Turkey

Around 8000 years ago the country now recognized as Turkey, was home to one of the

first groups of people. The region was influenced by that powerful empire for centuries. Later on,

when the Romans invaded the region, they captured the Byzantine Empire. Then, in AD 1000,

a group of people from Central Asia, called the seljuks, came and invaded the area. Finally, in

1920, the area became the established nation we know today, Turkey.

Around three fourths of the inhabitants are Ethnic Turks. Surprisingly the Kurds are the

largest ethnic group in Turkey and make up 20% of the population. Their cookings are similar,

their houses are similar, and their religion is similar. The rural Turks are very traditional wile the

Urban middle class Turks are similar to the European middle class. The Turkish people like to

cook with olives, vegetables, bread, and yogurt. Most of the Turks are Muslims.

Turkey’s government and natural resources have done much to form the country that it is

now. Their government became a Democracy in the 1920s. Unlike America, they have a

President and Prime Minister who share executive power in the National Assembly, in the

Turk’s legislature. Even though their main religion Islam, religion and government do not mix.

If the Turks decided to trade with Europe than they would benefit greatly. They are also very rich

in natural resources including oil, coal, and iron ore. Their natural resources improves their

economy.
