Bob Brenly, the featured speaker at this year’s banquet, is a former catcher
and manager in Major League Baseball. The burly right-hander was signed
by the San Francisco Giants as a third baseman out of Ohio University (where
he tied Mike Schmidt’s single-season HR record), then switched to catcher
in 1979, his fourth pro season. He played for the Cedar Rapids Giants in
1977, hitting .271 with 22 HR and 73 RBI in 136 games. Brenly won the
Giants’ starting catching job in 1984, hitting .291 with 20 HR and 80 RBI.
In Game Four of the 1987 NLCS he homered off the Cardinals’ Danny Cox.
After several seasons in the broadcast booth, Brenly was hired to replace Buck Showalter
as manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks in October 2000, winning a World Series with the
Diamondbacks in 2001. He is currently the color commentator for Chicago Cubs baseball
on WGN and Comcast SportsNet. His son, Michael, is a catcher in the Cubs organization
and played with Peoria in the MWL during the 2009 season.
Jeff Mathis was signed by the LA Angels in the first round (33rd overall
pick) of the 2001 Free Agent Draft out of Marianna (FL) High School and
played for the Cedar Rapids Kernels in 2002. That season, he hit .287 in
128 games with 10 HR and 73 RBI, but missed the MWL playoffs due to
a broken cheekbone. He made his MLB debut on April 5, 2006 against
Seattle as the lone rookie on the Angels’ roster. Prior to the 2010 season,
he had played in 266 MLB games, with a career .200 average, 20 HR and
99 RBI. He set the Cedar Rapids club record with 41 doubles in 2002 and
was named to the MWL All-Star Team. Jeff was recruited by Florida State to play football
and still resides in his hometown of Marianna, FL.
