1 Function Description

1.1 Application
The steam regulating valve is designed to
regulate the flow of steam, water of all
temperatures, or thermal oil.

1.2 Design
The valve has a two-way valve housing and a
24 V AC motor drive. The valve spindle is
moved to the open, closed, or any
intermediate position by the motor drive
mounted on the valve housing.

1.2.1 Motor Drive Assembly
The motor drive is mounted on top of the
valve housing by two Allen screws (7) and a
bracket (6) which clamp the drive mounting
frame (2) to the valve neck (5).
A female coupling on the drive operating shaft
(3) is screwed onto the valve spindle, secured
in a fixed position by a locking nut (4).

1.2.2 Valve
The upper part of the valve housing (12)
forms the valve neck (11) with inside threads
for the stuffing box (1) and for mounting of
the motor drive. The stuffing box components
provide a high temperature seal for the spindle
(9).

To improve sealing, teflon inserts (2, 8) are

fitted in recesses in the lower guide boss (7)
and the stuffing box (1). A stuffing box gasket
(3) prevents leakage through the thread.

1.2.3 Motor Drive

The main parts of the motor drive is a gear
housing and frame assembly and a gear plate.

Power supply 24 V 50/60 Hz AC should be

supplied by a 3-core cable, providing
common, open and close signals. The leads
are connected at the limit switch terminals.

The valves have different plug and spindle C. Capacitor
assemblies to obtain the different flow rates.
There are four different bore sizes with
different valve housings and bottom cover
gaskets. The remaining components are
identical in all valves.

2 Maintenance

2.1 Preventive
Maintenance
No preventive maintenance of the motor drive
is recommended.

The stuffing box seals should be periodically

checked, and the valve inspected for erosion
and cavitation damages. Any worn parts must
be replaced.

The frequency of valve maintenance

necessary to avoid breakdown can vary
between every three months and a number of
years depending on the working environment.

2.2 Replacing the Motor

Drive
1. Switch the power supply off.
2. Remove the cover of the new motor drive.
3. Check that the operating shaft (4) is in an
intermediate position near the closed
position. The lower cam (3) on the
camshaft (1) should be to the left of the
corresponding switch lever. If necessary,
use the crank to move the shaft.
4. Rotate the crank clockwise and make sure
that the operating shaft (4) moves
upwards. Continue until the lower cam (3)
opens the inner limit switch (5).

The drive is now in the “valve closed”

position. Place the crank in the storage

5. Remove the cover from the old drive.

6. Make a note of the connections, then
disconnect the leads.
7. Unscrew the cable gland nut inside the
gear housing and pull the cable out.
8. Use a tommy bar to hold the spindle. Do
not rotate the spindle. Loosen the locking
nut and unscrew the coupling.
9. Unscrew the two Allen screws and remove
the bracket.
10. Remove the motor drive from the valve
housing.
11. Push the valve spindle fully down and

screw the locking nut down as far as
possible.
12. Mount the new motor drive on the valve
housing and replace the bracket.
13. Screw the coupling down the spindle.
Continue until an increased resistance
indicates that the spindle plug is mating
with the valve seat.
14. The valve is now fully closed. Tighten the
locking nut against the coupling.
15. Fit the cable gland parts on the cable.
Insert the cable into the gear housing and
secure the gland with the gland nut.

16. Connect the leads in their original

positions and replace the motor drive
cover.
17. Run a system test to check that the motor
drive is operating properly.

2.3 Recondition the Valve

1. Shut off the supply of heating medium.

WARNING

Burn hazard

Steam and other heating media may

cause serious burns.

2. Switch off the power supply to the motor

drive with the drive in the closed position.
3. To avoid disconnecting the cable, arrange
a temporary support for the motor drive
clear of the valve.
4. Use a tommy bar to hold the spindle. Do
not rotate the spindle. Loosen the locking
nut and unscrew the coupling.

5. Unscrew the two Allen screws and remove
the bracket.
6. Remove the motor drive from the valve
housing and put it down on the temporary
support.
7. Loosen the flange bolts and remove the
valve from the piping system.
8. Remove the 4 bolts (16), valve bottom
cover (15), and gasket (14).
9. Pull the valve plug (13) and spindle (9) out
through the valve bottom.
N.B. The valve plug and spindle in valves
1763170-01, -02, and -03 are in one
piece and must be screwed out.
10. Unscrew the stuffing box (1) from the
valve neck (11) at the top of the valve
housing.

11. From underneath, use a drift to gently

push out the remaining sealing parts from
the valve neck, and pull the teflon foil (2)
out from the stuffing box.
12. Examine the valve plug and spindle and
the valve seating for erosion and
cavitation.
If the mating surface on the valve plug is
deformed or pitted, use a new plug and
spindle.
Similar damage in the valve seating may
be removed by grinding in the new plug
with fine grinding paste. If this is not
possible a complete new valve must be
used. See section ‘‘2.4 Replacing the
Valve’’ on page 9.

13. Make sure that the inside of the valve is

thoroughly clean, then replace the plug
and spindle.
On valves 1763170-01, -02, and -03,
grease the thread on the plug and spindle
unit, screw the unit back in place, and
tighten with a wrench.
14. Using a new gasket, assemble the bottom
cover (15).
15. Slide the new stuffing box parts onto the
spindle:
Lower spindle guide boss (7)
Spring (6)
Upper spindle guide boss (5)
Teflon sealing disc (4)(6 pcs.)
Stuffing box gasket (3)

16. Fit the new teflon foil (2) into the stuffing
box, slide the stuffing box onto the spindle
and tighten.
17. Using new gaskets, fit the valve to the

piping system and tighten the flange bolts.

18. Push the valve spindle fully down and

screw the locking nut down as far as
possible.
19. Mount the new motor drive on the valve
housing and assemble the bracket.
20. Use a tommy bar to hold the spindle. Do
not rotate the spindle. Screw the coupling
down the spindle. Continue until an
increased resistance indicates that the
spindle plug is mating with the valve seat.
21. The valve is now fully closed. Tighten the
locking nut against the coupling.
22. Run a system test to check that the valve is
operating properly.

2.4 Replacing the Valve

8. Fit the new valve and gaskets to the piping
and tighten the flange bolts.
9. Push the valve spindle fully down and
screw the locking nut down as far as
possible.
10. Mount the motor drive on the valve
housing and replace the bracket.
11. Use a tommy bar to hold the spindle. Do
not rotate the spindle. Screw the coupling
down the spindle. Continue until an
increased resistance indicates that the
spindle plug is mating with the valve seat.
12. The valve is now fully closed. Tighten the
locking nut against the coupling.
13. Run a system test to check that the new
valve is operating properly.

4 Installation

4.1 Specification
There must be enough free space to allow for
maintenance and repair.

The ambient temperature must be within the

range -5 to +55 °C.

The valve must be installed to close against
the operating pressure. In the illustration, the
inlet is to the right.

The valve must not be installed with the motor

drive upside down.

4.2 Procedure
1. Fit the valve and motor assembly to the
piping system.
2. Remove the motor drive cover and the
plastic protection in the cable entry.

3. Slide the cable gland parts on to the cable.

4. Insert the cable and secure it by tightening
the gland nut.
5. Connect the cable leads to the switch
terminals:
• Common Pin 1

• Valve Open Pin 2
• Valve Close Pin 3

6. Fit the motor drive cover and run a system

test to check that the valve assembly is
operating properly.
