Ethics in the Workplace

As we grow as human beings we get taught and learn what is considered acceptable and

unacceptable actions in many different situations. Our main source of ethics and the development of it

come from out parents and our religion. We grow up learning how to act and what you parents and your

religion teaches is right and wrong actions. People are born to know a good action from a bad one and

can justify the bad actions is whatever manner they wish. Most people know when they are doing

something that is hurting another individual. An example of this is just straight up not telling the truth.

This avoids danger for you temporarily but can hurt you and others in the long run. A situation where

ethics and morals may be used is in the hiring process. First, the decision on what is acceptable

behavior. You can decide to hire someone who smokes or not hire that person. Any action for that

matter that someone does can give you a reason to not hire someone based on what you think or know

to be right or wrong. This can be a challenge to your beliefs because you might be wrongly

discriminatory to the potential employee.

Ethics can affect an organization in a huge way. In the example given the man who told his

company to lie made a poor ethical decision. His own morals and justification cost many other people

their jobs and probably caused people to look at him and question his beliefs. I would never work for

someone who wants me to lie. One major example that correlates with my job is paying invoices.

Sometimes you may call a client and ask for payment and they will lie and say that they sent the check.

This, in my opinion is wrong of them, but they are justifying their decision based on their morals. I must

read through their lies and make a decision as to whether or not we keep them as a client.
