Using the IDF curve for Return Period = 20 yrs and rainfall duration (Tc = 78 min), we get Rainfall intensity,
i = 98 mm/hr
= 30 m3/s
Using IDF curve, For 1.5 hrs (90 minutes) of rainfall duration in 20 years, Rainfall intensity of 90 mm/hr
then, Qpeak = 0.0028CiA = 0.0028 (0.55) (90) 200
We know that, the maximum discharge for the rational formula will occur when rainfall duration equals
time of concentration. If the drainage system is designed for 1.5 hrs (90 minutes) then the peak runoff is
reduced to 28 m3/s, which is less than the peak runoff value of 30 m3/s for T = 20 years. In this condition,
the drainage system is considered to be under designed and the risk will be higher to flooding
Similarly, for 30 min, Qpeak= 49 m3/s, which is higher than the the peak runoff value of 30 m3/s for T = 20
years. In this condition, the drainage system is considered to be over designed and it is expensive. The
right design should be when Tc= D.
