Dear Mr Manikanthan,

1. pl correct wherever required based on your turbine configuration as given below .

I understand your turbine consists of one HP cylinder and another IP cum LP cylinder which means all
are single flow . Is it correct ?

brg no.1 – HP(<-) – brg no.2 – brg no.3(??) – IP(->) – LP(->??) - brg no.3/4 – brg no.4/5 – Generator –
brg no.5/6

Pl correct direction of steam flow for each cylinder

2. Brg no.2 is journal-cum-thrust brg as per details given by you .

3. No separate brg exists for IP(brg no.3) . pl confirm .

4. One of the important factors which was not mentioned in your discussion was – whether any balancing
drum arrangement provided with HP steam connected on one side and vacuum on other side of
balancing drum/disc .

5. Another important factor is “total axial float / clearance in thrust bearing” – can you find out the value
from your turbine drgs / manuals . This should be around 0.3 to 0.6mm .

6. What is the method of measurement of axial shift – there should be a separate collar on rotor , very
close to thrust brg housing , by side of which proximity probes may be mounted . distance between
thrust collar and additional collar used for measurement is needed . this may be around 20 cm . pl
confirm whether measurement collar is on brg no.1 side or brg no.3 side of thrust brg . this is important
as the thermal expansion of the 20cm length of shaft between these two collars gets added(+/-) to axial
shift reading .

7. What is your turbine rolling procedure – do you admit steam to HP&IP simultaneously or steam to IP is
admitted at a later stage .

8. During initial rolling , it is assumed that HP exhaust will go to Reheater and hot reheat goes to IP
turbine and not to IP/LP bypass . Pl confirm .

9. Axial shift calibration : one standard convention is axial shift reading is ZERO when rotor thrust collar is
touching thrust pads on IP/LP side . So , when it touches brg no.1 side thrust pads , reading will be –
ve . Pl confirm your arrangement .

10. What is the axial shift reading

a. Before putting on turning gear

b. Some time After put on turning gear
c. After vaccum pulling is complete
d. Just before rolling
e. At 3000 rpm before synchronization
f. At 30% load
g. On reaching full load
h. After prolonged operation (-0.73mm??) . What is meant by prolonged operation ? is it few hours or
days ? .

11. Thrust brg may have measurement for each thrust pad on both sides (brg no.1 side and brg no.3 side) .
pl confirm max & min temperature amongst all pads on each side(there may be 10-12 pads on each
side(front & rear)) . It was mentioned by you that “t hrust bearing front temperature also risen and now
maintaining at 85 °C” . I understand that this is the average temp on brg no.1 side .

12. What is the max temperature reached on front side and rear side of thrust brg during rolling and
during reaching full load . Assuming that balancing drum arrangement is not provided in your turbine ,
It is expected that axial shift may be towards one side during rolling and low loads and may change to
other side(brg no.1?) at higher loads . If it is the case , thrust brg temp on corresponding side would go
up during rolling and low loads which will reduce at higher loads . Do you have DCS trending facility to
monitor / review such changes . What is the storage time of trends 2 days / 7 days / or more ? . This
can be monitored in case of start-ups in future if data is not available now .

13. Condenser vacuum shall not have any direct impact on steady state values of axial shift except thru
changes in load/steam flow parameters .

I will be able to give a correct picture after receiving data mentioned above . Otherwise , it will not be accurate
. You can send me the data whichever is readily available first and balance data at a later stage .
