A DECADE OF ENTITLEMENT
This month’s biggest news in our little Singaporean melting pot of
the automotive world has got to be the prices of COEs in nearly all
categories taking a tumble.
A couple of industry analysts did tell me that this could be
attributed to the actual slowing down of people buying new
vehicles – thanks to the stratospheric prices and also the fact that
we are approaching that golden age nearly ten years ago, when
COE prices was at an all-time low and nearly everyone was buying
a car.
Now that huge jump in COE quota is rising its head again as
there are many people who can’t afford to renew or buy a new car
to replace their soon-to-be decade old vehicle, they have no choice
but to scrap it and return the COE back into the mix. Hence, the
surge in COE quotas again. In turn this translates to lowered COE
prices.
All this could be fine and dandy, as long as the trend continues,
we might actually see COEs dropping back to 2007 levels once
more. Unfortunately, no sooner did the dip occur, and a mad rush
to buy cars again, the authorities announced that COE numbers
will be reined in again in the next bidding.
So what is exactly going to happen? COE prices are probably
going to head right back up, most of us holding onto our cars have
less than three to four years left are going to be in a bit of a bind.
Will the greater powers that be decide to reverse the COE quota
stance and flood the market once again? Or will we continue to
experience this awful drought that dries out entire showrooms and
not to mention wallets.
You might mention alternative forms of transport, but at the
current state, our public network of trains and buses can barely
cope with the high concentration of peak hour crowds converging
all at once – left alone close to another million former drivers if the
inevitable happens.
I had the fortunate opportunity to take the subway a couple of
weeks back to get to Suntec City to pick up a testdrive car. Not
having taken the train for nearly a decade, I was pre-warned by
friends to take it during the off-peak periods which usually stem
from around 10AM to 11AM.

To my surprise, the trains were still pretty packed (well at least
according to my standards), I’ve heard horror stories that people
have to wait for a couple of trains before they could even board.
So I would probably be counted lucky. The only thing that really
annoyed me was the need to change trains at various stations
with unclear instructions, I found myself frequently asking station
control managers exactly where I should be headed etc. In the end
I was late and had to walk the entire length of few stations simply
because I had no idea how to get to the next platform.
If this is the state of things to come, I would gladly stick to my
car anytime. Time will only tell if we all get our wishes answered,
and the opportunity to drive another ten more years or is it time
to ride a bicycle?

Some people may think driving a supercar is all about
being flashy and wanting to show off, but it really
is more than that. It is the driving pleasure that you
derive from the car – the way it looks, the way it drives
and most importantly, the way it makes you feel. At the moment I cannot
afford a supercar and probably will not be able to unless I miraculously
inherit some fortune from a long-lost rich relative or strike the lottery.
Hence, I treasure every opportunity I get with supercars. In this issue, I
get to spend a night with the McLaren MP4-12C. Not a brand new model,
but hey I’m not complaining – it is a million-dollar car after all.

Should I warm up my car on cold start-ups in the
mornings? I’ve been advised by various friends
most of whom are split into two camps, one
advocating the need for a few minutes of idling
just to let the car get up to normal operating
temperature, the other claiming that you can just
drive off immediately. Is it necessary to warm up
my car? Does doing so help or hurt my car? Does
doing so waste gas? - Winston Tan
Editor: Hi Winston, although a lot of people
might think warming up the car is best on cold
start-ups, doing so is a bad idea, and not just
because it wastes gas.
Cold engines typically need a rich (more
fuel) mixture to run well. More than likely, your
car uses electronic fuel injection. If your car’s
engine is cold, sensors relay that information
to a computer, which signals the fuel injectors
to stay open longer, allowing more fuel into the
engine to help it run while cold.
As the engine warms up, the computer signals
the injectors to let in less fuel and everything
returns to normal, so to speak. Importantly,
the faster your engine warms up, the quicker it
assumes its most efficient level of operation.

Modern cars are equipped with a multitude of devices to help
them run clean and efficiently, including a catalytic converter
(sometimes three of them), a device in the exhaust system that
works to oxidize unburned hydrocarbons and reduce carbon
monoxide and nitrogen oxide levels in the exhaust stream. A cold
engine emits a far higher percentage of unburned hydrocarbons
and much higher carbon monoxide levels than a warm engine.
Unfortunately, the average catalytic converter can’t process
100 percent of unburned hydrocarbons even in the best of times.
The catalytic converter needs high exhaust temperatures —
generally a minimum of 400 to 600 degrees Fahrenheit — just
to start functioning. Because of the catalytic reaction, the higher
the pollutant input, the higher the operating temperature of the
catalytic converter after it starts working, typically about 1,200 to
1,600 degrees.
Because a cold engine emits high levels of unburned
hydrocarbons, it can cause the converter to run hotter than
desired. If this occurs too often, these high temperatures can
cause the converter to physically collapse internally, or plug. This
doesn’t happen at once, but over time, yet the end effect is the
same: poor mileage and significantly dirtier exhaust.
There are a lot of myths concerning the risk of damage if you
don’t thoroughly warm up a cold engine, but most of them are
just that — myths. Modern engines are built to a much higher
standard than engines of 25 years ago
The best bet? Start your car, let it run for 30 to 60 seconds to
get all the fluids moving, then drive off gently. Don’t race the
engine or accelerate suddenly. Compared to idling in the parking
lot — where you get zero Km to the litre — your engine will
warm up faster, your exhaust system will get up to temperature
faster so the catalytic converter can do its thing, and you’ll use
less fuel.

