This unit will be a continuation of the grade nine (Senior 1) basketball program.
This unit will increase their knowledge of basic rules of basketball.
This unit will increase their ability to dribble in an invasion/territory game-based
environment.
This unit will increase their ability to pass and receive a basketball as required in a
basketball setting.
This unit will increase their ability to shoot a basketball as required in a basketball
setting.
This unit will increase their knowledge of proper defensive techniques in a basketball
setting.
Upon conclusion of this unit, students will possess the knowledge and skills to participate
in a formal game of basketball.
RATIONALE/DESCRIPTION:
This unit is included in the grade 10 physical education curriculums and is important to
implement because it promotes social and physical literacy through team-based cooperation. This
unit will build upon the basic skills and strategies acquired in the grade nine program. Basketball
combines cardiovascular exercise with object manipulation skills and teaches on-and-off-ball
principles, which are used frequently in other territorial/invasion games.
FORMAT:
This unit will be broken down into 5 lessons, each building upon the skills of the one
before it to help students deepen their understanding of the skills required. Each lesson, students
will start with a warm up fitness activity or game, which will be followed by a warm up
dribbling activity. After the warm up, the students will participate in skill building activities,
followed by gameplay, which may be modified or formal.
LESSON OUTLINES:
LESSON 1: Dribbling
- In this lesson, the students will learn the proper dribbling technique, and will practice
various types of dribbles/moves.
Essential Question(s):
- What is the proper technique when dribbling a basketball?
- How can we use the proper safety techniques when dribbling a basketball?
SLOs:
K.3.S2.A.1
- Review safety rules, routines, and procedures prior to participating in each physical activity (e.g.,
allow space for full backswing and follow-through in golf…)
Lesson content:
- The warm-up will consist of a game of bean bag tag
- For the activating activity, students will form a horizontal line and will practice taps and wraps
- Dribbling on the spot (examine technique – do they dribble with their palm?)
- Introduction to dribbling:
o Students will practice dribbling across the gym at different speeds
- Switching hands relay lines:
o Students will form 5 lines across from each other at opposite ends of the gym and travel the
length of the gym while dribbling, switching hands after half way
- Grid knockout:
o Students try to protect the ball from their partner, who is trying to steal it
- Group knockout:
o Students will attempt to steal other players basketballs away from them, while maintaining
possession of their own
- Dribbling relay:
o Relay race between 5-6 groups
Assessment Strategies for Lesson 1:
- Assessment for learning:
o Class discussion prior to start of activities
o Dribbling warm up – observation by teacher
- Assessment as learning:
o Peer assessment during dribbling group drills
- Assessment of learning:
o Self assessment by students at conclusion of class
LESSON 2: Passing
- In this lesson, the students will learn the proper passing techniques, and will practice
various types of passes.
Essential Question(s):
- Can you demonstrate the proper passing techniques?
- What are the 3 types of passes used in basketball?
SLOs:
S.1.S2.A.2
- Select and refine manipulation skills (e.g., serve, forehand stroke, dribble, receive a pass…),
applying mechanical bioprinciples (i.e., force, motion, balance) related to activity-specific
physical activity skills
Lesson content:
- The warm-up will consist of a game of ultimate, with a dodgeball (accesses prior knowledge of
passing)
- For the activating activity, students will form a horizontal line and will practice taps and wraps
- Dribbling on the spot (examine technique – do they dribble with their palm?)
- 2-line Partner Passing:
o Students will practice passing different types of passes to partner
- Star Passing:
o 5 students form the shape of a star and will use different passing techniques at various speeds
- Basketball tag:
o Teammates pass a basketball around in the hopes of tagging an opponent with the ball
LESSON 3: Shooting
- In this lesson, the students will learn proper shooting form, and will practice various
shooting from various spots on the court.
Essential Question(s):
- Can you demonstrate the proper shooting techniques discussed?
SLOs:
S.1.S2.A.2
- Select and refine manipulation skills (e.g., serve, forehand stroke, dribble, receive a pass…),
applying mechanical bioprinciples (i.e., force, motion, balance) related to activity-specific
physical activity skills
Lesson content:
- The warm-up will consist of an “in/out” fitness activity
- For the activating activity, students will form a horizontal line and will practice taps and wraps
- Second part of the activator will include students selecting a basket and making as many shots as they
can within a minute
- Introduction to shooting:
o Students will pick a partner and practice their shooting technique to their partner
o Pairs will move to a net and start shooting
- Switching spots:
o Students will move around on the court to practice shooting from different spots
- 7-Up:
o A shooting team where students start from the elbows of the key and attempt to cancel out the
other team’s shots
- Team 21:
o Modified game of 21, which encourages students to run and grab their shot whether they miss
of sink it
Assessment Strategies for Lesson 3:
- Assessment for learning:
o Activating shooting activity
- Assessment as learning:
o Peer assessment during partner shooting activity
- Assessment of learning:
o Team assessment for modified games, presented to teacher at the end of class
LESSON 4: Defense
- In this lesson, the students will learn proper defensive form, and will practice guarding an
opponent in a 1-on-1 setting.
Essential Question(s):
- Can you demonstrate the proper defensive technique when guarding an offensive player?
- Can you identify what is and is not a foul?
SLOs:

- Demonstrate an understanding of rules (i.e., safety rules, game rules, etiquette, officiating signals)
associated with selected sports while participating and/or officiating
Lesson content:
- For the activating activity, students will perform a dynamic warm-up, which will consist of some
defensive techniques, such as the shuffle
- Defensive stance and shuffle:
o For the acquiring activity, students will form 3 horizontal lines with the teacher at the front,
and will learn proper defensive stance, shuffle, and close out technique
- Mirror game:
o Students will pair up, with one student being the offensive player and the other acting as the
mirror – with the job of mirroring the movement of their partner
o Modifications include adding a ball and increasing the space
- Formal games:
o 4 teams of 4/5, playing for 3-4 mins per game
Assessment Strategies for Lesson 4:
- Assessment for learning:
o Shuffling technique in dynamic warm up
