ITA runs Accelerated Credit Enrolment in Industry Training (ACE IT)

Get a head start on technical training for an apprenticeship program while


still in secondary school.

You will attend a trades training class at the Squamish Nation Trades
Centre, Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s post-secondary institution
partner.

Receive credits which count toward your secondary school diploma in


addition to one level of technical training for your industry training program.
What is a Foundations
Course?
You will earn hours toward Level 1
certification in three trades: plumbing,
sprinkler fitting and steam/pipefitting.
What is a
Plumber-Pipefitter-Sprinklerfitter?
The Piping Trades consist of Plumbing, Steamfitting, and Sprinklerfitting. Each trade is
unique and provides journeypeople with different opportunities for careers within the
construction industry.

Plumbers: The work of a Plumber consists of studying building plans, measuring, cutting, threading,
bending and soldering pipes, assembling and installing valve fittings and installing underground storm,
sanitary and water piping systems. Plumbers work in all areas of construction, including; residential,
commercial, institutional and industrial.

Pipefitters: The work of a Pipefittter consists of laying out, assembling, fabricating, maintaining and
repairing piping systems, which carry water, steam, chemicals or fuel used in heating, cooling, lubricating
and other processes. Pipefitters work in pulp mills, oil refineries, LNG facilities and shipyards.

Sprinklerfitters: The work of a Sprinklerfitter consists of the knowledge and ability to install all types of fi re
protection systems, including the layout and installation. A Sprinklerfitter is able to read blue prints,
understand codes and layout and install hangers and overhead piping in all types of buildings and all types
of construction. Fire sprinklers are installed in high-rises, warehouses, shopping centers, schools and
hotels.

To be successful in their trade, Plumbers,
Pipefitters and Sprinklerfitters need to be:
- physically fit & able to lift heavy pipes
- critical thinkers/problem solvers
- good and clear communicators
- able to work in confined spaces
- able to work out-of-doors regardless of weather
- able to work well with others towards a common goal
- willing to learn
- able to do very precise work, expertly
- able to have a mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity
Upon Completion of Piping
Trades Foundation
• continue on in the trades at a post
secondary institute such at KPU

• find a qualified red seal journeyman to


complete on the job training to receive
your apprenticeship
Grading
• An overall GPA of 70 percent or better
is required. All courses must be passed
in order to successfully complete the
program.
September 2016 - June 2017 *
Semester 1
At Sutherland full time or take courses
through online through Distance Learning
• Complete BC Ministry of Education mandatory courses

Semester 2
On site full time
• At Squamish Nation Trade Centre for training under
the authority of KPU
• You are responsible for transportation to the facility

Who you can work for
As a Pipefitter or Steamfitter, you could work within resource-based
industries, such as forestry and mining, oil and gas and
shipbuilding, or with construction companies. You could also start
your own business.

Cost
Tuition is paid by the school district.

All other costs are the responsibility of the


student/parent/guardian. These costs may
include textbooks, safety gear,
transportation and tools.
