1.1 INTRODUCTION
The laboratory determination of Job Mix for Wet Mix Macadam (WMM) base course was carried
out to meet the IRC, Specification for road and bridge works, MoRT&H.
The aggregates used in the Mix design of wet mix macadam are obtained from the materials
supplied by the contractors at HMP location at Km 639.900 on R-K-P road. The consistency o
aggregates has been observed at the site through sieve analysis. However the required specification
are as follows :-
Individual sieve analysis has been carried out for three different types of aggregates and
averaged to get the suitable theoretical blending of aggregates to suit the grading of MoRT&H table
400-11. After extensive analysis of aggregates, the following proportion has been adopted :-
Type of Material - 40 MM

1.4 PROPERTIES OF MIX AT OMC, PERMISSIBLE VARIATIONS FROM JOB MIX FORMULA
After adopting the blend laboratory trial mixes were carried out to suit the requirement of IRC
406.3.3 Four samples of each of water content ranging from 4% to 10% were prepared by compacting
the moulds with 56 blows. The protector properties are summarized as under :-
Trial No 1 2 3
Weight of Soil + Mould 11286.620 11443.890 11551.840
Weight of Soil 4846.624 5003.892 5111.844

Weight of container 16.00 16.00 16.00
Weight of dry soil 18.37 16.60 17.72
Water content in %age 4.19% 6.02% 6.50%
Dry density in gm/cc 2.190 2.222 2.260
The maximum dry density and optimum moisture content are taken from the above table and
Fig 02. The values are as under :-
A single definite percentage passing for each sieve from combined grading was applied with
allowable as per MoRT&H table 500-13 and calculated the permissible variation for the individua
percentage of gradients. This calculated envelope would be applied for testing of WMM gradation in
routine laboratory testing.
Recommendation :- The Job Mix Formula for WMM base course as prepared above i
recommended for approval.
