Introduction
Novar’s second generation MINio is a redesigned, enhanced, form,
fit, and function version of Novar’s first generation MINio module.

Figure 1 MInIO

Novar’s second generation MINio is designed to be the most flexible

OPUS® control module to date. The MINio offers a variety of
input/output points that can be configured to meet a wide variety of
control applications. For example, by moving a jumper on the
circuit board, six of its eight inputs can be configured as 4mA-to-

sensor mode inputs. The software programmability of the MINio
has been refined to be as flexible and simple as possible.

Novar’s second generation MINio is fully backward compatible

with a first generation MINio as a replacement in a Logic One® or
OPUS® system.

This document provides instructions for mounting and wiring the

MINio, setting the MINio’s address, and checking the installation.

Hardware
Specifications
MINio Power Requirements
• The MINio is powered from an external, isolated, non-
grounded, 24VAC, 40VA, Class-2 transformer.
• The MINio is operational from 20VAC to 28VAC.
• The MINio operates correctly over an AC power frequency
range of 47 Hz to 63 Hz.
• The MINio does not exceed the UL Class 2 power rating.

Over-Voltage and Surge Protection

• All MINio I/O are designed to survive, without damage, the
continuous application of 28VAC and transients in excess
of 28VAC. Damage may occur to the unit if 28VAC is
exceeded for an extended length of time.

Wiring the MINio

CAUTION!
The following precautions should be taken during installation:

Observe all national and local electrical codes during

installation

Do not interconnect the outputs of different Class 2

circuits. Electrical shock or fire could result.

Do not use the MINio as a final safety device.

Wire all Class 2 circuits using Types CL3, CL3R, CL3P, or

equivalent conductors.

All outside connections to the MINio are made through use of five
and six-terminal, removable, Euro-style, 5mm connectors which are
arranged in groupings of universal inputs, digital inputs, analog
outputs, communications, power, and relay outputs for convenience
of installation. The connectors accept 12 AWG to 24 AWG solid or
stranded wires.

Wiring the MINio

Inputs
The MINio contains six universal inputs and two dedicated digital
inputs. Instructions for wiring the MINio are provided in the
following paragraphs.

Figure 3 Inputs and terminals

Universal Inputs
The universal inputs can be used with 4mA-to-20mA, 0V-to-10VDC, or resistance
sensors. Resistance mode may also be used for temperature sensing using a thermistor.
The input sensor may be a 2KΩ, 10KΩ (including Type II or Type III), 11KΩ, or 20KΩ
thermistor. The appropriate translation table for the thermistor in use must be entered in
Opus.
Thermistor selection for best performance:
• Novar refrigeration 2K, useable range -49 to 158F (-45 to 70C)
• PRECON Type 2, 10K, useable range 14 to 212F (-10 to 100C)
• PRECON Type 3 10K, useable range 14 to 212F (-10 to 100C)
• Custom Thermistor Table, accuracy = +/2% of resistance reading.

For each of the six universal inputs, a jumper must be configured properly on the board.
The inputs, located on the lower left side of the circuit board, each have four pins. The
universal inputs should be configured as follows to match the type of sensor being used.

Digital Inputs
There are two dedicated digital inputs on the MINio. Both inputs
provide 5mA of contact wetting current and share a common
ground terminal (see Figure 3 and Figure 4). The digital inputs can
be dry contact sensors, pulse meters, or momentary push buttons for
performing schedule timed overrides.

MINIO_INS 5/22/2012
For the latest technical documentation, visit www.novar.com/manuals 14
Part #737200000

CAUTION!
Both dedicated digital inputs are to be used with dry contact
only (no external voltage applied) digital inputs.

NOTE!
In the ESS32 software, these are MINio inputs 7 and 8.

The following procedure should be used to make the connections.

Table 15

Step Procedure
1 Connect the first digital input to terminals 19 and 20.
2 Connect the second digital input to terminals 20 and 21.

If pulse meters are used, they must not exceed 10Hz.

Timed Override Inputs

Timed overrides can be defined on any of the universal inputs or on
the two dedicated digital inputs. Each method requires different
wiring (see Figure 4); both can be used with Novar’s Universal
Override Panel.

• To use the universal inputs as timed override, two terminals

of the override panel (one push button) should be
connected to the source and input of the universal input.
The universal input should be configured as a 4mA-to-
20mA input.
• To use the dedicated digital input for timed override, the
two terminals from one of the override panel’s push buttons
should be connected to the input and ground of the
associated digital input.

NOTE!
When a MINio input is defined as a timed override, there is no
LED on the Novar Universal Override Panel push button.

Supplying the
MINio with Power
The MINio requires 24VAC power with a consumption rating of
10VA. The 24VAC should be connected to terminals 28 and 29 (see
Figure 3 and Figure 4).

Wiring the MINio

Outputs
The MINio contains six digital relay outputs and two analog 0V to
+10VDC outputs.
Digital Outputs
The relay outputs are Form C and use normally open or normally
closed contacts. The output relay contacts do not source any power.
The user must provide the source of power for the loads. Relay
contacts are rated up to 125VAC-240VAC, 125VA Pilot Duty;
30VDC/240VAC MAX 5A Resistive; 1/8 HP 125VAC, 1/3 HP
240VAC.

The output relays are on Terminals 30 through 47 (see Figure 3 and

Figure 4). Loads should be wired to the relays as necessary.

Analog Outputs
There are two analog outputs on the MINio. Both outputs source a
0V to +10VDC control signal with a maximum load current of
5mA. Both outputs share a common ground (see Figure 3 and
Figure 4 ).
Table 16

Step Procedure
1 Connect the first analog load to Terminals 22 (signal) and 23 (ground).
2 Connect the second analog load to Terminals 23 (ground) and 24 (signal).

Communications
The network communications cable (Belden 8761, Novar WIR-
1010, or equivalent) should be connected to Terminals 25 (A), 26
(shield), and 27 (B). To use the cable shield effectively, only ground
the communication cable shield conductor at one end, preferably at
the Opus XCM or Logic One Executive Controller end of the
network segment. Connect the shield to each device’s shield
terminal, which is not ground. See Figure 5 showing an XCM20
system.

Setting the
Address
The address switches are located at the top of the MINio. Address
switches 1 through 6 are used to configure the MINio’s address,
which must match the address assigned to it by the OPUS/ESS32
software. The address switches should be set as shown in Figure 9
to correspond to the software assignments.

Figure 9 Address switch settings

NOTE!
Set Switch #7 to the ON position to set the baud rate for 9600.
Do not change this unless there is some problem that requires
baud rate 1747 (Switch 7 = OFF). If this is the case, the baud
rate must also be changed in OPUS/ESS32 to match.

Switch 8 is currently reserved. Leave it set to the ON position.

Checking the
Installation
Once the MINio has been installed, the following light-emitting
diodes (LEDs) should be checked to ensure proper operation.

Power and Communication Status

Located at the top of the MINio near the address switch is the power
and communication status LED. When power is applied, the LED
will be on. When the MINio communicates with the executive
module, the LED will blink off during the module’s response.
