INTRODUCTION

Ergonomic hazard is one of the common hazard that happen in workplace as it involve with
human activities. To evaluate the hazard is by conducting Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) and
Rapid Office Strain Assessment (ROSA) in workplace.

RULA is an evaluation of the individual exposure to ergonomic hazard that related with upper
extremity Musculoskeletal Disorder risk factors (Mark Middlesworth, n.d. – a). MSDs are injuries and
disorders resulting from repetitive work task that affecting the movement of human body or
musculoskeletal system such as muscles, ligaments, nerves, discs, blood vessels, etc (Matt
Midllesworth, n d.).

In RULA, the MDS element that were assessed includes neck, trunk and upper extremities
which can cause ergonomic hazard. The posture that evaluated in RULA assessment worksheet was
divided into two section which Section A for the arm and wrist and section B for the neck and trunk.

There are 15 steps in RULA worksheet, eight steps in requires to be analyze in Section A while
seven steps in requires to be analyze in Section B. Using the RULA worksheet, each of the specific body
regions (upper arm, lower arm, wrist, neck, trunk, and legs) will be evaluated and giving a score. After
all the result is collected and scored, tables on the form are used to compile the risk factor variables
that will generate a single score which represents the level of MSD risk. The scoring level of MSD is as
table below:

Meanwhile, in ROSA, the checklist is fastest way to identify and measure the risk factor in
ergonomics of work surrounding. It measure a level risk related at workplace by assign risk factors to
different section of an office workstation as how much time is spend at each of posture. Basically, a
picture of body posture checklist is used to determine the risk. A picture of people that observed also
taken as a record.
 In checklist, the posture are determined through chair, monitor, mouse and keyboard and
telephone with different of criteria each of them. Workstation in ROSA can be defined as technology
devices and sitting arrangement used in order to complete task or job given and . The technology and
devices are used daily in workstation may lead with work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSD).
It normally happen, for example, at the customer service centre when they need to maintain the body
posture for longer time. Hence it will cause an awkward postures of body. At the of results, the
condition of surrounding at the workplace is determine based on the guidelines

DISCUSSION

According to Guideline on ERA work place (2017), ergonomic risk is involvement of body
movement with the awkward posture, forceful and sustained exertions, repetitive motion, static and
sustained posture, vibration, contact stress and environmental risk factor. Most of the hazards that
are exposed more than the limit of comfortable time will contribute to Musculoskeletal Disorder
(MSD) risk factor.

The exposure scores of MSD were divided into four exposure categories: negligible, low,
medium and high respectively. For medium and high risk, actions of changes should be immediately
investigated and implemented to reduce the level of exposure of the risk factors. (Ansari & Sheikh,
2014).

In this practical, the objectives are to evaluate the ROSA and RULA assessment at chosen
workstation, to identify level of exposure of MSD risk factor on staff and student of UniKL MICET at
chosen workstation and to identify the type of control can be implemented to reduce the risk. This
practical was conducted in two different workstation which are Student Development Campus
Lifestyle (SDCL) and Chemical Laboratory.

In ROSA, there are three sections to be evaluated which are Section A for chair, Section B for
monitor and phone and Section C for keyboard and mouse. For section A, the scoring was evaluated
based on chair height, pan depth, arm rest and back rest. For section B, the scoring was evaluated
based on monitor position score, duration of monitor, position and usage phone score and duration
of phone. For section C the scoring was evaluated based on keyboard score keyboard score, duration
of keyboard, mouse score and duration of mouse.

ROSA mainly evaluate the designed workstation to quantify exposure to risk factors in an
office work environment while RULA is an evaluation of the individual exposure to ergonomic hazard.
In ROSA evaluation, there are five persons per workstation are evaluated while in RULA, only one
person from each workstation is evaluated.

In this practical, the photos of people performing their work at the selected workstation was
taken and critical analysis of the observational data available in ROSA assessment worksheet was
carried out. After that, the most person who obtain the highest ROSA mark will be assess with RULA
assessment to calculate the MSD risk factor on the person’s posture.

ROSA assessment average score in Laboratory Building is 2.2. It can be diagnosed that the
MSD risk factor is low but change may be needed to lower the score to 1 – 2 to make it negligible risk.
The change or control for this risk is administrative control. Applying administrative control is by safe
work practice. By changing the posture body into more comfortable and suitable position will less the
risk of MSD. Besides that, UniKL MICET also can create a training and retraining program about good
posture in workplace by using outside instructor.

For RULA assessment, one of the student in Laboratory Building was chosen as she is among
all those that scored 3 in ROSA. The RULA score for the student was assessed and was calculated to
be 4. From the worksheet, Section A for the arm and wrist and section B for the neck and trunk. For
section A, the score was calculated to be 4 and for section B the score is 4. The data for both section
was put into table C that will give the final score of RULA and the score was 4.

ROSA assessment average score in Student Development Campus Lifestyle (SDCL) is 2.6. It can
be diagnosed that the MSD risk factor is low but change may be needed to lower the score to 1 – 2 to

3 in ROSA. The RULA score for the staff was assessed and was calculated to be 3. From the worksheet,
Section A for the arm and wrist and section B for the neck and trunk. For section A, the score was
calculated to be 3 while for section B, the score was 3. The data for both section was put into table C
that will give the final score of RULA and the score was 3. From results of both workstation, can be
concluded that the Chemical Laboratory MSD risk is higher than in SDCL which may be due to its
limitation of requirement in lab.
CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

For the conclusion, this practical, ergonomic risk assessment had been done by doing ROSA
and RULA assessment. This practical was involved 10 respondents which are student and staff from
UniKL MICET from different workplace which are Student Development and Campus Lifestyle (SDCL)
and Laboratory Building. The result of ROSA from SDCL and Chemical Laboratory was compare and the
ROSA score for SDCL is 2.6 and for Laboratory Building is 2.2. For RULA score, in SDCL is 3 while in
Chemical Laboratory is 4. The Chemical Laboratory MSD risk is higher than in SDCL which may be due
to its limitation of requirement in lab. The workstation design was evaluated in ROSA and posture
evaluation was done in RULA to determine the risk of musculoskeletal disorder. For recommendation,
UniKL MICET need do training and retraining program about good posture in workplace to reduce the
risk of ergonomic hazard. In additional, all furniture must be set to reduce risk of ergonomic hazard
like the monitor need be at eye level.