The latest Range Rover is definitely the most
gallant SUV money can buy, but does a diesel lump
matches it’s classy image perfectly?

adies and gentlemen, meet the all-
new Range Rover. And you probably
knew that already: because this one
comes with a stylishly detailed face (check
out those headlamps and grill combo),
minimalist rear (the tail-lamps that look
like the number ‘7’ is oh-so-avant-garde)
and matching large 20-inch wheels are the
perfect shoes.
Let’s also not forget how, when viewed
from the side, the Range Rover here looks
properly proportionate; the front and rear
overhangs were stretched closer towards
the end of the car to allow more space for
the cabin.
Apart from that, here is the most
important fact of the Range Rover: this is
the turbo-diesel variant. Yes, you read that
right: diesel.
Thing is, diesels were not usually targeted
towards consumers in the high-end class –
after all, these group of buyers (in local
context especially) appreciate refinement
above anything else. And diesels were never

known to be, well, refined.
But Jaguar Land Rover obviously wanted
to prove otherwise. The same diesel lump
being offered in the Jaguar XJ diesel, yours
truly was promised class-leading refinement
and driving comfort with this diesel-
powered Range Rover TDV6.
Under the bonnet lies a 3.0-litre V6
turbo-diesel that is paired to an 8-speed
automatic transmission, allowing a power
output of 258bhp and - this is the best part -
a maximum torque of 600Nm available from
as low as 2,000rpm. Sounds like a whole
lot of fun, and perfect for outrunning pesky
hatchbacks and sports cars.
Oh and if you must - really, really must ask,
the Range Rover has a significant 160 Nm
more than a Porsche 911 Carrera 4S and an
equivalent figure to McLaren’s 12C. Sports car
in an SUV body-shell, you say? Well kinda…
That aside, here are the other important
numbers that you must know. It takes 7.9
seconds to do the century sprint, maxes out
at 210 km/h, weighs in at 2,160 kg and has

example) that bridge the massive gap between

Electrical mobility offers many challenges, but
also many opportunities for all: manufacturers,
cities and administrations. That was what was
discussed in Barcelona, a pioneering city in
innovation and electrical mobility, during the
meetings organized by BMW Group.
Julian Weber, responsible for Innovation
and E-Mobility Projects, offered the technical

a truck, unless I decide to take a Class 5 licence someday.

Games were played at each station to help
us learn more about the trucks, as opposed
to just feeding us information.
One of the stations was the test drive of
the FH and the FM trucks! I was excited to
try the trucks – these are trucks weighing
up to 100 tonnes. The FH trucks were Euro
5 SCR, either 13 or 16 litre diesel-powered,
with power output of 540bhp or 500bhp and
peak torque of 2,600Nm or 3,150Nm. The FM
trucks were powered by 11 or 13 litre Euro
4/5 SCR diesel engines of 450bhp or 500bhp
with torque of 2,150Nm or 2,600Nm.
One challenge in driving such big trucks is
the steering, which can strain your muscles as
you apply a lot of energy to turn the vehicle.
However, the Volvo Dynamic Steering (VDS)
system has made it a lot easier. I tried one
without the VDS and I had to hold onto the
steering wheel at all times, as well as put in
more effort to turn the vehicle.
With the VDS however, the truck became
more manageable. The VDS provides the
steering force needed so you can just
use one hand (or one finger even), giving
you more control. When you let go of the
wheel, the power steering turns the wheel

back to neutral. This really helps to take the
strain off your shoulders and neck.

improving fuel efficiency as a result.
On the makeshift track marked out in
cones, I took the trucks down long straights
and through turns. We were given a speed
limit of 20km/h but some of the instructors
allowed me some flexibility and I was driving
down the straight at almost 50km/h (grin),
before turning effortlessly thanks to the VDS.
Understanding that these heavy duty
vehicles are crucial to businesses and need
to have minimum downtime, Volvo’s unique
Dynafleet – an online Transport Information
System – allows you to view in real time the
current location of your vehicles, monitor
the fuel consumption, send messages
to the driver, track driver times, be made
aware of service intervals and more. This
reduces maintenance needs and avoids
unplanned stops by letting you see what
areas you can improve on. Workshops can
also remotely monitor component wear
and the vehicle’s overall condition via the
computer, calling the truck in only when
necessary, thus saving time for the driver
and fleet owner.
There was insufficient time to try the
FMX unfortunately, so I could not drive
the robust vehicle that is often used in
construction and mining. Well, at least I
got to drive the FH and FM. The new cab
is made more spacious and comfortable,
which is essential when for long journeys.
The driver gets a better seat and enhanced
visibility with a bigger window and new rear-
view mirror design. A better bed, integrated
parking cooler, new lighting and low noise
level means giving the driver better rest,
which is very important on the road.
I don’t know when or if I will ever get to
drive a truck again, but I now have renewed
respect for all truck drivers out there. It is a
huge responsibility to drive a big vehicle like
that all by yourself!|

CHILDREN ABOUT ROAD SAFETY
Accidents involving heavy-duty trucks and
little children never end pretty. Statistics from
the Singapore Traffic Police also show that 60
children were injured in road accidents and in
the same period last year 45 were hurt. The
rising number of accidents involving children
has led to the community stepping up efforts
to work with the authorities and get our
children home safely.
To prevent such tragedies from happening,
Volvo Trucks Singapore launched a road safety
campaign as part of their corporate social
responsibility. Young children are among the
most vulnerable road users and because of
their small size, drivers of large vehicles may
not notice them easily.
With the support of the Singapore Police
Force and the Singapore Road Safety

What you definitely need to try is black pork
barbeque, a native delicacy, from the black
pig that is a domestic breed found on Jeju.
There is even an entire street dedicated to
black pork in the city. Sliced thickly and grilled
over a charcoal fire, it does taste better than
the usual pork, and also has a stronger smell.
Jeju is also famous for Hallabong oranges,
Alive Museum large and sweet oranges with a unique shape.
These oranges can be found easily and

tourists are often seen buying boxes home.

