Getting Started with Power BI

 In Module 1, you learn how to access and install Power BI Desktop. Optionally, you can use Excel
2013 Professional Plus or Excel 2016 Professional Plus. There’s nothing else to install!

 In Module 7, you learn how to access and install Power BI Gateway – Personal if you need to refresh
Power BI by using data sources on your computer or company network.

 The materials.zip file contains the following folders:

o getting-started-power-bi

 getting-started-power-bi-m3/After: This folder contains a Power BI Desktop file and


an Excel file that include all of the work performed in Modules 2 and 3 to get and
transform data. You can use this file to review the final state of the data model to
compare with your own file if you choose to follow along with the demonstrations.

 getting-started-power-bi-m5/Before: This folder contains a Power BI Desktop file


and an Excel file (just as in getting-started-power-bi-m3/After) that represent the data
model just before the model enhancements are applied in Modules 4 and 5. You can
use this file to start following along with the demonstrations in Module 4 if you
skipped the work in previous modules.

 getting-started-power-bi-m5/After: This folder contains a Power BI Desktop file and


an Excel file that include all of the work performed in all modules to get and
transform data and enhance it with calculations and more. You can use this file to
review the final state of the data model to compare with your own file if you choose
to follow along with the demonstrations.

 getting-started-power-bi-m6/Before: This folder contains a Power BI Desktop file


and an Excel file that represent the data model just before the visualizations are
added in Module 6. You can use this file to start following along with the
demonstrations in Module 6 if you skipped the work in previous modules.

 getting-started-power-bi-m6/After: This folder contains a Power BI Desktop file and


an Excel file that include all of the work performed in all modules to get and
transform data, enhance it with calculations and more, and add visualizations. You
can use this file to review the final state of the data model to compare with your own
file if you choose to follow along with the demonstrations.
 getting-started-power-bi-m7/Before: This folder contains a Power BI Desktop file
and two Excel files (identical in content, but different in name) that represent the
completed data model that you can upload to the Power BI service if you skipped the
work in previous modules.

o getting-started-power-bi-data: This folder contains a variety of files used as data sources for
the data model in Modules 2 and 3. The Web URL file contains a link to an online source, but
if you have issues with Internet connectivity, you can use the zipdata file instead as described
in Module 2.
