1. Objective
a. The Biomedical Technology Wing of Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for
Medical Sciences & Technology (SCTIMST),Thiruvananthapuram is
dedicated to the goal of building a culturally diverse and pluralistic
faculty committed to Product Development, Research & Teaching
and is in search of highly qualified and well proven Scientists,
Engineers, Technologists, and Medical personnel possessing
consistently good academic record with clear potential for high
quality R&D work, at different levels - in the following broad areas:
(a) Biomedical Engineering & Technology
(b) Biomaterials and Artificial Organs
(c) Biocompatibility
(d) Molecular biology & diagnostics
(e) Tissue Engineering
(f) Drug delivery technologies
(g) Product development, scale-up and commercialisation
(h) Testing & Quality management systems

2. About the Institute
Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences & Technology
(SCTIMST), Thiruvananthapuram is an Institute of National Importance
established by an Act of the Indian Parliament and under the
administrative control of the Department of Science and Technology,
Government of India.
The Institute signifies the convergence of Medical Sciences and
Technology and its mission is to enable the indigenous growth of

biomedical technology, besides demonstrating high standards of patient
care in medical specialties and evolving postgraduate training programs. It
has a hospital for tertiary care of cardiovascular and neurological diseases,
and research programmes in the areas of basic and applied medical
sciences, a Biomedical Technology Wing with facilities and research
programmes for developing medical devices from a conceptual stage to
commercialization, and The Achutha Menon Centre for Health Science
Studies for training and research in public health.
The Institute has the status of a University and offers Postdoctoral,
Doctoral and Postgraduate courses in Medical Specialties, Public Health,
Nursing, Basic & Biomaterial Sciences, Biomedical Engineering and Health
Care Technology. Students for these programmes are selected through a
National level competitive evaluation process.

4. Job description and Posts
Depending upon the eligibility, candidates can be placed in one of the
following levels with the assigned responsibility.
a. Scientist/Engineer D
These are middle level positions and are responsible for:
 Planning and developing independent R & D programmes in
Research / Product Development / Testing and related activities.
 Developing viable technologies, which will complement / aid
Institute’s approved programs
b. Scientist/Engineer B & C
These are entry level positions and are responsible for:
 Providing support in generating novel and worthwhile ideas and
interacting with other groups in association with Senior
Scientists of the Institute.
 Conducting active research and contributing to the ongoing R &
D programmes in Research /Product Development / Testing and
related activates
5. Qualification, Experience, Age limit & Emoluments
Qualifications with minimum First class (or equivalent) throughout from
reputed institutions & relevant experience, is essential for all positions.

o Emoluments: Rs.53240(consolidated) +
Rs.1600(Consolidated Annual Increment)

M.Tech/M.S (Engg) / M.VSc/ M.Pharm or equivalent
Degree + 6 Years experience
Or
MDS/ MD/MS (medical) + 4 Years
Or
PhD + 3 Years experience
o Age below 45 years
o Emoluments: Rs.79800(consolidated) + Rs.2400
(Consolidated Annual Increment)
 Based on merit, highly deserving candidates may be given up to
5 advance annual increases.
6. Review of application & selection
a. First phase:
Initial screening is done in consistence with the advertised basic
qualifications, area of specialization, experience and age limit. The
assessment is based primarily on research aptitude, scholarly
productivity, teaching ability and ability to be a conscientious
member who will fit in with the Department’s/ Institute’s priorities.
If the rating is satisfactory, move on to the next phase.

b. Second Phase:
(a) Seminar
 Based on the previous research experience and skills
 Future research plans/goals
(b) Seminar in absentia, can be conducted for candidates with
a valid reason for being unable to present in person with
the help of internet programmes such SKYPE, Google talk
etc. or with the help of specific video conferencing
programmes such as WebEx etc. Candidate has to send a
PowerPoint presentation (15-20 slides) of his research
activities well in advance, through email. The presentation
of about 30 minutes is carried out at a mutually agreed
time, in the presence of committee members and
concerned faculty.
c. Third phase
(a) Interview
Candidates have to appear in person for an interview
7. How to apply
a. Application can be submitted throughout the year in the prescribed
format given in the Annexure and is also available in

b. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
c. Those not selected, are eligible to reapply only after one year.

9. Further continued employment
Selected Candidates with consistent high performance during their
tenure at SCTIMST, and found suitable by the Senior Staff Selection
Committee of the Institute, have the opportunity to continue
employment as regular Academic Staff of SCTIMST.

The Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology
inherited its name from the last Maharaja of Travancore, His Highness
Sir Sree Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma – with the gift of whom the
Institute had its origin.
Our Hospital Wing campus is located at the Medical College area, while
Biomedical Technology Wing is at Poojappura, about 10 kms East, in a
picturesque 27-acred campus around the century old Satelmond
Palace, the former residence of Her Highness Maharani Sethu Lakshmi
Bayi - the Regent Maharani of Travancore during 1924-’31. Both the
campuses are within the city. There are many prominent scientific
institutions like Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Rajiv Gandhi
Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB), Indian Institute of Space Science &
Technology (IIST), National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and
Technology (NIIST), Indian Institute of Science Education and
Research (IISER), Tropical Botanic Garden & Research Institute
(TBGRI) etc. in the neighborhood and some enchanting picnic spots
and historic monuments in and around the city.
12. Time schedule for selection (from the date of receipt of