Over three full days (the other two days
were most for travelling), I visited some of
the most popular nature attractions that you
must see if you ever go to Jeju.

MYSTERIOUS ROAD
The ‘Mysterious Road’ in Jeju, known as
Dokkaebi Road, is on a hill at the foot of
a mountain. Interestingly, when you drive
along that stretch of ‘mysterious road’, put
the car in neutral or even turn off the engine
if you want to, and watch the car roll uphill.
You can try doing it with a bottle and
watch it roll upwards instead of down. What
is happening? Well, this defiance of gravity
is actually an optical illusion. The road has Mysterious Road
a downhill gradient but because of its

seemingly high surroundings, it looks like an

uphill road.

YONGDUAM ROCK
The Yongduam Rock means Dragon Head
Dragon Head Rock
Rock, as evident from the shape of the
rock that you see on the coastline. To get
a better view of it, make your way down
the steep steps (with caution please) and
you can also get nice photos of the waves
crashing against the rocks below.

HALLIM PARK
Similar to our Botanical Gardens in Singapore,
Hallim Park is all flora and fauna, with sections
of Jeju history too. Over a space of about
1,000 square metres, there are nine different
areas you can explore, such as the bird
garden, water garden, flower garden, bonsai
garden and folk village.
Hallim Park is also famous for having
Hyeopjaegul and Ssangyonggul Caves,
touted as the only two-dimensional caves in
the world. These caves were formed when
Hallasan erupted and the cool temperatures
Korean food within the caves are maintained all year
round regardless of season.

Oedolgae Rock
SUWEOLBONG
Suweolbong is a popular spot for viewing
the sunset, but I went on a rainy mid-
afternoon so there was no spectacular
sunset to see. But, it serves as a good
vantage point for views of Chagwido,
a small group of uninhabited islands
Daeseom, Jisileeseom and Wado. In case
you have problems locating Suweolbong,
you can try searching for the Gosan
Weather Station which is right next to it.
SEONGSAN ILCHULBONG
Conversely, a good spot for catching the
sunrise is Seongsan Ilchulbong, aptly named
Sunrise Peak, which is an UNESCO Natural
World Heritage site. Standing at 180 metres
high, this tuff cone formed by hydrovolcanic

eruptions has a preserved bowl-like crater
only visible from aerial view.
You can take the stairs and climb to the
top (about 20 minutes) where there are
benches for you to rest and slowly absorb
the panoramic views. Should I return to
Jeju one day, I will make the effort to wake
up before sunrise and get to the top so I
can capture it. At the bottom, you can also
see performances by Haenyeo (Korean
women divers).
CHEONJIYEON FALLS
Don’t expect anything like the Niagara Falls.
Cheonjiyeon Falls is simple and tranquil. The
walk from the main gate to the falls is pretty
scenic, so you will probably keep stopping to Black Pork BBQ
take photos. Once you get to the falls, you

TIPS FOR DRIVING IN JEJU
It is not difficult to adjust to left-hand
driving, so don’t be afraid. The roads in Jeju
are generally wide with not much traffic.
In the cities of Jeju-si and Seogwipo-si
however, the lanes are narrower and traffic
becomes more congested. Watch out
for speed cameras mounted overhead
and also, there are flashing amber lights
at uncontrolled junctions which basically
mean to take caution. The rented cars we
had came with a locally-programmed GPS,
so instructions were clear. Before leaving
Singapore, please remember to get your
international driving permit from the AAS.
Jusangjeolli
JEJU ISLAND, KOREA
will find the air really fresh and clean. Take a
moment to sit there and take some photos of
yourself with the falls in the background.
OEDOLGAE ROCK
My favourite spot of the entire trip was
at the Oedolgae Rock. Not the rock itself,
but the views around it that are absolutely
stunning. Oedolgae Rock, translated
to mean Lonely Rock, is this lone rock
standing 20 metres above sea level by
itself, with a face on it if you look carefully.
Some might think there is nothing to
shout about the rock, but the scenery that
you find around it is mesmerising. Spend
a little more time there to walk to the
surrounding trails and you will find the cliffs
that I mentioned earlier.
JUSANGJEOLLI
Jusangjeolli are these columnar jointed cliffs,
which formed when Hallasan erupted and
its lava flowed into the sea of Jungmun. The
vertical pillars are shaped hexagonal, shoot
up to a height of 20 metres and run for 2km
along the Daepo coast. Isn’t nature just so
amazing? I was quite awed by this formation.
SANBANGSAN
Sanbangsan is a mountain located on the
southwest coast of Jeju. It has a very steep
gradient, hence looking almighty and fine.
According to legend, Sangbangsan is the
actual top of Hallasan but was thrown out
by angry Gods and landed where it is today,
thus there is a crater on the top of Hallasan.
Sanbangsan is also home to several Buddhist
temples, such as Sanbanggulsa and Bomunsa
Temple with the huge golden Buddha.

