MEASURING TOOLS

TAPE MEASURE A tape measure or measuring tape is a

flexible ruler and used to measure distance. It consists of a
ribbon of cloth, plastic, fibre glass, or metal strip with linear-
measurement markings. It is a common measuring tool.

RULER are used for measuring a line, and the straight edge allows
them to be used for drawing, scoring, or cutting. They are often
used in technical drawing, math & geometry, engineering,
carpentry, and print fields

FRECH CURVE It is used in manual drafting to draw smooth

curves of varying radii. The shapes are segments of the Euler
spiral or clothoid curve. The curve is placed on the drawing
material, and a pencil, knife or other implement is traced
around its curves to produce the desired result.

CURVE STICK use to have accurate curve line in skirt

HEM GAUGE This is use to measure the correct hem of the cloth
CUTTING TOOLS

DRESSMAKING SHEARS Designed to cut/trim close to

the fabric while protecting it from damage, and used
for applique work and rug making. Adjustable, short-
bladed, heavy-duty scissors for opening button holes.
Dressmaker's shears have a long blade (typically 7–
10"), to facilitate cutting out fabric.

PINKING SHEARS are scissors, the blades of which are

sawtoothed instead of straight. They leave a zigzag pattern
instead of a straight edge. ... Pinking shears have a utilitarian
function for cutting woven cloth. Cloth edges that are unfinished
will easily fray, the weave becoming undone and threads pulling
out easily.

LIGHT TRIIMERS used for small cutting, this toolhas one point blunt to
prevent it from snagging

EMBROIDERY SCISS ORS are a special type scissors used to cut sewing
thread or multi-ply embroidery thread. They are specially designed
with long thin pointy tips to allow someone to cut threads in tight areas
accurately and with a clean sharp cut

BRENT-HANDLED SHEARS This premium quality, solid steel scissors is

extremely sharp and holds a tight cutting edge right to the end of
the pointed tips. It is computerized ground and provides the
sharpest and longest lasting cutting edge. The unique bent handle is
ergonomically effective for mitering corners and various other
cutting applications.
MARKING TOOLS

TAILOR’S CHALK A chalk-like material used for marking alterations

on fabric in tailoring and dressmaking. The marks are brushed or
washed off the material when no longer needed.

TRACING WHEEL The teeth can be either serrated or smooth. It is

used to transfer markings from sewing patterns onto fabric with or
without the use of tracing paper, and can be used to make slotted
perforations. Such markings might include pleats, darts,
buttonholes, notches or placement lines for appliques or pockets.

HERA MARKER works nicely when you make patchwork units that
will be sewn right away, such as quick pieced half square triangle
units and other similar tasks. A hera marker can also be used to
'finger press' a seam allowance to one side (instead of pressing
with an iron)

TRACING PAPER This is use with tracing wheel to transfer marks

from pattern to cloth.

SOFT PENCIL This is use in pattern construction.

SEWING TOOLS

NEEDLES used for hand-sewing, is a long slender tool with a

pointed tip at one end and a hole (or eye) at the other. The earliest
needles were made of bone or wood; modern needles are
manufactured from high carbon steel wire and are nickel- or 18K
gold-plated for corrosion resistance. High quality embroidery
needles are plated with two-thirds platinum and one-third titanium
alloy. Traditionally, needles have been kept in needle books or
needlecases which have become objects of adornment.[1] Sewing
needles may also be kept in an étui, a small box that held needles
and other items such as scissors, pencils and tweezers

PINS are used to hold fabric together prior to sewing. They

temporarily hold the fabric in place when attaching and
cutting patterns, or while sewing. They are best to use with a
machine because they are easy to remove quickly as
you sew.

PIN CUSION is a small, stuffed cushion, typically 3–5 cm (1.2–

2.0 in) across, which is used in sewing to store pins or
needles with their heads protruding to take hold of them
easily, collect them, and keep them organized.

THREAD The basic function of a thread is to deliver aesthetics

and performance in stitches and seams. Sewing thread is a
flexible, small diameter yarn or strand usually treated with a
surface coating, lubricant or both, intended to be used to
stitch one or more pieces of material or an object to a
material.

THIMBLE is a small hard pitted cup worn for protection on the

finger that pushes the needle in sewing. Usually, thimbles with a
closed top are used by dressmakers but special thimbles with an
opening at the end are used by tailors as this allows them to
manipulate the cloth more easily.
