Alfine 11 Speed

Overhaul
Instructions

Dealer service manual and exploded view diagram can be downloaded at http://si.shimano.com
Before you begin:
Alfine 11 speed hubs are filled with an oil bath. This oil must be removed before you begin disassembly. Refer to the
dealer manual for instructions on removing the oil. As you disassemble the hub, you can wipe down the pieces but
no additional cleaning should be necessary. If any solvents are used, be sure to rinse and dry all of the parts before
reassembly. The oil bath inside the hub shell is the only lubrication that is needed inside the hub shell, no greases are
needed for the bearings or gear assemblies.

Disassembly:
1. Remove the cog and rotor and clamp the
non-drive side of the axle in a bench vise.
To avoid damage to the threads on the axle,
be sure to only clamp the flat section. Use
smooth vise jaws instead of textured ones
if possible. Do not use an axle vise with a
round hole to clamp the axle. These are
not able to keep the axle from spinning in
the vise. Some axle vises have a smooth
flat section, these are an excellent fit for
Shimano Internally Geared Hubs and save
you from having to turn around or swap out
your vise jaws.

2. Use TL-AF10 to remove the large drive side

dust cap. Note that it is reverse threaded.
3. Install the cassette joint unit.
4. Flip the hub over and clamp the drive side
of the axle in the vise.
5. Use a 15 mm and 17 mm cone wrench to
remove the lock nut and cone.

6. Pull the hub shell off of the internal

assembly. You now have a bare internal
assembly.
7. Use an awl or a screwdriver that you use for
prying to remove the E-clip from the end of
the planetary gear carrier. Be careful not
to let the clip fly across the room when it is
removed. Placing a rag over the clip before
it’s removed is a good way to catch it.
8. Use the arm on the cassette joint unit to
shift the hub all the way across its range
where it stops in first gear.

9. Hold the arm on the cassette joint unit

in the first gear position and then lift the
entire planetary gear carrier assembly off
of the axle. The pieces are not attached to
each other so be careful when lifting them
off of the axle. You will install the pieces
one at a time so don’t worry if they come
apart.
10. Remove the large bearing retainer from the
axle assembly.
11. Flip the axle over and clamp the non-drive
side in the vise.

12. Remove the cassette joint unit.

13. Remove the drive side lock nut with a 17
mm cone wrench.
14. Remove the joint unit stop washer.
15. Remove the lock washer and its seal. Be
careful not to damage the rubber seal on
the threads of the axle as you lift it off.

16. Remove the driver plate.

17. The cone is pressed on and will need to be
removed and later reinstalled with special
tools. Open the jaws of the vise and rest
the driver unit on top of the open jaws. Do
not clamp the driver unit in the vise. The
goal is to support the driver unit and cone
while pushing the axle downward with the
special tool.
18. Do not attempt to remove the cone without
the special tool - it will break. Install TL-
S701 over the axle and into the opening on
the cone.
19. Hold the axle steady below the vise jaws
with one hand and gently tap on the tool
with a hammer until the cone is free from
the axle. Alternatively, you can simply hold
the driver unit in your hand while tapping
the special tool.

20. As soon as the cone is free, clamp the axle

back into the vise. The driver unit is now
simply resting on top of the clutch return
spring.
21. Remove the special tool.
22. Remove the cone.
23. Remove the driver unit.

24. Use a screwdriver that you use for prying

to remove the drive side seal ring. If you
plan to reuse the seal, be very gentle when
removing it.
25. Remove the bearing retainer.
Assembly:
1. Install a new bearing retainer into the driver
unit.
2. Lubricate the new seal with a little bit of the
SG-S700 oil.

3. Place the seal into the seal set tool, TL-

S704.
4. Use the seal set tool to press the seal into
the driver unit.
5. With the axle clamped in the vise, make
sure that the clutch return spring is sitting
in its groove on the clutch.
6. Align the spring into its groove inside the
driver unit.
7. Push the driver unit down onto the clutch,
and turn it until the two large grooves align
and the driver unit settles all the way down.

