2. British fashion throug the ages

Fashion has gone through many changes over time. If before 1900 a certain trend in
fashion could take even 100 years or more, in the 20th century, with the development of mass
media, fashion changed at a much faster pace. From decade to decade, trends are changing more
and more rapidly, reaching what we call today's seasonal trends. Here are the most important
trends in the fashion of the last century. (In the following subchapters I will present you the most
important trends in British Fashion of the last century.- poti sa lasi asta daca iti place cum suna)

2.1. History of the British fashion

The 20s

The 20s were truly revolutionary. The

hem of the dresses rose to the middle of
the lace, which was a great deal for that
time, and the cut of the dresses moved
away from the idea of a corset, the
waist-gowns being the norm. Evening
dresses were opulent and fluid, and the
flapper, decadent, and extremely sexy
style offered men a new reason to sigh.

The 30s

The 1930s were a very glamorous

period, influenced by Hollywood
stars. The iconic dresses of the period
are white or silver satin, very decent in
front but with deep neckline at the back.

The 40s

In 1939 World War II began, which changed the fashion of

the 1940s. Completely give up the glamorous evening
gowns in favor of two-piece, comfortable and practical
costumes. All raw material was rationalized, being
reserved for the army, so women see themselves forced to
find ways to wear their old clothes for as long as
possible. The 4-button suit becomes uniform, while women
are forced to take the place of men left for war, working in
factories and agriculture.

The 50s

Cristian Dior creates one of the most iconic collections of all time,
New Look. The designer re-inserts the bodice, tightens the waist,
while the hips get bigger. New Look is a return to the traditional
model of the woman, but controversial, both for the use of the
bodice and the huge amount of materials used, at a time when the
world barely returned after the war. However, his mark on the
fashion of the '50s is obvious.

The 60s

The fashion of the 60s is dominated by young people. The corset is

dropped, the clothes are getting bigger and the youngsters start to
wear mini. The mature women continue to wear clothing in the '50s
style. The design and colors used are strongly influenced by Pop
Art, more and more artificial materials are used, costs are lower
and fashion becomes accessible.

The 70s

The 1970s are under the sign of

feminism. Fashion is heavily influenced by
music, being somewhere between the
bohemian style, the hippie generation, and
the glam dictated by disco music. Fashion is
diversifying, coexisting more styles at once,
but flip-flops are representative of
all. Wearing lycra, polyester, plastic, and
lots of kitsch. Jeans are worn by
everyone. In the 1970s, Vivienne Westwood
revolutionized British fashion as a pioneer
of punk.

The 1980s

The 1980s are experiencing new economic growth, and the United
States is becoming the epicenter of fashion. The model of a career
woman appears dressed in costumes with oversized shoulders,
seeking to be equal to men. The emphasis is on chromaticity and
opulence, everything is oversized: accentuated shoulders, very
wide skirts, strident colors, oversized earrings, busty sleeves, very
taped hair. Madonna is the fashion icon of the '80s.
The 90s

If fashion was influenced by

rock stars in the '70s, and in the' 80s
by TV series actresses, in the '90s
the models became new
celebrities. Even if there is a clear
stylistic pluralism, it is the decade
where the latest fashion trends are
felt. Music focuses on street
fashion: grunge or hip-hop style
dictates young people's clothing,
and Kate Moss is the new fashion
icon.

As early as 2000, we entered the Internet era. Interest in fashion is increased, but there is no
major current. Trends change from one season to another, fashion is interpreted and
reinterpreted, and online stores facilitate access to exclusive brands that until now have been
reserved for those who are privileged.
