The last page consists of a Seal Engineering Request form in which we request for data
to suggest suitable ‘O’ Ring size and specifications as materials and Back-up rings to be
used. You are most welcome to interact with us on your new applications.
The dimensional tolerances on the ‘O’ Ring I.D. and cross sections followed by us are
specified on pages 2 & 3.
The clearance between two metal surfaces (Extrusion gap) is critical for effective
sealing. A higher clearance than recommended leads to failure due to extrusion of the
seal material in the gap.

We have observed that the service temperature being mentioned in your specifications are
not compatible with those recommended by us or by manufacturers of the materials.
In the case of Viton, we reproduce below a graph of the expected service life of Viton at
different operating temperatures.
In view of the above, your operating temperature range of upto 250 o C is within limits;
however we recommend a maximum continuous operating temperature of 200 o C for
optimum service life in Viton products as ‘O’ Rings.
Also in some cases the lower temperature mentioned does not meet the values of the
general grade of the material. These lower temperatures can only be achieved by special
grades of the material as in the case of Viton GLT and hence we recommend that the
special compound / grade of material is highlighted in the name or content of the
specification. In this regard your HNBR specification also shows a much lower limit of
minus 50 o C than the normal operating temperature range of –25 o C.
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Spare-Age has codified over 200 different compounds in more than 20 different materials.
Each compound has different properties to suit the application specified by the customer.
The properties of the material are suitably modified by compounding to meet the
application parameters eg. A higher shore hardness is required for higher pressure rating.
All the properties of the elastomer cannot be achieved at the same time. Some values
have to be sacrificed to achieve the other. A simple link in the relative values of the
elastomer can be stated as “ An increase in the hardness results in higher compression set
lower tensile strength and lower elongation”
The physical properties can vary significantly between materials. In Neoprene & HNBR
it is possible to achieve tensile strength of 15 MPA (150kg/cm2). In Viton a higher
tensile strength above 13 MPA can be achieved at the cost of seriously high compromise
with the compression set values which is not advisable for ‘O’ Rings.
Also kindly note that some of the properties may relate to newer grades of expensive
materials like Kalrez (FFKM) and may not be achieved in general grades of
Viton(FKM).
Since we have a number of compounds in each materials we can always offer our
recommendations for the properties.
