About the Workshop
over 4000 welding professionals and 300 industries as
India is a major manufacturing hub because of the relatively
low cost of production, thus resulting in our manufacturing
sector going global. The structured liberalisation of the
Indian economy, which has paved the way for globalisation
of our industry, has had its impact on core sectors
such as power, steel, oil, gas, petro-chemical and
transportation. Hence, there is an imperative need for the
manufacturers to maximise profits without compromising
on quality and by lowering manufacturing time and costs.
Since welding is the most widely used engineering
manufacturing process, the welding industry is also poised
for a vibrant change due to the need to introduce high
productivity welding processes, cost effective designs and
reliable quality control methods.
Choice of appropriate welding process becomes necessary
to ensure quality welds. Factors like appropriate heat input
and interpass temperatures, pre and post weld heat
treatment temperatures, choice of appropriate welding
consumables etc decide the quality of the weld produced.
An understanding the welding metallurgy of the material,
which involves the chemical, mechanical, and physical
properties of metals, is an essential ingredient in choosing
the appropriate welding process. Welding engineers
involved in design, fabrication or inspection of components
for petrochemical, power, nuclear, and other industries
would agree that a proper understanding of welding
processes and metallurgy for the successful execution of
the job is necessary. Unfortunately, most of the welding
engineers in industry are those who have not gained in-
depth knowledge on these aspects during their graduation.
The knowledge gained from experience is often insufficient
to make appropriate decision. It is not uncommon that
wrong decisions taken without proper understanding of the
welding concepts results in significant losses, delays or cost
overrun both in execution of projects and during the
operation of plant and equipments. To address this issue, a
Workshop on Welding Processes and Metallurgy (WPM) is
being organised for welding, inspection and quality control
engineers, technologists and managers involved in design,
procurement, welding, fabrication and inspection,
researchers and academicians, during 31 January and 01
February, 2019, at Alpha City, Navalur, OMR, Chennai.
About the Organisers
Industrial Training and Consultancy Services (ITCS)
ITCS has been started by Dr. Hasan Shaikh, a senior scientist
retired from Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research,
Kalpakkam. Dr. Hasan Shaikh has been actively involved in
welding and corrosion research during his tenure at
Kalpakkam. He is an Immediate Past Vice President of the
Indian Institute of Welding. ITCS was created to address the
issue of employability of engineering students in
manufacturing and research activities of industries engaged
in power generation, nuclear, space and defence
technologies, oil and gas, chemical and petrochemical,
manufacturing and other industries. ITCS trains and certifies
students pursuing their degree or diploma to meet the
employability skills required by these industries.

The Indian Institute of Welding, Chennai Branch
The Indian Institute of Welding is a professional body
devoted to the promotion and advancement of welding
science and technology in India. Established in 1966, with
its registered office at Kolkata, it has thirteen branches and
corporate members.
IIW India is involved in human resources development in
Welding in India by carrying out training and certification of
engineers and welders in India in line with international
standards; technology diffusion to the Industry and to the
welding community through seminars, workshops, training
programmes etc.; encouraging Research & Development in
welding; and establishing international standards of quality
for the Indian fabrication industry. IIW India conducts
associate membership examination, and publishes technical
journals and periodicals in the field of welding.
IIW India is a member of the International Institute of
Welding. It has its own Authorised National Body through
which it conducts international certification programmes,
such as IWE, IWT, IWS & IWP, of the International Institute
of Welding. IIW-India has obtained accreditation as
Authorised National Body for Company Certification
(ANBCC) from the International Institute of Welding
through its International Authorisation Board (IAB) for the
exclusive rights within India to operate its Manufacturers
Certification Scheme (MCS) for certification of companies
for compliance to the requirements of ISO 3834. IIW India
has its own National Welding Training and Certification
Scheme (NWTCS ), which has been prepared to meet the
demand of industry for welders, trained and certified to a
level of competency commensurate with the requirements
of any of the welder qualification and certification
standards or codes. IIW India is also closely associated with
Prime Minister’s Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) of National
Skill Development Council (NSDC) and Modular Employable
Scheme (MES) of Directorate General of Training (DGT)
under Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship
of Government of India.
