Around The World
We all love watching tv shows, it’s a way to escape reality and relax as you enjoy a good

story right in the comfort of your home. Today, I have decided to visit the cities of some of my

favorite tv shows being Breaking Bad, Daredevil, and Arrow. The cities I will be visiting on my

journey include Albuquerque, NM for Breaking Bad, Hell’s Kitchen, NY for Daredevil, and

finally since Starling City was based off of the real-life city of Seattle, WA this will be the final

place I’ll be visiting.

I want to visit these cities in the shortest distance possible. In order to calculate this we

will be using the Spherical Law of Cosines. To use the Spherical Law of Cosines we will need to

use the angle measures from the longitude and latitude values. Below shows a table that has all

the longitude and latitude values needed for my journey.

Table 1

Haque 2

The table above shows the latitude and longitude directions of home and of the three

destinations. These values are used to find angle measures to calculate the distance using the

Spherical Law of Cosines.

To begin my trip I will go from Warren, MI (Home) to Hell’s Kitchen, NY (Destination

1). Hell’s Kitchen in the show is depicted as a dark and brutal place to live in where the crime

rate is through the roof. In real life however, it’s known for its luxury high rises and its

exceptional restaurants. In the show, Daredevil runs around at night stopping crime while trying

to juggle around his life as a lawyer during the day. The coordinates for Warren, MI are 42° 31’

N and 83° 1’ W and the coordinates for Hell’s Kitchen, NY are 40° 46’ N and 73° 59’.

The figure above shows where Warren, Michigan is in reference to the North

Pole. The latitude of Warren is 42° 31’ N, which means that it is 42° 31’ above the equator. The

North Pole is perpendicular to the equator, which means that it forms a 90° with the equator. The

latitude of Warren is subtracted from 90°, in order to calculate the angle between the North Pole

and Warren Michigan, which is 47.4833°.

Figure 4. Angle Between Warren and Hell’s Kitchen

The figure above shows both Warren and the Hell’s Kitchen in reference to the North

Pole. The angle between Warren and the Hell’s Kitchen is acquired by calculating the difference

between the two. The angle that is formed with Warren, the North Pole, and the Hell’s Kitchen is

9.0333°.

Figure 5. Distance Between Warren and Hell’s Kitchen
The figure above shows the distance between Warren, Michigan and Hell’s Kitchen. In

order to find this, the Spherical Law of Cosines was used. The angle values that were used were
Haque 5

calculated in Figures 2, 3, and 4. The value of a was calculated to equal 23.3691°, but in order to

find the distance it must be divided by 360° and multiplied by 2π(3960). The distance between

Warren and Hell’s Kitchen was calculated to be 481.525 miles.

For my next destination we will go from Hell’s Kitchen, NY (Destination 1) to

Albuquerque, NM (Destination 2). Albuquerque, in the show is shown as a scorching place to

live in and is surrounded by desert. In real life, this also is true. As you watched through the

show you watched how an average family man’s life fell apart and how he became a crime lord

in a span of a few years. The coordinates for Albuquerque are 35°5’ N and 106°39’ W. The

angle Hell’s Kitchen makes with the North Pole was calculated to be 49.2233° in Figure 3.

The figure above shows Albuquerque in reference to the North Pole. The latitude of the

city is 35° 5’, which means that it is 35° 5’ above the equator. This latitude was subtracted from

90° which gave us an angle of 54.9167°.

cos(𝑎) = cos(54.9167°) ∗ cos( 49.2233°) + sin(54.9167°) ∗ sin( 49.2233°) ∗ cos(32.6667°)

Figure 9. Distance Between Albuquerque and Hell’s Kitchen

Haque 7

The figure above shows the distance between Hell’s Kitchen and Albuquerque. In order

to find this, the Spherical Law of Cosines was used. The angle values that were used were

calculated in Figures 3, 7, and 8. The value of a was calculated to equal 26.2272°, but in order to

find the distance it must be divided by 360° and multiplied by 2π(3960). The distance between

Albuquerque and Hell’s Kitchen was calculated to be 1812.69 miles.

For my next destination, we will be going from Albuquerque to Seattle (Destination 3).

For Seattle, both in the show and in in real life it is portrayed in having high-rises and being next

to a mass of water of some kind. In the show Arrow similar to Daredevil, he puts on a costume

and goes hunting for criminals at night while he runs his company during the day. The

coordinates for Seattle are 47°36’ N and 122°20’ W. The angle Albuquerque makes with the

North Pole was calculated to be 54.9167° in Figure 7.

also is home to the Space Needle.

Figure 13. Distance Between Seattle and Albuquerque

The figure above shows the distance between Seattle and Albuquerque. In order to find

this the Spherical Law of Cosines was used. The angle values that were needed were calculate in

Figure 7,11, and 12. The value of a was calculated to equal 17.1201°, but in order to find the

distance it must be divided by 360° and multiplied by 2π(3960). The distance between

Albuquerque and Seattle was calculated to be 1183.25 miles.

Sadly, my journey must come to an end and I must return home back to Warren. The

angle for Warren in reference to the North Pole is 47.4833° as calculated in Figure 2. The angle

for Seattle in reference to the North Pole was calculated to be 42.4° as shown in Figure 11.

The figure above shows the distance between Seattle and Warren. This was found using

the Spherical Law of Cosines. The value angle value was calculated to be 27.9239°. The angle

values that were used to help calculate were found in Figure 2, 11, and 14. The value of a was

calculated to equal 27.9239°, but in order to find the distance it must be divided by 360° and
Haque 11

multiplied by 2π(3960). The distance between the Seattle and Warren was calculated to equal

1929.96 miles.

Sadly, I must return back home. I have went all around the United States visiting three

different destinations being Hell’s Kitchen, Albuquerque, and Seattle. I wanted to do this in the

shortest distance possible. In order to this I used the Spherical Law of Cosines to find the shortest

possible distance. The distance from Warren to Hell’s Kitchen was 481.525 miles. The distance

from Hell’s Kitchen to Albuquerque was 1812.69 miles. The distance from Albuquerque to

Seattle was 1183.25 miles. Finally, the distance from Seattle to Warren was 1929.96 miles. The

total distance traveled was 5407.43 miles
