• HP Officejet Enterprise Color X555/MFP X585
• HP PageWide Enterprise Color 556/MFP 586

Possible Causes

NOTE: This issue will often be accompanied by a “61.10.01” error on the control panel and in the error log.
• Worm gear out of place, loose, or missing
• Print bar assembly stuck
• Failing print bar lift motor

Required tools
• Flat screwdriver
• Torx #8
• Torx #10

Before performing service

• Turn the printer power off.
• Disconnect the power cable.
WARNING: To avoid damage to the printer, turn the printer off, wait 30 seconds, and then
remove the power cable before attempting to service the printer.
• Have HP Part # D3Q24-67076 available.

After performing service

Connect the power cable.
Turn the printer power on.
Reinstall the Output Bin.
Reinstall the output tray in the printer.

1
Replace the print bar lift motor

Replace the print bar lift motor following these instructions:

1. Remove the output tray from the printer.

2. On the rear cover, remove one screw (callout 1) and remove one thumbscrew (callout 2). Pull the
cover to the right and remove it.

2
3. Remove the Ink Collection Unit (ICU).

ICU

4. Remove 2 screws from the left rear cover.

3
5. Remove the cover by sliding the cover up and then rotating the cover away.

6. Locate the print bar motor in the back of the printer in the upper right corner.

4
7. Remove the white FFC form the Print bar lift motor PCA.

8. Locate the encoder assembly and carefully remove the white locking piece with a small, flat
screwdriver.

CAUTION: Be careful to hold the white piece with your other hand while you release the snap so that
it does not drop down into the printer below.

5
9. Place the white FFC cable in the black holder to have free access to the print bar lift motor area.

10. Locate the gear train assembly and remove three screws (do not mix the screws with others).

6
11. Remove the gear train assembly.

12. Remove 2 Screws to release or loosen the print bar motor assembly (save the screws and make sure
not to mix them).

7
13. Grab the Print bar lift motor PCA and the encoder gear simultaneously and release the encoder gear.

NOTE: DO NOT REMOVE ANY OTHER PARTS ON THE SYSTEM. REMOVE ONLY SPECIFIED PARTS AND FOLLOW
THE STEPS IN THE ORDER PRESENTED. OTHERWISE THE PRINT BAR LIFT MOTOR MIGHT NOT BE INSTALLED
CORRECTLY.

14. Remove the white power connector (red and black wires) carefully using a small flat screwdriver.

8
15. Incline the lift motor and remove the two screws underneath.

CAUTION: Be careful not to pull hard on the motor during these steps, which could release the black
FFC at the top of the small PCA and make reassembly more difficult.

16. After the screws are removed, release the print bar lift motor and the black worm gear.

9
17. Unpack the new print bar lift motor from the box and remove the 2 screws to release it from the PCA
assembly.

10
18. Discard the main PCA and use only the motor, the white plastic bracket, and the screws.

19. Discard the failing motor and install the new motor.
IMPORTANT: Use the new screws to reinstall the print bar lift motor and the white plastic bracket.

11
20. Put the new motor on the print bar lift motor bracket that is still attached to the printer.

21. After the motor is in place, insert the white bracket to reinforce the worm gear. Make sure the two
small tabs at the top/front of the bracket are locked onto the sheet metal bracket.

12
22. Align the white bracket with the screw holes in the motor and metal frame. You will probably have to
rotate the motor slightly to get the screw holes to align.

23. Insert 2 screws on the motor (the same screws used to remove the new motor and bracket from the
service assembly).

13
24. Before placing the motor back, first make sure the transparent plastic protector is in place. If it is
dislodged, rotate the part and hook the hole in the top over the metal tab as shown.

Replace the Clutch Gear Assembly

1. Locate the Clutch Gear Assembly.

14
2. Remove 1 Screw using the Torx #8 Driver.

3. Locate the spring and remove it.

4. Remove the gear.

5. Grab the new gear and new spring.

15
6. Install the new gear.

7. Use a tool (screwdriver, plyers, etc.) to snap the new spring in.

8. Screw the metallic cap with the Torx # 8 Screwdriver.

16
Reassemble the printer

After the print bar lift motor Clutch spring and gear are installed, follow these steps to reassemble the printer.

1. Reinstall the print bar lift motor assembly and the encoder gear assembly at the same time and
make sure the encoder disk is inserted in the encoder sensor. The easiest way to do this is to
rotate the bottom of the motor assembly back (to the left), push the encoder/gear assembly on to
the metal shaft until it aligns with the slot in the black encoder sensor, and then rotate the bottom
of the motor assembly back to the right so that the disc fits into the slot. Then finish pushing both
assemblies back against the metal wall behind. You might also have to wiggle the encoder/gear
assembly very slightly to get the gear teeth to mesh, so that the encoder will slide back correctly.

17
2. Reconnect the red and black power cable.

3. Press the white locking piece back onto in the encoder assembly shaft. It should snap into place.

18
4. After the motor is inserted on the metal frame and the encoder in the right position, replace 2 screws
to secure the print bar lift motor assembly. Make sure to NOT use the screw hole on the right side of
the motor bracket.

5. Locate the 3 holes and reinsert the gear train.

19
6. Reinstall the three screws.

7. Reinsert the white FFC cable carefully and make sure is properly connected.

20
8. Replace the left rear cover and the ICU.
9. Close the left door.
10. Reinstall the rear cover.
11. Power on and test the printer.
