parallel to River Sutlej
and joins at Gorsian
Kadar Baksh.

 Perennial freshwater
source and gets
polluted in Ludhiana.

 water used for

irrigation near
Ferozpur.

 Carries treated/untreated industrial wastewater of Ludhiana city.

 UNTREATED WASTE FROM INDUSTRIES
 Electroplating hosiery, steel rolling mills and dyeing industries.
 Most of the industries are disposing their untreated industrial effluent in the nala as they have either not
installed effluent treatment plants and if installed these are not functioning properly.
 In 2015 report , in Haibowal Dairy Complex.
550 dairies having 25,000 cattle.
The estimated discharge from Dairies into Buddha Nallah was about 15 MLD.

GROUND WATER DEPLETION and SOIL DEPLETION

 The water of Budha Nala is highly toxic having high concentration of heavy metals like
nickel, chromium and zinc in addition to dyes numerous other organic and and inorganic
compounds.
 The farmers are using this water for irrigation purpose, thus degrading soil.

DISEASES.
 The application of such water for irrigation will result in the uptake of pollutants by plants
thereby reaching man and animals through the food chain.
 Disease like cholera, hepatitis, and specially cancer are the result.

FLOOD
 Due to the overflowing of this canal in the monsoon season, flood was faced by village
bugga khurd in 2018 where almost 10 acre paddy crops destroyed.

FISHES VANISHED.
IN 1961 the canal was home for fishes but by the time all disappearded due to increase in toxic
substances in canal.

BUDDHA NAALA : PROJECT FOR TRANSFORMING NAALA TO DARIYA AGAIN

Many rejuvenation projects for buddha naala is proposed but due to lack of seriousness by govt
officials, the state of buddha naala is same.

As per news by times of india on February 2018, NEERI, national environmental engineering
research institute is going to change the face of current scenario of naala .
