PRELIMINARY STATEMENT

The following information are furni shed for the only purpose
to assist in the selection, in the order and installation of
the sewage treatment plants BIOEPURO, that are designed and
manufactured by firm I.S.I.R. S.p.A.

The information supplied here are referred to the BIOEPURO P&I


as shown on the I.S.I.R. drawing No.2600/ , here enclosed and
to the cons truct ion drawings suppl ied by I. S. I . R. in connec-
tion with each one of the sewage treatment plant models.

1) SELECTION

The model and therefore the potentiality of the BIOEPURO plant


to be employed is to be deal with I.S.I.R. in consideration of
the following elements:
- number of persons to be served
- vessel's type
- vessel's service
- sewage collection system (by gravity or by vacuum)
- presence of grey waters to be directed to the final stage
for being discharged overboard
- presence of grey waters mixed in the incoming sewage

Further elements to be discussed at the time of the order are


the following:
- required overboard discharged pump(s) head
electrical feeding voltage
requirement of remote alarm
requirement of remote stop
pre-installation of a reserve discharge pump
pre-installation of a reserve blower
eventual changes in compare to the standard positioning of
various components and equipments, connections and accesses
for maintenance and inspection
prefitting on treatment plant tank of vacuum ejectors and/or
pump

2) POSITIONING ON BOARD

2.1- The actual dimensions and the weight of the plant shall
correspond to the drawings enclosed to the order confir-
mation or, designed upon the Client request, after ha-
ving pla~ed the order.

2.2- The plant positioning is to be made in such a way that,


in conditions of normal trimming, the same would result
horizontal (maximum allowed tolerance is 1%).

2.3- The preferred positionin is "alongship"; namely with the


longest side of the plant, parallel to the keel.

2.4- The installation is to be made in such a way that the


electrical motor(s) can not be submerged by a bilge
high level.

2.5- The ac.cess to the observation portholes and to the


inspection man holes is to be assured.

2.6- The electrical panel opening must be rendered possible


for at least 90 degr.

2.7- The disassembly of the components and accessories must


be rendered possible without additional access disas-
semblies.

2.8- The plant foundation is fabricated with a profile and it


has been dimensioned for a distributed load on the
entire support surface.

2.9- The foundation is provided for bolts fastening, but it


can also be welded to the support counter base.

2.10-Eventual supports for the electrical and hydraulic


connections for the plant may be welded to the
structural reinforcement profiles. In this case the
welder must pay attention to avoid heating of the
casesing platings.

2.11-The welding directly on the plant casing platings causes


damages to the internal protectice coatings and the
manufacturer is not liable for what it concerns the coa-
tings guarantee.

3) HYDRAULIC CONNECTIONS

3.1) Feeding of sewage by gravity (black or gray water)

3.1.1 Provide at all the time a feeding cut-off valve with


relevant by-pass to allow maintenance at any operating-
condition .

3.1.2 Provide always a siphon (water trap) of at least 500 mm.


on the sewage inlet lines (Black Water and Gray Water);
this is a must since in the plant there 1S a backpressu-
re that could cause back-flow to the users.

3.2) Sewage inlet when pumped from a collecting tank

3.2.1 The inlet pumping cycle operation, preferably should be


controlled by a timer-two or more times each hour,
subject to the presence of sewage in the tank.

3.2.2 Each inlet (feeding) pumping cycle is not to have a vo-


lume major of 1/20 of the daily flow rate of the sewage
treatment plant.

3.2.3 An electrical inter-block has to shut-down the sewage


pumping to the treatment plant should this be at a high
level condition or without electrical feeding (at this
purpose in the plant electrical panel a switching con-
tactor is provided).

3.2.4 It must be possible to shut-off and by-pass the sewage
inlet. This to allow the plant maintenance in any opera-
ting condition.

3.2.5 Permanent connections with pressurized water lines are


to be avoided; to wash the sewage lines, the collection
tanks or the sewage treatment plants the portable pres-
sure lines with hoses are to be preferred and are to be
used only when necessary.

