A STUDY ON INTERNET USAGE IS GOOD OR BAD

IN PMIST – VALLAM, THANJAVUR.

ABSTRACT:
In this fast age life of every human who is using mobile tablet, computer or laptop is
meaningless or bore. And we can also say that more than half world connected with internet.
Before the internet came into existence to communicate with someone who isn’t in the same
room as you, we could have call them on a phone. Or if you wanted to send a letter through
snail mail. Unfortunately, the ability to send and receive e-mails also created a means for
cyber criminals to distribute span and malware.

INTRODUCTION:

Modern life has become more easier and the people of the world thanks to the immense
contribution of the internet technology to communication and information sharing. There is
no doubt that the internet has made our life become easier and more convenient. We can use
internet to communicate with people around the world doing business by using internet make
new friend and know different cultures searching information, studying and so on.

The internet not only allows for communication through email but also makes easy
availability of information, images and products amongst other things. Everyday the internet
continues to provide a new facility, something new that is immensely convenient and that
makes life easier for web users. However the internet also contains some unwanted elements
or disadvantages. We can’t imagine the world without internet.

LITERATURE REVIEW:

1. Hyung chun kim published this paper in 2011 Advanced information technology
brings not only good effects but also bad effects to people’s lives . In this paper, he
analyze the relationship between Korean information culture index and the internet
and mobile phone addiction for Korean adolescent. Next, he analyze the relationships
between KICI and the two addiction levels with regression analysis to see how KICI
affects the two addictions. Finally, he propose a better educational way to improve
KICI level and to decrease the two addiction levels for Korean adolescent.

2. OSARETIN, NIGERIA published the paper Is the internet good or bad? There is
currently a lot of debate surrounding the topic of the internet. On one hand, many
people feel that the internet is having a negative impact on our society. Their reasons
include topics such as cyber safety or more specifically; pornographic sites, piracy,
fraud and other nasty stuff. Many of these people feel that the use of the internet
should be highly restricted in order to ensure the safety of the general public. Others
argue that how and why the public uses the internet should be left up to the individual
in question to decide.

3. ANTHONY researched ,”Is the Internet helpful or harmful? Has the Internet given
criminals a better chance of getting away with crimes? Can people violate our privacy
over the Internet? Statistics show that it is not safe to make purchases over the Internet.
"The National Consumer’s League fielded more then 8,000 distinct reports of online
fraud, a 600% increase over the past two years

4. Kurt wagner published a paper “Is the internet is good and bad for society “ in may 6
2018 , More people are giving the internet mixed reviews, according to data from Pew
Research, which found an increase in the percentage of people who think the internet
has had both positive and negative impacts on society.The percentage of people who
think the internet is good for society is shrinking. Roughly 70 percent of American
adults who use the internet believe it’s mostly good for society, down from 76 percent
in 2014, Pew found.
5. Sampath Kumar and G.Manjunath, (2013) researched to find out the academic .The
study clearly shows that the impact of internet on teachers and researchers. This study
found a high use of the internet by teachers and research students in university. Most
of respondents used internet service to support their study, research and teaching. They
accepted that they learnt to use the internet with the help of friends. The results of
study also showed that internet use has improved their academic performance

6. Anita (2013) summed up that there was a significant connection between residential
background and emotional maturity of Internet users. The study also confirmed that
there was an interactive influence between academic discipline and regularity of use
on emotional maturity of Internet users.

Hypothesis:
H0: There is No significant relationship between PMIST students and their internet
usage.

H1: There is a significant relationship between PMIST students and their internet
usage.

Objectives:
EDUCATION : How the students use effectively the internet for education

ENTERTAINMENT : How the students use effectively the internet for entertainment

BUSINESS AND SHOPPING: How the students use effectively the internet for business
and shopping.

INFERENCE:
The above table describe, that the calculated value (3.05) is greater than the table
value (23.647) where degree of freedom is 4 and 19.P-value is (2.48) it shows that this
research does not have any significance. Finally there searcher reject the null hypothesis (H0)
and accept the alternative hypothesis (H1).
CONCLUSION:
Internet is like a double edged sword which can be used for both positive and negative
purposes. We can’t imagine our world now a days without mobiles and internet. They
mingled with our daily life very much and they are inseparable from us. Use internet in the
positive way and it will become the best mentor.
