Course This course is a general requirement (GER) for students at the University of the Gambia
Description: designed to introduce students to concepts of management and organizations.
Furthermore, the manner in which these concepts are applied in different
institutional/organizational setups is the focus of this course. The course critically
examines management and organizational practices and processes in relation to the
context of the contemporary business environment, locally and globally.
Course Upon successful completion of this course, the students will be able to:
Objectives:
• Explain the concepts of management and organization.
• Describe the management functions, roles, activities, skills, levels etc. and their
applications in today’s business environment, locally and globally.
• Demonstrate an understanding of organizational structures and processes.
• Critically examine the effects of the business environment on managers, locally
and globally
• Identify different leadership styles and their effects on organizational
performance
• Identify the stages in the decision making process
• Explain the concept of organizational behavior
• Describe corporate social responsibility
• Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of human resource management
• Identify the theories of motivation and their application in the organizational
context

Assignments and Projects
Each student will present an individual assignment, in addition to a group project;
whilst marks for the group projects are based on the group’s performances, special
consideration will be given to students according to their input in the project.
Free-riders will be penalized.
