REFLECTION AS A PHYSICAL SCIENCE TEACHER

As part of the B Ed
curriculum we were asked
to reflect our experiences
as a physical science
teacher. Our four month
teaching experience has
contributed a lot in
moulding us a perfect
teacher. It has carved out the best part in us as a teacher.
I have selected Baker Memorial G H S S,KOTTAYAM for my four month school
induction. Initially it was like having a chip on my shoulder. I was really confused regarding the
behaviour of students ,attitude of teachers towards me,classroom management etc. But on
contrary to my anxities and worries the faculty , both the teaching and nonteaching staff of the
school were really supportive and caring. Also the students were very loving and smart. My
experiences went above and beyond my expectations that I had in the beginning. It was really a
great experience.
I have got both VIII th and IX th standards for teaching. I have got two divisions in
VIIIth standard and one division in IX th standard for teaching. Both were English medium
classes. I was supposed to teach Physics in one of the division of VIIIth standard and Chemistry
in one division of VIIIth standard and also in the IXth standard. Since my specialisation is
Chemistry it was difficult for me to dealt with Physics but my peer helped me alot in clarifying
my doubts and guiding me.

PREPARATION OF LESSON PLANS


After getting the lessons to teach I have divided the lessons into smaller units and I have
prepared lesson plans for a duration of 40 minutes. While preparing lesson plans I have tried to
set an instructional objective and the classroom activities were planned in order to fullfill my
objective. I have given prior importance in selecting the sensitisation part since it plays a key
role in grabbing the attention of the child. I used to select stories,games,questions in the
sensitisation part to make it more interesting. After the sensitisation part I used to select more
interactive activities to convey my concepts or ideas in the class. I have tried to incorporate more
precise and clear questions for the students to answer. In the application part I used to include
some questions to check the understanding of the students regarding the topic taught. Sometimes
I were not able to complete the lesson plan on time but usually I managed to make it.

PREPARATION FOR TEACHING


I always tried to study and understand thoroughly the concept which I have to convey to
my students before each class. I used to update myself with latest knowledge regarding the topic.
Also I tried to collect many examples, more related to daily life,related to the topic. Lack of
facilities in the school lab made me to do the experiments virtually in the classroom. I have used
different teaching aids during my classroom teaching.

TEACHING STYLE
Throughout my classes, I have used a variety of teaching methods. I have mostly played a
facilitator’s role in which I have been involving students and myself in active learning. I have
always offered opportunities to students to be involved actively in the learning process, to make
use of their own experience, and to assume responsibility for their learning. I have adopted
innovative methods like role play model,concept attainment model,5 E,7 E.Inquiry training
model in my teaching. Though there are some flaws I have faced while trying these techniques , I
have learned to use these techniques wherever it suits.

EVALUATION OF STUDENTS
I used to conduct tests and ask questions to evaluate the students learning process.
Normally questions were selected based on different levels of difficulty and also its applicability.
Due to time constraints I was not able to conduct the tests systematically or frequently.
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
During my school induction I have
supported in coordinating different extra
curricular activities in school.
Coordination of science club
activities,artsfest,science exhibition,sports
day etc helped me to understand about the
hard work and planning it really demands
to make these activities more effective.
Also I understood the importance of these
activities in moulding a perfect child.

Overall the teaching experience was a change maker in my life. Peer evaluation,students
feedback helped me to improve myself and my teaching to a greater extend. I feel that I have
learned a lot of lessons that would lead to my future professional development. As I look into
the future, I am even more determined to continue improving myself in all areas of teaching by
following my strengths and correcting my weaknesses. I will definitely utilise the opportunities I
have to improve myself,my students and thereby my society. What is absolutely clear in my
mind is that the best is only that which is good for my students. I would always continue to
aspire to make a difference in their lives and make them aware that someone was there for them
at the time that they needed the most help.
