Lesson Type 1 The teacher presents information about an item of language:
meaning, form, pronunciation. The students do controlled oral practice of the item (a drill). The students do a written exercise to practise the item. The students are given the opportunity to use the item, along with other language they know, in a communicative activity. Lesson Type 2 The students do a speaking activity requiring the use of a specific language point. The teacher listens in discreetly and makes a note of any difficulties students have with the language point. The teacher uses the sentences (s)he has noted down to focus on and clarify difficulties with the language point. The students do a written exercise to practise the language point. The students do a similar activity to the first one. The students how have better resources to deal with some of the problems they may have faced. Lesson Type 3 The teacher introduces the target language in the form of a listening or reading. Students work on their receptive skills before analyzing the target language. Using a marker sentence from the reading or listening, the students answer a series of questions that will help them discover the meaning/use and form of the target structure. The students do controlled oral practice of the item (a drill). The students complete a series of exercises to practise the target language. The students are given the opportunity to use the item, along with other language they know, in a communicative activity, often related to the original (con)text.