3.2.6 Should the sewage be collected with a vacuum system, a


device is to be provided for the dilution water; this
can be operated by sea or fresh water.

3.4) Effluent and residual sludges discharge

3.4.1 Since the same pipe-line is used for the discharge of


the treated effluent (in condition of normal operation
of the plant) and of the residual sludges (to be di-
scharged about every 2 or 3 months) and noted that these
lasts may contain solid materials of consistent volume,
the discharge line is to be ample sized (max 1,5 mt/sec)
and with elbows of radius not inferior to three times of
... their diameter .

3.4.2 For the same reason all shut-off and all check valves
must be of the type at full opening, namely: gate val-
ves, sluice valves, ball valves, swing check valves.
Butterfly valves are to be avoided, same for the disc
check valves and the flap valves of sandwich/wafer type.

3.4.3 Should the treatment plant be installed at a level lower


in compare to the sea water line and if the same is
discharging by means of a bull valve, taking into ac-
count tightness, it is to be preferred the goose neck
pipeline system with an air vent syphonage avoiding on
its higher point; this is to coincide with a level of
above one meter in compare to the maximum sea floating
line.

3.4.4 Should the treatment plant be installed at a, level hi-


gher in compare to the sea water line or of the tank to
which the treatment plant has to discharge, the dischar-
ge pump pipeline must, on its first leg, go up at a le-
vel above to the top of the treatment plant in such a
way to avoid that the final tank may be subjected to
empty itself by gravity. Also in such a case the highest
point must be the syphonage avoiding air vent.

3.5} Air vent

3.5.1 The air vent from the treatment plant may propagate foul
odors and therefore it is to be brought to discharge in
such a location to minimize the bad effects and to avoid
possible recirculation to air intakes .

3.5.2 The air vent pipeline, iri'-relation to its length and to
its number of bends, is to be sized in order to be sub-
jected to load losses not above about 1 KPa.

3.5.3 The run must be vertical or sub-vertical with a slope of


at least a 20% towards the treatment plant.

3.5.4 Lower points (pockets) have to be avoided not to incurr


into condensation collectio. It is to be kept In mind
that the air vented is normally carrying an high amount
;"''9 of humiduty. This may cause consistent fluctuations of
the counter pressure to the treatment plant which are
extremely dangerous to its good operation.

3.5.5 Should a low point be unavoidable, it must be positively


drained by a 50 mm (minimum) diameter with a 20% slope
or more (in the case that this drain is discharging into
an open area it has to be furnished with a syphon of at
least 500 mm to avoid breathing of foul odors air).

3.5.6 The defluxion of the air at the outlet of the pipeline


may be protected with a 90/180 degr. bend but has not to
be impeded by meshes or by nearby walls.

3.6} Emergency overflow

3.6.1 Since the metallic casing of the treatment plant is


sized for an hydrostatic column of 2,5 meters maximum,
above its top, it has to be protected from possible
over-pressure. This is realized by installing an emer-
gency overflow.

3.6.2 To avoid that the overflow may breaths air, it shall


have to be furnished by a syphon with an 800 mm about
head and fitted with the facility for the water filling.

3.6.3 The overflow must have an area at least 25% larger of


that of the sewage inlet line, in case the sewage is
pumped, or have an area equal to that of the sewage in-
let when this last is flowing by gravity.

3.6.4 The overflow pipe is ti be connected to the proper atta-


chement, if pre-arranged, on the top of the treatment
plant or it may be connected to the air vent immediately
nearby to its outlet from.the tratment plant and at a
level lower than the air~~lower outlet. This to avoid a
possibility to contaminate with water the blower.

3.6.5 The connection fitting of the overflow to the air vent


has to have a slope towards the same air vent in such a
way to avoid possible condensate leakages to the over-
flow discharge.

3.6.6 The overflow may be discharged in an overflow tank, that


has to be furnished with a high level alarm or it may be
directed to the bilge (this last alternative is not re-
commended for hygienical reasons).
