines and has
earned numerous awards.

SANDIE MAZZI
“Where some designers survey an empty room and see a blank slate, Sandie Mazzi sees a hidden
narrative. Hers is an all-encompassing vision that takes into account the character of the place, its
environment and the personalities that reside there.

After graduating with a major in Architecture from Columbia University and a degree in Interior
Design from Parsons School for Design, Mazzi earned her Masters in Florence, Italy. It
was there, amongst the rich textiles and architectural landscape that spoke volumes
about the country’s history that she gained an appreciation for how design informs
the environment and the people who engage with it. Her experience working for
prominent firms such as Christopher Maya Inc and Interior Architects in New York
broadened her scope as a designer; offering access to a range of projects and
a varied take on the traditional home. Her designs take cue from the past
while remaining true to the contemporary sensibilities of the client, meshing
function and balance with modest embellishments. Mazzi also owns Mazzi

home accessories.”

Sherwin-Williams’ 2019 color of the year is Cavern Clay (SW 7701), a warm terra cotta that evokes the smooth sand of the Southwest while
also traveling back to the ’70s—in a good way. “We believe 2019 will be a renaissance of the 1970s, but with a twist,” says Sue Wadden, director
of color marketing for the lauded paint brand. Stumped on what to pair it with? Sherwin-Williams offers up several key color combination
suggestions in shades of blue, green and greige to help offset the strength of such a natural color. Pair it with Southwestern accents to go for broke,
or make it modern against crisp white. Any way you paint it, it’s sure to be striking. Multiple locations, sherwin-williams.com –Annie Cohen

Mother-daughter duo Angela

use their organizing skills to

There’s nothing like packing for a big move

to make you realize the importance of being
organized. “Our business idea stemmed
from our own personal experiences while
moving homes and dealing with downsizing
years of life’s collectibles. We wanted to
share the satisfaction we received when

of Georgia graduate. “I have always been
fascinated with the details of spatial design.”
Through Methodical Muses, the two
are able to share their passion for elevated,
photo shoot-ready interiors that prioritize
both aesthetic and function. “For us, the
organization process comes very natural and
is a canvas for our creativity. There’s nothing
more rewarding than the ‘before and after,’”
Marseille says. That creative vision is evident
in their eye-catching, Instagram-worthy
projects, from color-coordinated medicine
cabinets to fridges stocked with a rainbow
of fresh fruits and veggies. But the duo
admits that bookshelves and shoe shelves
are their sweet spot. “We love styling and
color-coding books; it’s basically a hobby
of ours at this point,” Marseille says with a
laugh. “As for the shoes—let’s just say our
ultimate client would be Carrie Bradshaw.”
For the fashionable women, a strong
sense of personal style and admiration
for icons like Coco Chanel and Karl
Lagerfeld certainly influence every
vignette they tackle. Says Marseille,
“Whether it’s coveralls or couture, I
love to put my personal spin on it. I
treat our projects the same way.” $150

DRESSED: Colour in
(e)motion
The Tabernacle Atlanta
September 20, 2018
What does color mean to us? Certainly, they each have
their connotations, but how heavily do we tie them to
certain emotions or actions? Is green symbolic of verdant
growth, or is it jealousy? Is red passionate anger, or is it
passionate love? Or can those symbols be morphed
outside of traditional expectation?

Our design teams explored this precise theme in IIDA’s

2018 Fashion show, called Dressed: colour in
(e)motion. Each team was assigned a color, a verb, and an
emotion to inspire their garments, which are made almost
exclusively of interior building materials.  The outcome of
their months of work yielded beautiful and thought
provoking results, ranging from a sultry flamenco
influenced garment in red to a peppy blue goddess who
slayed the crowd.