These were the nature spots that I visited
on this trip. There are a lot more that I
would have liked to go to, such as Hallasan,
the highest mountain in South Korea, and
Jeongbang Falls, the only waterfall in Asia
that flows directly into the ocean.
If you like your plants, you can go to
Spirited Garden, which is a bonsai garden.
If you are an arts person, the Glass Castle is
quite interesting. It is a glass art theme park
featuring exhibits that are entirely made out
of glass, from inside the halls to the mirror
lake and gardens outside.
To learn more about the history of Jeju,
you can go to a folk village and see how life
was like in the 19th century, with traditional
houses and folk items on display. Jungmun
Tourist Complex is another popular place
which has the Teddy Bear Museum and
Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum, and
also duty-free shopping.
Green tea lovers must definitely go to the
O’Sulloc Tea Museum, which is surrounded
by its own green tea fields. Besides buying
Sanbangsan their tea, or tea-derived facial products and
cosmetics, I highly recommend trying their

Before returning to Singapore, we made
a one-night stopover in Seoul to check
out the new Dongdaemun Design Plaza
(DDP) that officially inaugurated in March.
The distinctively neo-futuristic design of
this major urban development landmark
looks like a UFO that just landed in the
middle of Dongdaemun, one of Seoul’s
fashion hubs filled with street markets and
shopping malls. You can take a walk on its
roofs, browse the several global exhibition
spaces, check out the futuristic retail stores
or restored parts of the Seoul fortress.

Undeniably a picturesque place, Jeju gave

in the day, and some of the breathtaking
sights allowed me to get in touch with
nature. Sometimes, there are places you go
to once and you know it’s enough; but Jeju
is a place I want to return to someday. |

The BMW M5 “30 Jahre M5” (30 years
of the M5) will be produced in a limited
run of 300 examples vehicles worldwide.
Developing 441 kW/600 hp and peak torque
of 700 Nm, the new special-edition model
(fuel consumption combined: 9.9 l/100 km;
CO2 emissions combined: 231 g/km) is not
only the most powerful BMW M5 ever to
emerge from series production under the
auspices of BMW M GmbH, but also the
most powerful car in the history of the brand.
The “30 Jahre M5” sprints from 0-100

km/h (62 mph) in a lightning 3.9 seconds.
Its strikingly exclusive, BMW Individual-
inspired looks and numerous dynamics
and comfort-enhancing equipment details
make this special edition a highly desirable
collector’s item.
Under the bonnet of the BMW M5 “30
Jahre M5” is a 4.4-litre V8 engine with M
TwinPower Turbo technology whose output of
441 kW/600 hp exceeds that of the standard
model by 40 hp. This power boost has been
achieved through carefully calculated tweaks
to the engine management and an increase in
charge pressure.
The foundation for these upgrades was
provided by the Competition Package.
Conceived to appreciably enrich the handling
characteristics of the BMW M5, it can be
ordered as an option for the regular model
and is part of the special edition’s standard
specification. The Competition Package
comprises modifications including a revised
chassis set-up with firmer spring/damper
tuning and a 10-millimetre drop in ride height.
Added to which, the Active M Differential
on the final drive gains its own control unit
to further improve traction. Elsewhere,
the steering with M-specific Servotronic
function has more direct mapping. And the
M Dynamic Mode of the DSC (Dynamic
Stability Control) system is focused even
more keenly on delivering sporty handling.
The singular dynamic potency generated
by these performance-enhancing measures
makes the special-edition model a smile-
inducing proposition, a point hammered
home by its stunning 0-100 km/h (62 mph)
time of 3.9 seconds.
In keeping with the anniversary
celebrations which have inspired its
creation, the special-edition model has been
given the BMW Individual treatment. As a
result, it cuts an even more dynamic, head-
turning figure than its standard-specification
siblings. Much of the credit here goes to
the use of the striking BMW Individual paint
shade Frozen Dark Silver metallic.
This softly shimmering matt finish
accentuates the elegantly muscular forms
of the BMW M5 in particularly impressive
fashion. The kidney grille surround, gills with
“30 Jahre M5” badge on the front wing, door
handle inserts and twin exhaust tailpipes
all come in black chrome, adding subtle yet
effective accents to the car’s appearance. The
same is true of the 20-inch bi-colour M light-
alloy wheels with mixed tyres (front: 265/35
ZR 20, rear: 295/30 ZR 20).
Exclusive interior exudes understated
elegance and powerful dynamics. The

also focused squarely on celebrating the
model’s 30th anniversary.
For example, the driver and front passenger

BAD DRIVING HABITS

Singaporean drivers are known to be among the most As a driver who spends most of his
impatient, with a long list of bad habits – we list them down time on the roads every single day,
yours truly has had a fair share of bad
experiences too. Like you, there will never be
a day without incidents you wish you had the
special power to remove so that life would be
much, much easier and peaceful.
With a small land space mated to a rather
large car population, Singapore’s roads are
among the busiest in the world despite the
high cost involved just to get the right to drive.
And that causes impatience and silly antic, as
everyone is busy fighting for this right.
So what are they? We list the prominent
bad habits below…

NOT GIVING THE RIGHT OF WAY

TO OTHERS
The yellow boxes and ‘zebra’ crossings were
painted onto our roads for a sole reason: For
the former, so that vehicles from minor roads
can merge seamlessly into major roads. Then
for the latter, it is to allow pedestrians to safely
cross the road to get to the other side. Sadly
though, there will always be a selfish road
user who decide to wait on either, not giving
other drivers or pedestrian the chance.

