SMILING TUMMIES OC: LEO TENG CHENG FATT Cooking together
Smiling Tummies is a project that was resurrected in July 2015 after months of inactivity
due to lack of participation. It is a collaborative project between LEO Club TCSH and volunteers
at the Buddhist Maha Vihara Temple in Brickfields. This project originated from “Cooking for The
Needy”, which is a soup kitchen project held on Sundays in the temple. The Leo Club of TCSH has
agreed to collaborate and send a consistent amount of 12-15 volunteers to help out on the first
week’s Sunday of every month.
The objective of this project is to cater a simple meal of 3 dishes and rice to approximately
250 needy individuals. They includ e orphans and old folks from Trinity Home and Charis Home,
as well as the homeless in Kota Raya. We wish to provide them a warm and hearty meal for the
night, which befits the name of our project, “Smiling Tummies”, that aims to satiate their hungers
and to hopefully brighten their nights.
In every Smiling Tummies’ session, we will divide ourselves into 3 groups that handle the
washing, cutting and cooking respectively. The dishes vary from session to session, but we usu-
ally prepare eggs and vegetables. We will gather at the kitchen in the afternoon. After acquiring
the utensils, we’ll start by first cooking the rice and washing the vegetables. When cooking, we
are required to follow the instructions given by the “chef of the day” who will be appointed by the
organisation. After we have washed the utensils and cleaned the kitchen, we will queue up in two
rows to pack the food in plastic containers and bags to be transported by the organisations to their
respective locations. However, due to security concerns our volunteers are not involved in the
process of distributing the food.
So far, we have managed to volunteer every month owing to our members’ endless support
and enthusiasm and we hope to maintain this spirit in the future. Despite being a simple activity, it
is also a different kind of exposure to us, who are fortunate enough to have food on the table ev-
ery night. Through this project, we are made aware of the societal issues and inequalities present
as a team!
today. More importantly, it reminds us to treasure every meal, to be appreciative and grateful for
what we have in life without taking things for granted.

AGATHIANS TUTORING
OC: LEO NICOLE TAN ZHIQING
This is an on-going project organized by the LEO Club of Taylor’s College Sri Hartamas, assisting 4
kids from the Agathians Home in their studies, specifically in English and Mathematics. This project
has helped to improve the tutees’ attitudes towards studying by instilling positive-thinking and a
growth mindset. For the 1st half of the 2016-2017 fiscal year, this project has been supported by
volunteers from the IBDP and CAL programmes. We have been trying to arrange weekly visits to
the home to guide them in their studies.

Our illustrious achievements this year have been making the kids becoming more focused in class,
developing their interest in arts and craft, and shaping their character towards a positive direction.
The volunteers had put in great amount of effort, applying and sharing their knowledge that they
had acquired to the kids.

“The kids are great and cheerful once you get to know them. They open up to you once they trust
you. They can be really funny and playful at times. They are the nicest kids with great personality.
They are eager to learn when we make the teaching more interactive,” said the project manager
of the previous fiscal year.

Activities we carried out in the class includes teaching the kids spelling, pronunciation and basic
mathematical concepts. Also, during tutoring sessions, our tutors try to incorporate interactive
games such as crossword puzzles, origami and drawing sessions for the kids to keep them engaged.

As the project manager myself, I have personally observed the progress of the kids since the
first time we met in July. Visagan, a considerably smart boy who is also cheeky and playful, was
able to sit still in class patiently learning by the end of September. On the other hand, Thavinesh,
a quiet boy at first, showed impressive courage in class by speaking up among his study mates
after a while. Seeing their excellent progression in this short amount of time had definitely been a Nicole, Organising Chairperson of this event, A tutee solving problems on the board

Recycling has always been a progressive and col-
