Section B: I.V. Medication / Blood Transfusion Calculations

1. Omeprazole (Losec) 40 mg is prescribed to be administered over 30 minutes. After


dilution of the Omeprazole to 100 ml with sodium chloride 0.9%, calculate the drip
factor for this medication order using a set which delivers 15drops/ml.

2. The nurse is to administer Metronidazole (Flagyl) 500 mg /100 ml Intravenous infusion


over the next 60 minutes. The tubing has a drop factor of 20. How many drops per
minute are required to start the flow off at the correct rate?

3. Hydrocortisone 250 mg is prescribed to be administered over 60 minutes. Following the


concentration of 1 mg/ml, the Hydrocortisone 250 mg solution was added to 250 ml of
5% dextrose in water. Calculate the drip factor for this medication order using a set
which delivers 20 drops/ml.

4. A unit of blood is prescribed to run over 4 hours; The giving set has a drop factor of 20
gtt /ml. What is the drip rate (drops /min)? (pack contains 400 ml)