TAILGATING
While you may be in a hurry at times due to
unforeseen circumstances, it does not give
you the reason to tailgate other road users. It
is no rocket science why you should do away
with this bad habit: in case you could not react
in time (due to the short distance between
you and the vehicle in front), a collision is
imminent. And that causes inconvenience
to both yourself and the other party. Oh,
and other road users too as you are delaying
them. Makes sense now?

NOT INDICATING
In case you have not notice, there is a
stalk behind your steering wheel called
‘the indicator’. If you do not know what is
its main function, ‘the indicator’ (or ‘signal
light’ in local speak) switches on the blinking
yellow lights on the front, side and rear part
of your car. And this informs other road
users around you where you intend to move
to: left or right. Contrary to urban beliefs,
the usage of ‘the indicator’ does not cause
your car’s fuse, battery or alternator to stop
functioning. So use it.

GESTURING AT OTHER
ROAD USERS
Cannot keep your cool? Then perhaps you
should consider quitting driving altogether. It
takes patience and understanding to share
the roads; if you think the road should solely
be yours, then we suggest you save up and
buy an island instead. You can make your own
rules and do not have to share the roads with
others that way. Stop spoiling other’s day.
SEE OTHERS SIGNAL - LET’S
CLOSE THE GAP!
Seeing the car ahead of you signaling, you
can choose to do two things: be a courteous
road user and allow the other party to get into
your lane, or be a real jerk by speeding up
and not giving the chance to others. Anyway,
by closing the gap you have just wasted
those precious petrol, because the sudden
acceleration and braking just caused your
engine to work hard. Get it?
STOPPING UNDER THE SHADE
AWAY FROM THE STOP LINE
Inventions like the window tint and air-
conditioner has allowed the automobile
cabin to remain cool. So… Is there a need
to inconvenient traffic flow by waiting under
the shade, away from the stop line? And oh,
what if the tree decides to fall on your car?
Ever thought of that?
ROAD-HOGGING
A classic bad habit that irk all drivers.
Sometimes when you encounter one, you
cannot help but wonder in amazement just
how ignorant people can be – the wing and
rear view mirrors in the road hogger’s car
are either invincible or merely an unused
accessory. Please, always check your
mirrors and ensure you are not holding up
traffic, particularly on the fastest lane. If you
want to take a leisurely drive, simply use
the second or third lane. Or just take a cab.
SLOWING DOWN
AT ACCIDENT SCENES
So there is an accident up ahead. It might
be a serious one or a minor fender bender
where the parties involved already moved
to the road shoulder. What do you do when
you reach the scene then? A normal person
would probably just take a glimpse and drive
on; a ridiculously curious (read: busybody)
individual will come to an almost complete
halt, assess and reconstruct the incident in
his mind, give commentary and then move.
At the same time affecting traffic behind…
STOPPING AND BLOCKING
TRAFFIC
Let’s get this right: the hazard light is not
a special pass that allows you to (1) stop
abruptly or (2) leave your vehicle unattended
by the side of the road. Especially, along a
busy stretch of road whereby your “it will
take just five minutes” affects the flow of
traffic. Be gracious and think of other road
users as well: leave your car at the car park,
not by the side of the road.
PARKING OUT OF YOUR LOT
‘Parking idiots’, that is what this special
group of drivers are called. They do not
bother to park properly within their parking

Not sure whether you have the Cashcard in
your car’s IU or not sure whether you have
enough card balance, eh? Do it before you
start driving!
USING THE MOBILE PHONE
Despite the authority’s warning of a hefty fine
if caught, Singaporean drivers remain brazen
and still use their mobile phone while driving.
A quick check revealed that a Bluetooth
earpiece does not cost an arm or a leg…|

SUPER-DRIVE
I know not everyone cares about driving a supercar, but
if you are a car enthusiast, it’s likely that a supercar is able
to impress you and chances are you would gladly take
the wheel of one if you could.
Before I drove a supercar of any
kind, I always admired how sexy
they look and sound. I knew I
might not be able to afford one in this
lifetime, but I always wished I would get the
chance to drive one.
The first supercar I drove was the Audi
R8, back in 2007. Some don’t consider it a
supercar, but I think it is. It was only after I
drove it then I realised why people pay insane
amounts for such cars. A shiver of pleasure
runs down your spine each time you start up
the car and feel the engine roar to life.
When you press on the accelerator pedal,
the car responds with a force so quick you
can’t help but smile (or smirk). Even just
looking at it when it’s parked quietly brings
this fuzzy feeling to your heart. Also, the
level of technology in supercars is well, a
level above the average sedan.
I’ve been very fortunate to have driven cars
like the Ferrari 458 Italia, Aston Martin V12
Vantage S, McLaren MP4-12C, Bentley Flying

