NAME: ROLL NO. MARKS: _____/10

Q. No. Question Marks

1 What are the weighed functions for three classical methods listed 3
below?
1. Collocation method Dirac delta function

𝝏𝑬
2. Least square method Error function or 𝝏𝒂
𝒊

𝝏𝑼
3. Galerkin’s method Trial function or 𝝏𝒂
𝒊

2 How are classical methods of solving differential equations 2

approximately different from finite element method?
Classical methods do not discretize the domain but finite element
does.
For same accurate solution higher degree trial solution has to be
considered in classical methods but in FEM reasonable accuracy
can be obtained even with linear or quadratic trial function.
Unknown parameters have meaning in FEM.

3 What is the utility of classical methods of solving differential 2

equations approximately in finite element methods?
Classical methods are used in finite element methods for solving
differential equation. The difference is domain is discretized but
for simultaneous minimization of error one of the classical
methods is used in FEM

4 Explain the concept of error cancellation in total residual and how it 2

is taken care?
While calculating total error, positive error will cancel negative
error and which will further give erroneous results.
To do away with this problem weighted functions are multiplied
before calculating total residual over the domain.

5 How will you decide degree of trial function in classical methods? 1

Minimum degree of trial function is decided from order of
governing equation but higher degree of trial function is required
for accuracy of solution as desired.
