1 An RTD forms one arm of a callender griffith bridge circuit. The RTD is used to measure
a constant temperature, with the bridge operated in a balanced mode. The RTD has a
resistance of 25 Ω at a temperature of 0°C, and a thermal coefficient of resistance, α=
0.003925 per °C The value of the variable resistance R must be set to 37Ω to balance the
bridge circuit. Determine the temperature of the RTD.
2 A thermistor is placed in a 100°C environment, and its resistance measured as 20,000 Ω.
The material constant, β, for this thermistor is 3650 °C. If the thermistor is then used to
measure a particular temperature, and its resistance is measured as 500Ω, determine the
thermistor temperature.
3 Define and discuss the following terms related to thermocouple circuits:
a. Thermocouple junction
b. Thermocouple laws
c. Reference junction
d. Peltier effect
e. Seebeck coefficient.
4 The thermocouple circuit represents a J-type thermocouple with the reference junction
having T2=0°C. The output emf is 13.777 mV. What is the temperature of the measuring
junction, T1?
5 The J type thermocouple placed in ice bath yields an output voltage of 7.947 mV. What is
the temperature of the measuring junction?
6 The ice bath that maintains the reference junction temperature melts, allowing the reference
junction to reach a temperature of 25°C. If the measuring junction remains at the same
temperature as of question 5, what voltage would be measured by the potentiometer?
7 A J-type thermocouple referenced to 70°F has a measured output emf of 2.878 mV. What
is the temperature of the measuring junction?
8. You are employed as a heating, ventilating, and air conditioning engineer. Your task is to
decide where in a residence to place a thermostat, and how it is to be mounted on the wall.

A thermostat contains a bimetallic temperature measuring device that serves as the sensor
for the control logic of the heating and air conditioning system for the house. Consider the
heating season. When the temperature of the sensor falls 1 °C below the set-point
temperature of the thermostat, the furnace is activated; when the temperature rises 1 °C
above the set point, the furnace is turned off. Discuss where the thermostat should be placed
in the house, what factors could cause the temperature of the sensor in the thermostat to be
different from the air temperature, and possible causes of discomfort for the occupants of
the house. How does the thermal capacitance of the temperature sensor affect the operation
of the thermostat? Why are thermostats typically set 5°C higher in the air conditioning
season?
9. A T-type thermocouple referenced to 0°C is used to measure the temperature of boiling
water. What is the emf of this circuit at 100°C?
10. Flexivity, k, is a property of bimetallic strips that if known allows the radius of curvature
𝑑
to be calculated directly as: 𝑟𝑐 = where T2 is the temperature of interest, T1
2𝑘(𝑇2 −𝑇1 )
is the assembly temperature of the bimetallic strip, and rc is infinite. If a 3-cm strip is
assembled at 25°C, plot the shape of the strip at temperatures of 50°C, 60°C, 70°C, 85°C
and 100°C for a k value of 7.3 ∗ 10−5 𝐾 −1
