Major Related Courses & Relevant Coursework
Rural Community Development
This course introduced me to some prominent ideologies in the field of Rural Community Development.
I got the opportunity to interact with some major scholars in the field and learn about the various studies
involved with rural spaces. I was required to complete a twenty-hour practicum with a business in the
rural community. I then presented my experience in a PowerPoint presentation to the class. We also
completed a research paper on the definition of the word “rural” and the meaning that it carries in
different environments.
Professional Communication Methods
This course focused on public speaking, interpersonal communication, and small group communication.
During the course, I listened to and wrote reflections on three guest speakers that are professionals in the
workforce. I picked my own working professional and conducted an interview with them about how
they became who they are today. I also completed a group project plus a research paper with a small
group on Health and Wellness in Rural Georgia. Lastly, I learned as much as I could on how to create
the best resume, cover letter, and be as prepared as possible for job interviews.
Professional Writing
This course introduced me to a multitude of professional documents, making me look at my audience,
purpose, and appropriate style needed for these documents in the workplace. I was required to keep a
professionalism log through the course where I had to reflect on my quality of professionalism. I wrote
professional emails, letters, and a memo. In order to prepare me for the workplace, I had to put together
a workplace portfolio. This entailed me locating an ad for a job or internship in my field, preparing a
cover letter, resume, and plain text resume, and creating a professional webpage.
Psychology in the Rural Community
This course covered some major topics in community psychology including: community research
methodology, intervention programs for community health and well being, diversity, barriers to service
providers in rural areas, and the strengths and challenges rural communities face. I completed a
community service involvement project with the Tifton-Tift County Child Abuse Council and presented
my learning experience with the class, followed by a community service involvement experience paper.
We were also required to have a diversity experience by attending an event we would not normally go
to. My options ranged from a cultural event, political meeting, religious or historical place, that had to
expose me to beliefs or experiences different from my own.
Proposal and Grant Writing
This was a workplace-writing course mainly focused on proposals, grants, and reports for a variety of
organizations. I completed a research-based grant proposal based off my research on what Tifton-Tift

County is lacking. I found a letter from Judge Herbert Benson addressing this city’s drug problem and
how serious it is. I gathered his contact information to talk to him more about his plans and used his idea
of creating a Recovery Community Organization (RCO) for drug addicts and their families, as my grant
proposal topic for the semester.