Spur, Lamborghini Gallardo and Maserati
GranTurismo. Through driving events on
a makeshift track at Changi or at Sepang
International Circuit, I also got to push some
of these cars beyond its normal daily limits.
Driving a supercar has its perks and
definitely attracts attention, a lot of attention.
People stop, stare, point, whip out their
phones to take photos. This is something you
will probably get used to when you own one.
Admittedly, Singapore may not be the most
supercar-friendly place with its abundance of
traffic lights, speed limits, lack of long empty
straight roads and high costs of ownership,
but that does not stop those who can afford
it. It’s not about the symbol of status or the
showing off, but really the unbeatable driving
pleasure derived from driving a machine with
advanced technology.
An owner of several supercars, who
prefers to remain anonymous, once said to
me that buying an entry-level family sedan
in Singapore is equally not worthwhile, as
we do have a pretty comprehensive public
transportation system. Supercars are “a
technical tour-de-force” and ultimately it
goes down to one’s buying motivation.
Every supercar is genuinely unique in
styling and innovative in its own way. There
are many reasons for buying supercars,
but one that might not be apparent is the
personal driving enjoyment.
That is why I feel that you should drive a
supercar at least once in your life.
You cannot just take your friend’s
supercar out for a spin, unless he or she is
willing to risk the insurance. You may not
be able to afford one or you are not willing
to pay such exorbitant prices for a supercar
in Singapore. So how can you get the
chance then? You can rent one, but instead
of paying thousands to take it out for a
day or two, you can just pay hundreds to
experience a supercar.

once in your life. Rent one when you are
overseas, go for a supercar driving event,
beg a good friend to let you try it (ok maybe
not) or pay for a short joyride. The thrill
and pleasure of driving a supercar is not
something I can explain in words. You drive

A grand occasion it was, with president of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile
(FIA) Jean Todt coming to Singapore to officiate the opening of the new premises for
Automobile Association (AA) of Singapore.

The relocation from River Valley –
where AA Singapore has been for
a long time – to GB Point at Kallang
Bahru is necessary as the old premises were
no longer able to cater to the growing and
changing needs of its 83,000 over members
with ageing assets and building features.
“We saw the potential in this Kallang
Bahru location, being near to complementary
amenities such as food and retail options, and a
friendly neighbourhood. This location also gives
us a chance to be even closer to members.
More importantly, the new space gives us
opportunity to review our operational flow
and customer touch points, to better utilise
space, further develop our suite of services
and product offerings and stay relevant to
better serve members,” said Bernard Tay,
president of AA Singapore.
Operations started last November but
GB Point is only an interim location, as AA
Singapore continues to look for a permanent
location. The premises at GB Point will
undergo improvements and enhancements
to serve as a blueprint for the operational and
corporate design of the future permanent
location. It will also be used as a test bed
for new offerings like proactive on-ground
engagement of walk-in members and
paperless automated application processes.
300 guests, including corporate partners
and AA members, were present to witness
the opening. Important guests included
Colin Syn, deputy chairman of Singapore
GP; Tan Teng Lip, president of the Singapore
Motor Sport Association; Gerard Ee, former
president of AA Singapore; YM Tunku Datuk
Mudzaffar Tunku Mustapha, chairman of
AA Malaysia; and Tony Stuart, group CEO
of Australia’s National Roads and Motorists’
Association were present.
After the opening address by Tay and Todt,
there was a brief tour of the facilities for Todt
before a private media session. The 68-year-old
Frenchman was there for the opening of AA
Singapore’s new facility, but there was hope
that he would answer questions about issues
surrounding the new Formula One season.
He did take two questions on F1, but
reacted strongly when the third question
was still on the sport. He said rather firmly,
“I’m sorry but are we going to speak only
about Formula One? We are here hosted by
AA Singapore and I would prefer to speak
about that.”

He went to talk about the professionalism
and loyalty of Singaporeans, how FIA works
with different organisations in Singapore and
the advocating of road safety as part of FIA’s
Action for Road Safety global campaign.
The partnership between FIA and AA
Singapore has definitely benefited the
motoring community in Singapore. FIA
represents the motoring interests of 200
member associations in 120 countries, thus
providing a well-connected network for
the various associations to learn from and
leverage on.
“Each club is at different stages, so
the less developed ones can learn from
the more developed ones in terms of
road safety, facilities and reaching out to
members. For example, AA Singapore
organises international driving forums
where associations from other countries
come to Singapore and give talks on the
road safety in their respective countries.
This is important as we have Singaporeans
going over to these places to drive and
it will help to know about their culture,
regulations and terrain,” Tay added.
Tay is the first Asian to be elected to
the five-man FIA audit committee. Other
Singaporeans holding posts in FIA include
Tan (Teng Lip), who was elected in 2009 as a
member to decide on rules and regulations
for FIA’s various racing series from karting
to F1; race steward Nish Shetty who joined
the FIA’s International Court of Appeal in
2010; and (Colin) Syn who is on the executive
committee of the FIA Institute for Motor Sport
Safety since 2011.|

It was a jubilant atmosphere, filled
with non-stop toasting, fun and laughter.
The event was opened by a thrilling
magic performance by the multi-talented
illusionist, Joe Yu. There were series of
music and dance performances during that
night. There was also a fascinating and sexy
belly dance number by a group known as
Belly Dance Extravengza.
The final performance for the night was
by an ‘Anita Mui’ Impersonator who won
the audience over by his uncanny ability to
mimic the songstress’ hottest songs. An
interaction session with games thrown in
for good measure between the audience
made everyone burst into laughter.
Into the night, there was lucky draw
game for three lucky winners to walk away
with Capital Land shopping vouchers. The
dealers’ award dinner ended with a prize
presentation to the top dealer’s that sold
the most tyres and a massive toasting
event whereby all the top management
staff of YHI and special invited guests from
Yokohama Rubber Company to go on stage.
All of them raised their glasses up,
toasting to all the dealers, for their year of
excellent sales and achievement, constant
support to YHI wishing them for another
year of continuous growth on sales and
success for the year ahead.|

BMW Motorsport will not only field eight BMW M4 DTMs
in the 2014 DTM season, but is also represented by a new
lead car, based on the production model of the BMW
M4: the BMW M4 Coupé DTM Safety Car will lead the 23
DTM racing cars around the circuits on the race calendar
safely and with great aplomb.

