Chapter 1
Introduction

Background of the Study

Energy is in fact one of the basic needs in people everyday lives. Energy is in many

kinds of forms such as solar, wind, fuels, electricity etc. that are all renewable and non-

renewable in nature. Electrical Energy or simply electricity becomes the most important

kind of energy. According to Lekshmi (2010), electricity is used for house lighting,

industrial electrical machineries and other appliances that all provide comfort to people.

Community benefits the electricity supply through many ways that makes

electricity a great demand nowadays. But also, electricity generation contributes harmful

effects to our environment. Community shall benefit a clean electricity, substantial

economic stimulus, job creation, efficient power production, enhanced reliability and

greater energy security (Panda Power Funds, 2019)

The demands of electricity supply in some local areas are so limited. The

Philippines is a rising and emerging country that focuses on shifting agriculture to industry.

In terms of energy consumptions, conventional fossil fuels (oil and gas) are still the primary

energy demanding source. According to 2011 Philippines primary energy consumptions

are 31% oil consumption, 20% is by coal, 22% is by geothermal, 12% is by biomass, 6%

is by hydro and 1% is by other renewable energy such as wind, solar, etc. (Energypedia,

2013).

Electricity is then distributed to consumers (Residential, Commercial, Industrial)

through substation, transformer, and transmission lines sometimes called “grids”. High
voltage transmission carry electricity over a very long distances to where the consumers

absolutely need it (EIA, 2018).

There are actually three major sector of consumers; Residential, Commercial and

Industrial that comprises 99% of nations electricity consumptions. In the three sector of

consumers, Residential accounts the most of the electricity used nationwide. Residential

includes single-family homes and multi-family housings. The demand of electricity is at

their trend during summer followed by evenings uses of appliances especially by bulbs,

fluorescent and etc. (EPA, 2017).

In the latest survey of Smart Grid Consumer Collaborative (SGCC) on 1,652

individuals in each U.S division census. Almost majority of the respondents (Consumers)

are interested in energy storage system that provide backup power and almost of half of

the respondents are on interested in solar power and programmable thermostats (Pyper,

2017).
Statement of the problem

This study aims to conduct Electrical Energy Consumption through Global System

for Mobile-Based Smart Energy Meter in Residential of Barangay Mangagoy, Bislig City.

In regards to take action of conserving energy. Specifically, this aims to answer the

following questions:

1. What are resident’s daily electricity consumptions?

2. What device that can measures and notifies residents wattage-hour

consumptions?

Objectives of the Study

The main goal is to determine the ways in consuming and conserving electrical

energy through the aid of GSM-Based Smart Energy Meter. Particularly this project aims

to:

1. Assess residents about their daily electricity consumptions?

2. Design a GSM-Based Smart Energy Meter that measures and notifies wattage-

hour consumptions.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant throught the following

Residents. They will be guided with regards to saving or conserving electrical

energy. This will help them inform on proper consumptions of electricity.

Students. The student will be oriented on the importance of proper consumptions

of electrical energy.
Researchers. This study will give them further knowledge on Electrical

Consumptions and Conservation.
