Universal Design for Learning (UDL): PowerPoint is a universal design for learning that acts as a
framework for design in learning experiences. PowerPoint address grade level standards in ways
that enable all students to gain knowledge, skills, and enthusiasm for learning.
Engagement:
This PowerPoint is displayed on an LCD project and screen, presenting information to students by
also incorporating a two way conversation. This slide show on classifying animals uses voiceover to
ask questions, embedding students in the lesson. Also, this tool enables students’ instant
response(s), and it is a great ice breaker for valuable insight while also gauging the time frame of
the questions and responses. This question and answer PowerPoint is fun and engaging for the
young students, which is great for those who have attention deficiencies. All of the students get to be
loud and answer what hey think the animals are when asked by the voiceover in the slide show.
Representation:
This lesson is focused and straight forward, clearly and simply defining objectives. The slides
are forthright and simple, with questions that relate to the main standard. The student’s learning
happens by discussing the main question listed on the power point slides. The words are minimum
and simple on the slide and relay the key points. Likewise, there are pictures provided for those who
speak a native language in order for those students to relate words with images.
Action and Expression:
This presentation is interactive throughout with questions and answers. This responsive technologi-
cal tool engages the students at every point during the presentation with open ended questions that
allow the Kindergarteners to contribute their personal knowledge and opinions. The PowerPoint
presents pictures of common animals, and the students are excited to express their interest and
opinions their opinions.

Lesson Idea Implementation: This PowerPoint displayed on the LCD project and screen will be
used to introduce a study on classifying animals. The teacher will use a number of questions to dis-
cuss with students which animals they see on the PowerPoint slides. After reviewing the slides, the
students will be divided into four groups of four or five students, and they will decide as a group on
one animal to draw and name that is represented on the PowerPoint slides. They will select an ani-
mal of their choice and create a mini e-book on this animal. As a group, they will become an expert
on this one specific animal. They will be able to share this information with the rest of the class using
the e-book format.

Reflective Practice:  The teacher may also post the PowerPoint lesson, along with these e-books
onto the classroom blog, taking this activity to a LoTi 5 (published). Parents will be able to inter-
act and view their child’s hands on work during the classroom day. Additionally, the e-books may
be displayed for the Kindergarten art show and showcased at PTA meetings to further parent and
faculty involvement.
