sent to us.” She did not want to remind him of what his
reaction had been.
“I saw a vision,” Haman said, lifting his head from the
ground.
“What?”
“The Great One came to me and spoke to me. He told
me that He was the Father of us all, that His Son would
come into the world as the Nephites have been telling us
for many years. He told me that Abish would be the one
to convert my brothers and all my family and all our vil-
lage and even our kingdom to the truth. He told me that
I must protect her, for she was called to this from before
her birth.”
Now Timah stared at her husband. She had never
expected that he would have a vision, but this was an
answer to her prayer to the Great One. She had heard
nothing about the Nephites, but as her husband spoke, she
felt a return of that warm shivering feeling she’d felt at the
name she’d given her daughter. Perhaps the Nephite one
God was not so far from her old belief in the Great One.
“That is good,” she said. “That is also what I believe.”
And as she spoke it, she realized it was true. How was it so
easy to accept what should have been heresy? If either she
or Haman spoke these words outside of this room, they
would be killed for treachery to the Lamanite king, as was
anyone who preached Nephite doctrines of God.
“We must not speak of this until the right time. We must
wait for Abish to understand who she is,” Haman said,
looking deeply into his wife’s eyes. There was a plea for for-
giveness in there, but it seemed unimportant compared to
all else that had come to them.
Timah reached for his hand. “We will keep her safe,”
she said. “No matter what your brothers say.”
