1. Defining intensive reading;
2. Identifying common purposes in reading and;
3. Responding appropriately to social issues (social media: Facebook) through
intensive reading.

Intensive reading or Reading to Learn is a process of reading a text or a poem that generally aims to
understand it.
Author’s purpose is the reason of the author why did he/she write such write-up.
There are three main purposes for writing, that is,
1. Writing to Entertain – to amuse the readers. Text examples are Stories, poems, dramas and etc.
2. Writing to Inform – to provide information about the topic. Such as Essays, articles, instructions
and Encyclopaedia
3. Writing to Persuade – to convince the readers. Such as Advertisement, campaign speeches and
persuasive letters.
ASSIGNMENT
Read intensively the text below, determine the author’s purpose and answer the follow-up
question.
There’s no frigate like a book,
To take you lands away.
Nor a courser like a ship,
Of prancing poetry.
This traverse may be the poorest take
Without oppress of toll,
How frugal is the chariot
That bears a human soul.
Question: As a youth, how would you convince your fellow to read good books and limit the
