Factors Influencing Time Usage Among USLS Varsity Athletes from 1st
Year to 4th Year for Academic Year 2013-2014
According to Marson (n.d), Athletes dedicate their time to succeed in sporting events while
striving to maintain successful academic grades in school. Most of the varsity students in the university
(National)
athletes had been a topic of discussion long time ago. Critics observed that participation in sports may
reduce the time available for studying and learning, since students-athletes were having difficulties in
managing their time between hectic schedules of sports training and requirements of academic subjects.
However, sports enthusiasts claimed that sports participation can motivate student-athletes to achieve
harder, raise scholastic ambition, can keep them attending school, can improve students’ academic
grades, develop awareness the benefits of good health, fitness and exercise, and understanding the
spirit of team work, sportsmanship and camaraderie. In addition, researches showed pieces of evidence
that student participating in sports and physical activities lead to developed mental and physical
alertness, mentally and physically alert students always improved their performances, accomplished
According to Ferrer (2018), Student-athletes are usually asked, “How do you balance your time
being a student-athlete? or How do you find time to study?”. The answers boil down to two things: time
management and priorities. A normal day for a student-athlete involves classes and training. Factor in
sleeping and eating, that should not take up 24 hours of your day. A student-athlete must also set
his/her priorities straight. So after spending time in the classroom and in a gym, would you choose to do
According to Henson (2013), To get by classes, student athletes usually enroll in programs that
require relatively less work. If they weren’t athletes, they would probably take up a different course,
something to prepare them for the future outside of sports. But because of the day-to-day demands on
a student athlete, he is often sidetracked to focus on the present and delay thinking of tomorrow. Only a
small percentage of student athletes advance to pursue a career in sports whether as competitors or
coaches or trainers. So a large majority finish school unprepared for a life beyond sports unless they re-
athletes have to manage physically and mentally. Not only do you somewhat carry the weight of the
entire university’s school spirit on a seasonal basis on your shoulders, you also have to keep your Grade
Point Average (GPA) up so that you’ll be eligible to play the game. This doesn’t include keeping up with
According to Mitchell (2018), Using a calendar or planner is an easy way to view all of your
commitments and deadlines in one space. These tools allow you to stay organized daily, weekly,
monthly and yearly. Seeing assignments and deadlines written down can help you to determine a study
schedule and decide which assignments are most urgent. Calendars and planners are one of the easiest
school, practices, games, etc. there just never seems to be enough time to fit everything in. Often,
school or sport, or both, take a hit when student-athletes try to juggle everything they have going
on and maintain a semblance of a social life. So how do some student-athletes make it work, while
others don’t? The key is time management, or as the quote above says, “priority management.”
According to Grimit (2014), Every athlete dreams of moving onto the professional level and
getting paid to play the game that they love, but in reality a majority of the 450,000 NCAA student
athletes will not continue onto the professional level. This is causing people to ponder if the sacrifice to
the academic progress of athletes is worth the energy to continue playing sports for four more years in
college.
