BAROMETER

AUTHOR: Miguel Angel Salinas Sanchez

“INTRODUCTION”

A barometer is an instrument used to measure atmospheric pressure, it is that to say the force per
unit area exerted by a liquid or gas perpendicularly to that surface. In this essay, I will describe the
controversial story about the invention of the barometer. Finally, I will conclude giving my opinion
about the importance of the barometer.

“DEVELOPMENT”

The first barometer was developed by the Evangelist Torricelli, who was an Italian physicist and
mathematician in 1644, whose design was based on the elasticity of the metals that contained a
water column of 10.3 m pressed by the atmospheric force.

However, the name of this tool does not appear until 1676, when Edme Mariotte coined the
original name of this artifact, being one of the pioneers of experimental physics.

So it is said that this tool was invented nothing more and nothing less than in 1644, also it is was
said about disputes over the authorship of these.

In the seventeenth century, Blaise Pascal had discovered a unit of pressure measurement that
today bears his name, which years later, Torricelli use to culminate his wonderful creation and, so
giving scientists the opportunity to measure the pressure atmospheric.

“CONCLUSION”

The barometer has proven to be extremely important, not only because of its immediate utility as
an atmospheric pressure meter.

If not, for all the possibilities of development that this has allowed in science, technologies and in
the society.

We have been able to observe how, from the beginning, this simple device was the result of a great
amount of ingenuity, but over the years the barometer was more useful for so that to understand
our environment.
