St. Oscar Romero / San Oscar Romero

On February 3, 2015, Pope Francis declared Archbishop Oscar Romero a martyr of the

Church, and recently, on October 14, 2018, the Pope canonized Archbishop Oscar

Romero.

El 3 de febrero de 2015, el Papa Francisco declaró al Arzobispo Óscar Romero

mártir de la Iglesia, y recientemente, el 14 de octubre de 2018, el Papa canonizó al

Arzobispo Oscar Romero.

Last year in August, a group of professors from General Theological Seminary (GTS)

visited the chapel, La Divina Providencia, the place where Oscar Romero was

assassinated on March 24, 1980.

I recall saying to the group visiting the place: This is the chapel where Archbishop Oscar

Romero of the Americas was killed, and a nun there corrected me by saying: “No, the

Saint of the world.”

El año pasado, en agosto, un grupo de profesores de el Seminario Teológico

General (siglas en inglés GTS) visitó la capilla, La Divina Providencia, el lugar

donde Arzobispo Oscar Romero fue asesinado el 24 de marzo de 1980.

Recuerdo haberle dicho al grupo que visitaba el lugar: esta es la capilla donde

mataron al Arzobispo Óscar Romero de las Américas, y allí me corrigió una

monja diciendo: "No, el santo del mundo".

Indeed, St. Oscar Romero has touched many people all around the world.

First, as the defender of the poor. Second, as defender of human rights, and third as

man of God declaring the Word of God.

De hecho, San Oscar Romero ha tocado a muchas personas en todo el mundo.

Primero, como defensor de los pobres. Segundo, como defensor de los derechos

humanos, y tercero como hombre de Dios declarando la Palabra de Dios.

St. Romero was a prophetic voice speaking truth to power.

Thus, becoming a martyr of the Church.

San Romero fue la voz profética que hablaba la verdad ante el poder.

Así, convirtiéndose en un mártir de la Iglesia.

In his book entitled Theology of Christian Martyrdom,

the Rev. Dr. Juan Vicente Chopin, states that Oscar “Romero was killed for his love of

justice and his deep love for the weakest. His defense of human rights is not simply

inscribed in a social or humanitarian conscience, but rather in his eminently evangelical

posture” (pg. 374).

En su libro titulado Teología del martirio cristiano,

el reverendo Dr. Juan Vicente Chopin, dice que Oscar “Romero fue asesinado por

su amor a la justicia y su profundo amor por los más débiles. Su defensa de los

derechos humanos no está simplemente inscrita en una conciencia social o

humanitaria, sino más bien en su postura eminentemente evangélica” (pág. 374).

To speak about St. Oscar Romero means to speak about El Salvador.

Just to make a point, in the recent presidential elections campaign in El Salvador, the

candidate of ARENA, Mr. Carlos Calleja put to the question the reports made by the

United Nations Truth Commission, the Inter-American Commission on Humans Rights,

and the finding of the Vatican that accused the founder of the ARENA party, Roberto

d’Aubuisson, as the intellectual architect of the assassination of St. Oscar Romero.

Hablar de San Oscar Romero significa hablar de El Salvador.

Solo para señalar un punto, en la reciente campaña electoral presidencial en El

Salvador, el candidato de ARENA, el señor Carlos Calleja, cuestionó los informes

de la Comisión de la Verdad de las Naciones Unidas, la Comisión Interamericana

de Derechos Humanos y la conclusion del Vaticano que acusó al fundador del

partido ARENA, Roberto d'Aubuisson, como el arquitecto intelectual del

asesinato de San Oscar Romero.

It appears that the canonization of Archbishop Oscar Romero did not sit well with some

members of the right-wing party ARENA in El Salvador.

Note that the ARENA party lost its bid for the presidency of the country.

Parece que la canonización del Arzobispo Oscar Romero no se sentó bien con

algunos miembros del partido de derecha ARENA en El Salvador.

Note que el partido ARENA perdió su candidatura a la presidencia del país.

The reality in El Salvador has not changed significantly since Archbishop Oscar

Romero’s assassination in 1980. Currently, there is a Social War in which poor people

are being displaced, robbed, and assassinated.

La realidad en El Salvador no ha cambiado significativamente desde la muerte del

Arzobispo Oscar Romero en 1980. Actualmente, hay una Guerra Social en la que

personas pobres están siendo desplazadas, robadas y asesinadas.

St. Oscar Romero’s voice is still needed today to accompany the poor and

marginalized. His voice is pertinent today:

Todavía se necesita la voz de San Oscar Romero para acompañar a los pobres y

marginados. Su voz es pertinentes hoy:

Brothers, you are from our own people, you kill your own peasant brothers and before
an order to kill that a man gives, the Law of God must prevail that says: DO NOT KILL
... No soldier is obliged to obey an order against the Law of God ... An immoral law,
nobody has to fulfill it ... It is time for you to recover your conscience and to obey your
conscience rather than the order of sin ... The Church, defender of the rights of God, of
the Law of God, of human dignity, of the person, can not remain silent before so much
abomination. We want the Government to take seriously that the reforms are useless if
they are dyed with so much blood ... In the name of God, then, and in the name of this
suffering people whose cries rise to the heavens every day more tumultuous, I ask you,
I beg you, I order you in the name of God: Stop the repression ...!

Hermanos, son de nuestro mismo pueblo, matan a sus mismos hermanos

campesinos y ante una orden de matar que dé un hombre, debe de prevalecer la

Ley de Dios que dice: NO MATAR… Ningún soldado está obligado a obedecer

una orden contra la Ley de Dios… Una ley inmoral, nadie tiene que cumplirla… Ya

es tiempo de que recuperen su conciencia y que obedezcan antes a su

conciencia que a la orden del pecado… La Iglesia, defensora de los derechos de

Dios, de la Ley de Dios, de la dignidad humana, de la persona, no puede

quedarse callada ante tanta abominación. Queremos que el Gobierno tome en

serio que de nada sirven las reformas si van teñidas con tanta sangre… En

nombre de Dios, pues, y en nombre de este sufrido pueblo cuyos lamentos suben

hasta el cielo cada día más tumultuosos, les suplico, les ruego, les ordeno en

nombre de Dios: ¡Cese la represión…!

Before his death, Romero is believed to have said to the Mexican newspaper Excelsior:
“I have often been threatened with death. I must tell you, as a Christian, I do not believe
in a death without resurrection. If am killed, I shall arise again in the Salvadoran
people...

Antes de su muerte, se cree que Romero dijo al periódico mexicano Excelsior:

“Muchas veces me han amenazado de muerte. Debo decirles que, como cristiano,

no creo en una muerte sin resurrección. Si me matan, resucitaré en el pueblo

salvadoreño ...

Brothers and sisters, St. Oscar Romero is a Christian example for us to follow to

emulate Jesus.

Hermanos y hermanas, San Oscar Romero es un ejemplo que podemos seguir

para emular a Jesús. Amen.
