It might say San Francisco ontheir uniforms but the Giants have adie-hard fan base on the Peninsulathat have followed the team fordecades in hopes it will one day winthe World Series.As the Giants set to battle theRangers in the
rst game of theWorld Seriestoday,fans arehoping this year’steam will finallybring the trophyhome,56 yearsafter it won its lastchampionshipwhile still playingin New York. The Giants swept the ClevelandIndians in 1954,the series in whichout
elder Willie Mays made “TheCatch.”The Giants moved to SanFrancisco prior to the 1958 seasonand made it to the World Seriesthree times before this season,in1962,1989 and 2002. The Giantslost all those series,however,put-ting pressure on this year’s team tosecure a World Series title for SanFrancisco and its die-hard fans hereon the Peninsula.Fans desperate to get into today’sgame are facing $400 ticket pricesfor standing-room-only seats. The excitement is real for thisyear’s team and local elected of

San Mateo County’s unfundedpension liability — namely retire-ment bene
ts draining current cof-fers to pay for past employees — is$9,415 per household,according toa recent national study looking atlocal governments at risk for bank-ruptcy.San Mateo was listed among thetop 10 counties nationwide troubledby rising pension costs as ranked inan Oct. 13 study out of Northwestern University’s KelloggSchool of Management. Other BayArea counties include Sonoma andContra Costa. The study found San MateoCounty has $2.5 billion in unfundedliability,which pencils out to $9,415per household. The liability is 413percent of revenue based on June2006 data,according to the studywhich predicts the county would runout of assets to pay bene

Millbrae police took issue withthe
ndings of a 12-page reportfrom the California Commission onPolice Officer Standards andTraining which outlined ways tosolve leadership problems by con-solidating the department with SanBruno’s.The report,conducted by an out-side state agency,found a number of issues in the department like a lackof consistent leadership and largeamounts of undocumented patroltime. c Gas andElectric Co. found 38 leaks in 6,700miles of gaspipeline surveyedafter the deadlygas pipe explo-sion in San Bruno.In a reportreleased Monday,PG&E said it did not
nd immediate safety issues with the 16miles of pipeline in the San Bruno area,but it did discover leaks elsewhere.The Sept. 9 blast killed eight peopleand destroyed dozens of homes.Four of the 38 leaks required immedi-ate action and were found near populat-ed areas.One of the four leaks,near Highway99 in Gridley,required replacement of apipe segment. Three were repaired bytightening bolts or greasing a valve.The 34 other leaks were found on dis-tribution lines,the smaller pipes thattake gas to customers. All were repaired.
