*This lesson plan is intended for Pre-kindergarten.

Lessons extend to the whole day(half day)

and not just an hour. These children have short attention spans and keeping them for an hour is
not ideal. I have developed activities throughout the day and my goal is keep them interested
long enough for them to learn.

Introduction:
Hi kids, yesterday I taught you a song. Can anyone remember what song it was? (Pause and
wait for their response) Good job! Okay before we start our shape day, let’s sing the shape
song!
After the singing, wow! You guys did so well! Today we will learn more all about shapes! This
means that all our activities today will be related to shapes. Sounds fun? Okay, so let’s start with
watching a video about shapes found in a zoo! What shapes do you think are in a zoo? (Pause
and wait for them to answer) Oh yeah, I think you are right! Great job Now, let’s watch what
other shapes are found in a zoo. (Students will watch a presentation/slide I created from
powtoon. The presentation will be based from the book Color Zoo by Lois Ehlert. It will be
projected in a screen so everyone is able to watch.)

*I will teach them this shape song prior to the day dedicated to learn about shapes.

"We are shapes you can see us everywhere

I'm a square I'm square
u can see me everywhere
i have four sides
I'm a square I'm square

I'm circle I'm circle

i go round & round & round
i have only one side
I'm circle round & round

I'm triangle triangle

I'm pointy little shape
i have three sides
I'm triangle triangle

we are shapes you can see us everywhere

I'm rectangle rectangle

Like a really long square
i have a four sides
i'm a rectangle rectangle

I'm a star I'm star

in the sky so far
i have five pointy arms
I'm star I'm star

i am a heart i am a heart
I'm so curvy I'm so smart
I'm a really lovely shape
I'm a heart I'm a heart

I'm a diamond I'm a diamond

You can see me on a ring
I'm so shiny I'm so bright
I'm a diamond I'm a diamond
we are shapes you can see us everywhere."

Oh did you see all the shapes in the zoo? (Pause and wait for response) You are right! There
was a square, triangle, and circle! What else did you see? Were there animals who had
shapes? (Pause and wait for response).

Daily Reviews:
Everyday, during circle time we (me and my students) will sing the shape song. It is through
repetition that children are able to grasp and have a better understanding.

Daily Objective:
Students will be able to identify the basic shapes and eventually coordinate shapes to actual
objects in their environment.

Concept and Skill Development and Application:

I would develop a sorting activity that uses household items or items they can find in their
environment. Relating shapes with their environment will measure their understanding of the
concept. The sorting activity will be similar to this:
Guided Practice (Teacher led):
I would set up a sorting activity. There would be muffins pans provided and they have to sort
and group the shapes of the same kind. This will not only test the children’s knowledge about
shapes but practice their grip and grasp (fine motor skills).

Group Practice (Whole class or small groups):

We will play the I spy game. Instead of random objects I will make them find an object of the
same shape found on their magnifying glasses. All materials will be provided. I will divide the
class into two groups and each group has their own shape to find.
Independent Practice (Alone):
For this activity, the children will have a matching activity. Each child will be provided sheets
with shapes and shape blocks. They have to match the block with the drawing or paper.

Homework Assignments:
I believe pre-kindergarteners should not have homeworks. Primarily because they already spent
a whole day inside the classroom. These kids need to relax and have fun. But, if I were to give
them homework it would be an activity done with either their parents, aunties or uncles. It would
be interactive. I would set up a google classroom, setting up a google classroom can create an
easy access for parents to Inside the google classrooms are short games that the child and
parent can enjoy. For this week we are focusing on shapes, therefore all activities inside the
google classroom are about shapes.
Closure:
Since the children had a day full of activities, I will close our day with reading another book. This
will calm the kids down. The book I’ll read is The Shape of My Heart by Mark Sperring. I will use
an elmo projector so everyone can read the book with me. With the help of an elmo projector
kids will see the drawings and details found in the book.