The new BMW M4 Coupé
(combined fuel consumption:
8.8-8.3 l/100 km; combined CO2
emissions: 204–194 g/km) will make its
debut as a safety car at the race at the
Nürburgring (DE) on 17th August 2014. The
BMW M4 Coupé combines motorsport
genes and road capability in a highly-
emotional and balanced general concept.
The completely new, 431-hp six-cylinder
inline engine with M TwinPower Turbo
technology and high-rev characteristics
generates a maximum torque of 550 newton
metres over a wide range of speeds. This
allows the BMW M4 Coupé to accelerate
from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.1 seconds.
“Having decided to start the 2014 DTM
season with a new challenger, in the form
of the BMW M4 DTM, it was a logical step
to have BMW M GmbH put together a
BMW M4 Coupé DTM Safety Car,” said
BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt.
“To lead the DTM field out in style, the
safety car itself must also be extremely
sporty. The BMW M4 Coupé certainly
provided us with the basis to achieve this.”
To safely guide 23 DTM racing cars
around a circuit, the safety car itself
must demonstrate ultimate sportiness.
A powerful drive train, high-performance
chassis and perfect handling in any weather
conditions are an absolute must.
As it happens, the BMW M4 Coupé with
its many BMW M Performance parts is
naturally at its strongest in precisely these
areas – and is light-footed thanks to its
BMW M4 DTM SAFETY CAR
intelligent lightweight design. The BMW
M4 Coupé DTM Safety Car’s power is
generated by the six-cylinder inline engine
with M TwinPower Turbo technology and
high-rev characteristics.
Back in the winter of 2013 a team of
BMW M employees started work on
converting the car from what was already a
mightily impressive, roadgoing coupé to a
safety car capable of taking a leading role in
the DTM. The basic car was assembled at
the BMW plant in Munich.
From there, the BMW M4 Coupé went
to the BMW M factory in Garching, where
the assembly and modifications continued
by hand. These included the technicians
removing the rear seat of the car and
installing a roll cage and Recaro racing seats
with Schroth belts for its outings as a safety
car. Furthermore, the car was also equipped
with LED lights on the front apron, a radio
communication system, LED lights on the
roof and a special livery.
On top of all this came the extensive
use of BMW M Performance Parts – from
the exhaust silencer system, front splitter,
black front grille, mirror caps, rocker
panel attachment and rear spoiler to the
rear diffuser, the technicians prepared
the BMW M4 Coupé for its demanding
outings on the racetrack.
The modifications took about two months

of its new Stamford Tyres Commercial Centre in Jurong,
reinforcing its status as Singapore’s largest independent tyre
and wheel distributor.
Mr Wee Kok Wah, President of Stamford
Tyres Corporation Limited said, “With
the opening of the Commercial Centre,
Stamford Tyres will be able to support the
Group’s international exports of proprietary
brand tyres and wheels to countries such
as Russia, United Kingdom, United Arab
Emirates, Canada, Ecuador, and Tanzania.
This will certainly benefit the local dealers
who will now enjoy greater flexibility in
distributing a mix of different types of
tyres according to their customers’ needs.

In comparison, the previous warehouse
offered limited storage capabilities. The
redeveloped warehouse optimises land use
for our tyre and wheel distribution, truck
centre and retread plant operations.
In addition, the new warehouse serves as
a mixing centre to support the international
proprietary brand tyre and wheel distribution
operations of the Group. This enables us to
shift our mixing warehouse from China to
be consolidated in Singapore, allowing us to
leverage on Singapore’s strategic advantage
as an international entreport.”
With a gross floor area of 22,591 sqm.,
the Stamford Tyres Commercial Centre also
incorporates the Jurong Truck Centre (JTC)
which is able to accommodate 6 service
bays for trucks and 8 loading/unloading

container bays. This will expedite the
operational process greatly.
Installed with the highest double-deep
racking (12.5m) in Singapore, Stamford Tyres
can now store over a million tyres of all sizes
(600,000 tyres in this new Commercial Centre
and 400,000 tyres at its existing premises).
Its total pallet space can hold 45,000 pallets.
This new Commercial Centre will provide
value-added sales and just-in-time distribution
support to its network of overseas offices and
export customers.
Currently, the Stamford Tyres distribution
centres spans more than 10 countries
worldwide mainly in South East Asia,
Australia, India and Africa. Its export
network for proprietary brand tyres and
wheels spans more than 90 countries
including Eastern Europe, Western Europe,
Africa, Latin America and the Middle East.
The JTC which has 6 truck service
bays and 1 wheel alignment bay, provides
comprehensive tyres services which include
tyre change and repair, tyre wheel balancing,
truck wheel alignment and retread services. In
addition to providing 10 units of 24/7 Mobile
Tyre Recovery service, it also offers an array
of premium truck tyre brands.
These brands include Falken, Continental,
Toyo and Sumo Firenza (Stamford Tyres’
proprietary brand). Singapore Port of
Authority (PSA), SMRT (public bus
operator), Colex (waste management) and
SBS Transit (public bus operator) are some
of the centre’s customers.
The centre offers a Total Tyre
Management Program which includes
long term tyre leasing contract to large end
users. Called the 3 life tyre value users
can enjoy 1 new tyre and 2 retreads. JTC
has also extended services to mining
companies across borders to offer Total
Tyre Management services on-site.
The commercial centre also offers a
Conti Tread Program, a collaboration with
Continental, which provides similar life-
support to a brand new tyre. Apart from
its re-treading capability of 1,700 tyres per
month, Stamford Tyres also helps to recycle

tread, this helps to suppress energy loss and
improves comfort.
Thanks to its Asymmetrical tread pattern,
the inner side of the tyre includes sipes on the

of rehabilitation from injury.

