Last Friday I shared with you
my Vintage Inspired Pendant
Necklaces for the Pass It On
Project. I sent my gift off last

incredibly talented ladies!
I love getting mail. Not bills
or junk mail, but lovely let-
ters from friends and fam-
ily. I think my grandmother
got me hooked. We used to
write back and forth often,
telling each other about our
monthly adventures. Writ-
ing letters is actually a lost
art these days.
So I’m bringing it back “old
school”! I printed them out
on card stock and trimmed
along the edges (I created a
thin stroke around so it was
easy to know where to cut!).
I also found some envelopes
at Target that were a perfect
fit for these 3.5 x 5 inch cards.

The advent of modern pho-
tography began with the first
permanent photograph cre-
ated by Joseph Nicéphore
Niépce in 1826. His allowed
the average person to begin
to incorporate photographs
into their scrapbooks.

However, books or albums
made specifically for show-
casing photographs alone
were not popularized in the
United States until clos-
er to 1860. Before that
point, photographs were not
thought of as items to be re-
produced and shared.
Demand for photo albums
was spurred on in large part
by the growing popularity of
the carte de visite, a small
photograph distributed in
the same manner one might
a visiting card.

I love old classroom prints and posters! They are a checklist of past interests and lifestyles
and I’m happy to give them a space on my walls. I seek out French and British prints as
well as mid-century advertising and can recommend adding vintage artwork to a room for
a unique vintage focal point. Below are a few of my current favourites...

Spring Cleaning?
This 1950’s French house-
wife stars on one side of an
original classroom poster.
The reverse shows the hap-
py return of her husband to a
sparkling kitchen and happy
children. Just like my house...
These prints are fabulous
for adding a quirky vintage
theme to your wall. They
were used in French class-
rooms throughout the 1950’s
and 60’s as talking points
for the children. Unlike their
British counterparts, these
show a much more realistic
view of life - from cleaning
to car crashes. Yes. Really!
In the shop you can find
quite a few of these dou-
ble-sided posters, along-
side, (my favourites), 1950’s
prints by Helene Poirie.
These too were used in class-
rooms but are more decora-
tive in style and often use
a limited palette of colour.
In the UK, the 1930’s saw
the production of a series of
prints that idealised child-
hood and the natural world.
A theme that Eileen Soper
continued with her illustra-
tions for the Nature Series,
created for classrooms by
Enid Blyton in the 1950’s
and 60’s. These prints also
add a unique style to a
room with their bright co-
lours and nostalgic imagary.
There’s such a variety of sub-
ject matter in these vintage
classroom prints that you
can find one for any room in
the house. Frame one up and
brighten up a wall this spring!
Today I’m doing a quick blog
about how to adapt crazy
patchwork for a lampshade.
Trial and error has taught
me that when light shines
through your crazy creation
every small imperfection is
backlit and on display for
all to see, so some small
modifications are required!
Take advantage of my failed
attempts and use these
tips to avoid the pitfalls.
These instructions all re-
late to the lampshade kits
that are on the website - if
you have a different version,
or you are covering an old
shade then you’ll need to
cherry-pick the bits of ad-
vice that are useful for you.
Your lampshade kit has a
rolled up, self adhesive pan-
el inside it. Lay this out on
a piece of pale backing fab-
ric and cut your fabric to the
size, allowing an extra centi-
metre of fabric at each short
side. Now look at the back
of the panel, you’ll see that
the long edges have snap
off pieces at about 1 cm in
