Writing 2

Portfolio Cover Letter

Since the beginning of my education, every teacher I’ve ever had has always said the same

thing about English writing and language arts in general. I was always an average student when

it came to those subjects. Especially when it came down to writing. Since starting class in

Writing 2 I believe my knowledge of writing has improved and expanded to areas that I feel

were necessary to improve my own writing. Not only do I feel more at ease with my writing

capabilities but also, I feel like I learned more things that I didn’t expect to know from the class.

In the beginning of the quarter I felt like my writing skills only grew in certain areas since

finishing Writing 1. I was a little unsure what to expect from this class except for a bigger work

load but sure enough I ended up enjoying the class and I got along with my peers as well.

Starting off with Writing Project 1 I felt kind of at ease with the prompt. I knew what to talk

about, but I have always struggled to get the main idea across the entire essay and the structuring

of an essay has never been my strong suit either when it came down to it. As WP1 stands right

now in its finished form I believe it is the best I can do so far. From top to bottom I double

checked for any grammatical changes that needed to be made as well as making the paper sound

more formal. Aside from the comments left by my instructor I also added more to each

paragraph and changed my hook in the introduction to a more suitable and attracting hook.

With Writing Project 3, I felt just as confident with the prompt and I liked it even more so

since I had the chance to do some creative writing with the genre translations. I believe this
creative writing is my strongest skill ability in writing since I like to picture things in different

perspectives. I think WP3 was the one project I needed to edit the most. In this Writing Project I

not only added a few grammatical errors, but I also added more content to each paragraph and

changed my introduction to have a solid argument. As I went from paragraph to paragraph, I

made sure that each one can relate to my introduction in some way.

Whenever I look at a prompt now, I know I should always start by asking questions about

it that might help me get a better understanding and how I should approach this essay, or writing

project, and what resources I should use in order to complete it. Then I brain storm ideas on what

topics should I argue about throughout the paper. After gathering all my ideas, I bullet point an

outline of what I want to talk about in the essay and section by section start writing down the

content needed in the right area of the essay. These are all things I wouldn’t do before this class

and I strongly believe this has helped me evolve as a writer. When given a writing task, I

approach each task with my own opinion in the subject of the task and whether I can agree or

disagree with it. I believe this helps me develop an argument for the task and thus maintain a

solid stance when arguing about it.

As I see it now this experience of being in Writing 2 has been one to definitely remember

for the better. I now understand my own writing a little better and even if I may not be a talented

writer. I know I completed every project and every assignment to the best of my ability as a

writer. One of the things I always considered to be completely useful to me is the active

participation that we would have when having an open discussion in the classroom and having

all my classmates participate and place their own opinions about the subject at hand.

When it comes to my personal and current stance in “writing”. I believe that I am in no way

or form a writer at heart and I don’t think I ever will be. I may be able to get through essays and
exercises in writing classes but at the end of the day If I had to choose, I wouldn’t want to write

like this again. My educational strengths and skills are in different subjects. Not in English,

language arts, or writing. It’s not that I hate writing I am just no good at formal writing. It is

simply not my forte. Creative writing, I can do but anything beyond that I personally wouldn’t

want to try again or keep doing. Just like, reading the journals that were provided throughout the

class I feel as if the concepts in which the authors would talk about didn’t exactly help me write

better. Just understand the concepts better. I think what really helped me evolve my writing skills

was the constant exercises we would do during class and the different aspects of writing that

came along with them.

One final thought that is still lingering in me. I still am not sure on the entire concept of

writing structure. I don’t entirely understand it just what I do wrong when writing an essay and

the biggest feedback I get is the writing structure. Maybe with more experience or more thorough

research on what is the element of structure is will help me understand my personal writing skills

as whole once I have achieved this.