a quicker and more effective method. Whole
body cryotherapy is a luxurious method to
speed up recovery after intense workouts,
based on a similar concept to ice baths.
Standing in a chamber the size of a
shower cubicle, vapourised liquid nitrogen
is released and the body is then exposed
to extreme temperatures as low as -200
degrees Celsius, with the skin surface
cooled to – 1 degree Celsius. The process
lasts no longer than three minutes and it
places the body in a pseudo emergency
state, tricking it into thinking that it is at risk
of freezing.
Formula 1 driver Mark Webber broke his leg
in a cycling accident at the end of 2008 and
had to speed up his recovery in time for the
2009 tests in Jerez in February. As part of his

recovery, he underwent full body cryotherapy
where he went into the chamber at -50°C for
30 seconds and then at -130°C for another
three minutes. It helped him tremendously
sped up his recovery.
The term cryotherapy refers to the local or
general use of low temperatures in medical
therapy, but the first whole body cryotherapy
unit was only created in 1970 in Japan.
Reacting to signs of hypothermia, maximum
efficiency of body functions is stimulated,
triggering a process of muscle regeneration
and immune-system stimulation, and also
releasing hormones like endorphins to aid pain
relief and quicker recovery.
After the treatment, the body is circulating
blood rich in oxygen, enzymes and nutrients,
bringing benefits in health, fitness and
aesthetics. Basal metabolic rate is also
raised and the body is said to burn an extra
800 to 1,000 calories in a single session,
thus boosting fat loss.
Other world-class athletes who have used
whole body cryotherapy include Read Madrid
star Cristiano Ronaldo, Olympic champion
sprinter Usain Bolt, European Footballer of
the Year 2013 Franck Ribery, Italian soccer
champions Juventus and NBA Champions
Dallas Mavericks. Hollywood stars like Daniel
Craig and Demi Moore have also used it.

Day commenced bright and early with
the arrival of the diligent organisers at
first light. Thereafter, eager participants
streaming in to the Grid were directed
to park their cars at designated lots,
much like the deck of an Aircraft
Carrier to facilitate their subsequent
launch and recovery.
During the check-in process,
participants were introduced to some
unique new initiatives implemented
by DriveRite. Participants were
delighted with their personal
“Report Card” that upped the instant
gratification factor by enabling them
to receive their individual timings
right at the finish line. Participants
also appreciated DriveRite’s effort to
“Go Green” by adopting re-usable
magnetic Car Numbers that were
a breeze to apply, re-position and
remove from their cars.
After completing the preliminaries
for the event and final preparations
for their cars, participants were
treated to a hearty buffet breakfast
that powered them well beyond the
next buffet lunch break.
The event proper was kicked off
by a thorough drivers’ briefing on
the day’s proceedings by DriveRite’s
Event Manager Darion Lim. Before
the on-course action started for each
new pattern, participants were given
an opportunity to walk the course to

required drivers to manoeuvre
their cars in, out, or around them.

the courses could be completed
within an average of 40-50 seconds.
As the day progressed, so did
the complexity of the courses. The
demands on the drivers increased,

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton took his fourth consecutive victory and gave himself a three-
point lead over fellow team mate Nico Rosberg after a thrilling battle in the final minutes of the
Spanish Grand Prix.

to the faster mediums just to gain an
edge over one another.
Immediately, Hamilton’s lead
began to decrease as the Brit
struggled on the harder compound
and its tendency to grain more than
the medium. A lead of 4.8s on the
46th lap was steadily reduced - it fell
to 4.6s, 3.6s, 3.7s, 3.1s, 2.3s and
2.0s over the six ensuing laps before
he found a better way to preserve
his tyres and reopened it to 2.7s by
the 54th lap.
Rosberg was relentless in pursuit
however, and charged once more.
By the 56th lap Hamilton's lead was
back down to 2.1s, then 1.8s, 1.4s
and 0.9s, before Hamilton gained
precious breathing space by opening
it back up to 1.3s by the 60th.
Still Rosberg kept coming, and

With three laps to go it was 0.9s,
then 0.7s. They went into their final
lap separated by only 0.6s, nose to
tail, with everything to play for and

so did Rosberg.
Through Turn 1 Hamilton kept it
together, then through Turn 3, and
gradually Rosberg's hopes faded.
He needed, he admitted, just one
more lap to launch an attack. To
the relief of the entire Mercedes
crew, including overall boss Dieter
Zetsche, both of the Silvers Arrows
made it across the finish line intact,
still separated by those six-tenths
of a second. It was their fourth
consecutive one-two finish.
And what a crushing
demonstration it was for the Anglo-
German cars. Daniel Ricciardo
figured third place was the best

beat Ericsson home. The Swede's
team mate Kamui Kobayashi was
the other retirement after his second
brake failure of the season.
Hamilton now has 100 points to
Rosberg's 97, with Alonso third on 49.
Vettel is fourth on 45, with Ricciardo
directly behind him on 39. In the
constructors' stakes, Mercedes pull
further ahead with 197 to Red Bull's
84, while Ferrari move ahead of Force
India, with 66 to 57, and Williams