8. Temporarily press the cone on by hand to

hold the driver unit in place.
9. Set the special tool, TL-S702 over the cone.
10. Tap the cone onto the axle until it stops. It
does not take much pressure. Alternatively,
you can simply hold the driver unit in your
hand while you tap the cone onto the axle.
This will ensure that you do not damage the
threads on the axle where it is clamped into
the vise.
11. Install the driver plate onto the two tabs
that stick out past the cone. The driver
plate can be oriented in four different ways
and only one of them will work. Make sure
that the wide tabs on the driver plate are in
the upper right and lower left positions.

12. Install the lock washer seal into the lock

washer.
13. In order to prevent damage to the seal
when sliding it over the threaded axle, it’s
best to assemble the lock washer and joint
nut stop washer together.
14. Hold all three pieces together and slide
them onto the axle.
15. Thread the lock nut onto the axle and
tighten it with a 17 mm cone wrench to 25-
30 Nm.
16. Install the cassette joint unit.

17. Turn the axle assembly over and clamp the

drive side in the vise.
18. Install the large bearing retainer.
19. Many of the following steps require the
11th gear 1st gear
cassette joint unit to be shifted all the way
to first gear. That’s because this is the
only gear where all of the shifting pawls lay
down out of the way. It’s also the only gear Groove Groove
where the groove that lines up with many
tabbed washers is continuous from end to
end. You do not need to hold the hub in Pawls Pawls
first gear between steps.

20. Install carrier unit 1. Make sure the teeth

of the planetary gears are engaged with
the teeth of the sun gear. You will have to
rotate it counter clockwise slightly as you
install it in order to get the roller clutch on
the driver unit to engage with the inside of
the ring gear.
21. Shift the cassette joint unit to first gear and
hold it there.
22. Install sun gear 2.

23. With the hub held in first gear, install carrier

unit 2. Make sure the teeth of the planetary
gears mesh with the sun gear.
24. With the hub held in first gear, install sun
gear 3 guide ring with the marking facing
up. Make sure the tab on the guide ring is
aligned with the groove on the axle.
25. After this step, there is no more need to
hold the cassette joint unit in first gear.

26. Install carrier unit 3. You may need to

rotate the ring gear counter-clockwise to
get it to settle all the way on to the roller
clutch of carrier unit 2.
27. There are two slide springs at the top of Groove
the piece you just installed, carrier unit 3.
These are the carrier 3 slide spring and the Tabs
sun gear 4 slide spring. They each have a
tab that needs to be aligned in a specific
way before the carrier hold plate can be
installed. It’s easy to move them around
with your fingers or a screwdriver.
28. Align one of the slide spring tabs with the
groove in the axle.
29. Align the other slide spring tab directly
opposite the first one. It does not matter
which one is in which position.

30. Install the carrier hold plate. Make sure the

tab is in the groove on the axle and that the
two slide spring tabs line up with the two
holes.
31. Install the E clip into the groove on the axle.
Line it up and then pull it onto the axle
using pliers. If the groove is not visible,
make sure each piece is completely settled
down onto the piece below it.

32. Replace the non-drive side bearing and seal.

Use a screwdriver that you use for prying to
remove the non-drive side seal ring. If you
plan to reuse the seal, be very gentle when
removing it.
33. Remove and replace the drive non-drive
side bearing retainer.
34. Lubricate the new seal with a little bit of the
SG-S700 oil.
35. Place the seal into the seal set tool, TL-
S704.
36. Use the seal set tool to press the seal into
the hub shell.

37. Install the hub shell onto the internal

assembly. You may have to rotate it
counter-clockwise to get it to settle all the
way down onto the roller clutches.
38. Install the cone and tighten it with a 15 mm
cone wrench until play in the hub is gone
but it still spins freely.
39. Hold the cone in place and tighten the lock
nut against it using a 17 mm cone wrench.
40. Turn the hub over and clamp the non-drive
side axle into the vise.

41. Remove the cassette joint unit.

42. Install the drive side dust cap using TL-
AF01. Note that it is reverse threaded.
The seal should only be lightly tightened to
prevent crushing the rubber seal. If it is
over-tightened, the hub may leak oil.
43. Fill the hub with oil as described in the
dealer manual.
44. Install the cog and rotor.
