LATIN 375: LATIN PROSE COMPOSITION

Colebourn, Latin Sentence and Idiom

Objectives:

1. To acquire mastery of Latin by accurately constructing

grammatical Latin from complex English original prose
2. To practice transforming Latin sentences from one
grammatical structure to another
3. To practice composing Latin, imitating the style and
usage of Golden Age Latin.

Minnesota Standards:
This course fulfills the following teacher licensing rules
(Subpart 4) set by the Minnesota State Board of Teaching:

A3d(i): The teacher must accurately construct grammatical

Latin and Greek from a moderately complex English original.
In preparation for each class, students will practice
specific grammatical structures by translating from English into
Latin, using the exercises in the texts. Assignments will
alternate between Colebourn and Bradley’s Arnold, first
practicing the structure being studied using Colebourn’s fairly
easy exercises, the honing students’ skills with the more complex
material in Bradley’s Arnold.

A3d(ii): The teacher must transform sentences from one

grammatical structure to another.
Each class will begin with an analysis and correction of
students’ homework. Students will be asked to compare different
versions and suggest alternative ways of translating the
assignment. The class will conclude with introduction of the new
material for review and practice.

Your attainment of the goals of the course and your ability to
fulfill the standards for teaching that the course addresses will
be measured in the following ways:

Grading will be based on the quality of students’

translation exercises (turned in each day) and on a final exam
[standards A3d(i and ii)].
