along the main railway lines in Italy: Milan-Rome-Naples
and Turin-Milan-Venice routes that run respectively
from North to South and from West to East of the country,
and the link between Milan and Genoa harbour.
Italy’s High Speed/High Capacity system extends over 1,000 km
and it has been designed to the most advanced technological
standards with speeds of not less than 300 km/h.
The new lines carry mixed traffic comprising
passenger and freight traffic and are being closely integrated
with the conventional railway network.

Development and Modernisation of the Syrian Railway Network

Italferr has provided Technical Assistance for the development

and modernization of the Syrian railway network
aimed at integrating links connecting the Mediterranean sea
with the developing regions of the Middle East.

In particular, as regards the Damascus-Daraa railway line,

Italferr has worked on the conceptual design
for the building of a High Speed rail line (250 km/h)
of approximately 110 km intended
for mixed passenger/freight traffic.
Seven stations are planned and the Daraa station
includes a locomotive maintenance facility.

Italferr provided the detailed design

of the Sbena freight depot
and a rolling stock maintenance area.
In addition, Italferr designed the Kadem
Station, Damascus’ main passenger station,
and the sidings between Sbena Freight
Station and Kadem Passenger Station,
which extend for approximately 6 km.

Motorways of the Sea

Italferr has performed for the European Commission the transport study
called the Motorways of the Sea for the Black Sea and Caspian Sea.
The project involves the development and promotion of sea motorways
in the Caspian and Black Sea areas,
including the infrastructures connecting them
with land-based networks.
Specifically, Italferr is in charge of the study
on modernising the railway lines
dedicated to Caspian and Black Sea ports,
an infrastructure project
which is indispensable in the light
of increasing freight movement by ship.
The study involves analysis
of the existing transport infrastructures
in a vast region stretching from Ukraine
to the Caucasus and from Turkey to Central Asia.
Among the main objectives of the project
is that of identifying modernisation works
which can develop the potential
of an infrastructure network
to support intermodal transport in the area,
thus attracting international investments
aimed at infrastructure growth to improve
the flow of goods between Europe and the East.
The project takes on special importance
from the point of view of financing
eco-compatible transport systems
such as the motorways of the sea.

Having developed the final civil engineering design

for the El Palito-La Encrucijada route and pre-design of the infrastructure
and railway works on the Moron-Puerto Cabello intermodal link (27 km),
Italferr is completing the final design for the stations
and intermodal terminal on the El Palito-La Encrucijada line.
The El Palito-La Encrucijada route
is part of the development plan
for a more complex multi-modal freight
and passenger transport system
to integrate the different requirements
and modes of transport by creation
of logistics centres and terminals
both rail (dry ports)
and maritime (terminal and container),
to interact with road transport.
The line will link the country’s main port
(Puerto Cabello) with the big industrial
and agro-food centres of Valencia and Maracay.

Strategic Study for the High Speed Rail Network

AUSTRALIA 2011
on the East Coast of Australia

A U S T R A L I A
Strategic Study for the High Speed Rail Network on the East Coast of Australia

The study focuses on the introduction of a high speed rail service

linking the main cities of the East Coast of Australia.
The Newcastle to Sydney spine is a central section of this corridor,
but options for links northwards to Brisbane and southwards
to Canberra and Melbourne are also to be considered.
Another focus of the study is the identification of possible routes,
corridor preservation and station options, including city-centre,
city-periphery and airport stations,
thus providing a basis for route development,
indicative transit times and high-level construction costs.
Italferr’s role is mainly aimed at verifying the study assumptions
and solutions in respect of High Speed rail definition.
